Chapter 11 - The Leak Inside the House and the Brother Nobody Understood

The bullet passed through muscle without striking bone.

Alessandro hated hospitals.

He hated the white walls, the questions, the loss of control, and the way nurses told him to sit as if the word carried authority.

Nora sat beside him anyway.

Lucia was safe.

Emilio was safe.

Mia was with Rosa and Nero at the mansion.

Serrano had escaped.

Victor had escaped.

The timer had been canceled at 12:58.

Two minutes.

Dom entered the room before dawn.

"We have a problem."

Alessandro looked up.

"The duplicate drive from the pier is gone."

Victor had taken it.

Worse, the police raid had resulted in only low-level arrests.

Someone had warned both leaders early enough to create exits.

"We have a leak," Dom said.

Nora immediately thought of Greta.

Alessandro did too.

But Greta had been under guard.

Cesare had been with them.

Emilio and Lucia had no access to security operations.

That left Alessandro's own people.

Dom hated the conclusion.

"I'll find him."

"No," Alessandro said. "We'll let him find us."

They returned to the mansion that afternoon.

Alessandro's shoulder was bandaged beneath a fresh shirt.

Mia ran toward him and stopped at the sight of the sling.

"You're broken."

"Temporarily."

She considered this.

Then kissed his hand.

Nora watched something shift in his face.

That evening, Alessandro gathered his senior men.

He told each one a different false plan.

To one, he said Serrano's ledger was moving to a bank vault.

To another, a courthouse evidence room.

To another, a private airfield.

Dom tracked all outgoing communications.

At 9:14 p.m., three black vehicles arrived at a private airfield where nothing had been stored.

The leak was Paolo Neri, a security captain who had worked for the Contis twelve years.

Dom brought him back alive.

Paolo refused to speak.

Then Lucia entered the room.

He looked at her and flinched.

She recognized him.

"You're the man from the apartment."

Nora stared.

Paolo had helped kidnap Lucia.

His loyalty had been sold years earlier.

Under pressure, he finally admitted Serrano paid him through Victor Rizzo's legal accounts.

That confirmed what Alessandro suspected.

Victor and Serrano were enemies now, but their networks still overlapped in people who cared more about money than allegiance.

Paolo gave them one useful fact.

Victor had taken the duplicate drive because he believed it contained the only copy of his father's private correspondence.

It did not.

But the original records did include letters Anton Rizzo wrote to someone identified only as G.C.

Dom searched.

No immediate match.

Then Nora remembered something.

Greta's full name.

Greta Celeste Halsey.

G.C. did not fit.

Lucia shook her head.

"Gabriel Conti."

The room went silent.

Alessandro's older brother.

Dead for sixteen years.

Gabriel had died in a boating accident when Alessandro was twenty-two.

According to the letters, Gabriel had discovered Anton's theft before Vittorio did.

He tried to extort Rizzo.

Not expose him.

Cesare read the letter twice.

"Gabriel was working with him."

Alessandro stared at his brother's signature.

Family history changed in his hands.

The golden son had not been innocent.

He had been another participant.

And the boating accident—

Dom found the final letter.

Anton wrote: GABRIEL HAS BECOME UNMANAGEABLE. MARCO WILL HANDLE THE WATER.

Nora watched Alessandro absorb the truth.

Serrano had killed his brother.

Rizzo had ordered it.

Vittorio had spent years suspecting pieces but never knowing the whole.

Alessandro closed the file.

"We end this."

Dom nodded.

"How?"

Alessandro looked toward the hallway where Mia was laughing with Nero.

"Not the way they would."

The consequences of that day continued to settle differently on everyone in the house. Nora measured danger by whether Mia could sleep without waking. Alessandro measured it by exits, loyalties, and unanswered calls. Dom measured it by inconsistencies. Lucia and Emilio, when they were present, measured it by the years they had lost to fear.

No one trusted silence anymore.

That change mattered. Before, silence had protected the powerful because everyone assumed secrets were safer left untouched. Now every pause invited another question, and every question weakened the old structure a little more.

For Alessandro, this was the most difficult lesson. Control had always meant knowing more than everyone else. He was beginning to understand that survival might require the opposite: allowing people to know enough that no single betrayal could bury the truth again.

Nora understood something similar for different reasons. She had spent years surviving by lowering her eyes, finishing the shift, paying the bill, getting Mia home, and postponing every impossible question until another day. But impossible questions did not disappear. They waited.

Now there was nowhere left for them to wait.

And so, when the next decision came, neither of them chose silence.
