Chapter 11 - The Traitor Near Olivia Was Someone Nobody Had Thought to Question

The warning changed the room.

Someone near you.

Viper immediately ordered everyone separated.

Not violently.

Not accusingly.

But every phone was collected. Every bag inspected. Every vehicle searched.

Olivia hated it.

The farmhouse tracker had already taught them what paranoia could do.

This felt worse because Elena had named no one.

Daniel noticed first.

“If Hale has someone close, why tell us?”

Thomas looked at him.

“To make us suspect each other.”

“Exactly.”

Olivia folded her arms.

“So we don’t start turning on people just because Hale wants us to.”

Viper looked at Mara.

“She’s right.”

Mara nodded.

“Assume access, not betrayal.”

They mapped every point where information leaked.

The first safe house.

The farmhouse.

The Bellhaven investigation.

The Ridgeway excavation.

Each leak happened after official records were created.

Not after club conversations.

Not after family conversations.

That narrowed the possibilities.

Mara’s false payment account mattered too.

Whoever created it had access to law-enforcement identifiers.

Thomas checked task-force audit logs.

A technician named Aaron Pike appeared repeatedly.

He had handled Thomas’s authentication certificate.

He had processed Mara’s interagency credentials.

He had also performed maintenance on the encrypted evidence system used for Elena’s informant file.

Mara stared.

“We had him in the original list.”

Thomas nodded.

“But Price distracted us.”

Pike lived alone in Naperville.

Federal agents moved quietly.

He was gone.

His apartment contained almost nothing.

But one hidden safe held prepaid cards, cash, and a photograph of Preston Hale at a private fundraising dinner.

On the back, Hale had written:

For A.P. — loyalty protects the future.

Olivia felt relief and dread at once.

The traitor was not Daniel.

Not Riley.

Not Boone.

Not someone living with the children.

But Pike had been near them digitally for years.

Then agents found something worse.

A list.

Seven current addresses.

The state training facility was on it.

So was the temporary home holding Caleb.

So was Rachel Hartley’s hotel.

Pike had not merely leaked documents.

He was tracking survivors.

Mara relocated Caleb and Rachel immediately.

Daniel went with them.

Before leaving, he stopped beside Olivia.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She frowned.

“That’s not helpful.”

“It means you’re not pretending.”

She almost smiled.

He handed her an old photograph of himself and Caleb.

“Hold this.”

“Why?”

“So I have to come back for it.”

Olivia tucked it into her backpack.

“Deal.”

That evening, Pike’s car was found near O’Hare.

Airport footage showed him entering a terminal.

No record showed him boarding.

Viper suspected disguise.

Thomas suspected a hidden exit.

Mara suspected he wanted them wasting time.

Olivia asked a different question.

“What does Hale want now?”

“The ledger,” Thomas said.

“He already knows Elena has it.”

“Yes.”

“So why still care about me?”

Nobody answered.

Olivia returned to her memory of Ridgeway.

The wall.

The office.

The ledger.

Something bothered her.

The black ledger Hale hid behind the boiler was not the same ledger shown in Malcolm Price’s office footage.

She suddenly realized why.

The Ridgeway ledger had a red spine.

The one Elena carried was black.

“There are two.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Two what?” Viper asked.

“Ledgers.”

She described them.

Thomas searched Elena’s copied notes.

One line appeared in a scanned margin:

P.H. maintains operational book separately from client book.

Mara leaned closer.

“The black ledger lists clients.”

Olivia nodded.

“The red one might list what happened to the children.”

The thought changed everything.

Client names could convict buyers and officials.

But an operational ledger might contain placements, transport routes, aliases, maybe final destinations.

It could locate children still missing.

Caleb had been recovered.

Others had not.

Viper asked, “Where would Hale move it?”

Olivia thought of the Ridgeway basement.

She had seen him hide the red ledger.

Then the facility closed.

Someone removed the waterproof box from the salvage-yard car recently.

Malcolm Price had taken the black ledger.

Maybe the red ledger traveled elsewhere.

Caleb had mentioned Hale visiting Bellhaven.

Mara reopened Bellhaven evidence photographs.

In Hale’s private office there, investigators found no ledger.

But one photograph showed a floor safe hidden beneath a desk.

It had been empty.

The safe manufacturer’s service log showed a technician visit six months earlier.

Reason: relocation.

Destination address listed only as HWF-3.

Thomas searched Halcyon property codes.

HWF stood for Hale Wellness Foundation.

Property three was not a foster home.

It was a private rehabilitation center on Lake Michigan.

Closed to the public.

Mara requested records.

The facility officially treated adults with addiction disorders.

Yet Halcyon had paid it over two million dollars in “youth transition consulting.”

Viper’s face hardened.

“More kids?”

“Maybe records.”

Olivia looked at the map.

The center sat on a wooded bluff.

Only one road in.

Private dock.

Perfect place to hide a ledger.

Mara began seeking a warrant.

Then her phone rang.

Rachel Hartley.

Mara answered.

Rachel’s voice was panicked.

“Daniel is gone.”

Olivia stood.

“What?”

Rachel said Daniel had received a text from Caleb’s old number.

One sentence:

I know where the red book is.

Come alone if you want the missing names.

Daniel left without waking anyone.

Olivia’s hand went to the photograph in her backpack.

He had promised to come back for it.

Viper looked at her.

“Hale baited him.”

Olivia shook her head.

“No.”

She knew Daniel.

“He baited himself.”

“What does that mean?”

“He thinks if he goes alone, the rest of us stay safe.”

Viper swore.

Olivia grabbed her coat.

“You’re not going anywhere,” he said.

She met his eyes.

“He learned that idea from me.”

Then another message arrived.

This one on Olivia’s phone.

A photograph of Daniel tied to a chair.

Behind him stood Preston Hale.
