Chapter 3 - The Bullet in the Glass and the Name From the Past

Darkness swallowed the security room.

Dom moved first.

His hand found Alessandro's shoulder and pushed him sideways just as something struck the glass partition where Alessandro had been standing.

A sharp crack split the room.

Nora screamed.

Emergency lights flickered on in red.

A bullet sat buried in the reinforced glass.

"Down," Dom ordered.

Alessandro was already moving.

He pulled Nora behind the server bank and drew the pistol from beneath his jacket. Above them, the alarm system began to howl.

Greta stood frozen.

Dom grabbed her by the arm and forced her down.

"Who is M?"

"I don't know!"

"Lie again," Dom said, "and I'll assume you invited whoever fired that shot."

Alessandro spoke into his radio.

"Lock interior zones. Find Mia."

Static answered.

His blood turned cold.

"Mia."

Nora's face changed.

The fear of losing a job vanished. The fear of dying vanished.

Only a mother remained.

She broke from cover.

Alessandro caught her before she reached the door.

"My daughter!"

"I know."

"Let me go!"

"If someone cut power, they planned this. You run blind, you give them two targets."

Her eyes burned with fury and terror. "Then move."

They moved.

Dom stayed behind with Greta and two security men. Alessandro took Nora through the service corridor rather than the main staircase. Red emergency lights washed the walls in color that made every shadow look alive.

They reached the breakfast room in under a minute.

The door stood open.

The room was empty.

Nora made a sound Alessandro never forgot.

Then Nero barked.

Once.

From the pantry.

Alessandro opened it.

Rosa crouched behind shelves of flour and canned tomatoes. Mia was in her lap, both arms wrapped around Nero's neck.

"You told me to keep her safe," Rosa gasped. "When the lights went out, the dog pushed us in here."

Mia saw her mother and burst into tears.

Nora dropped to the floor and gathered her up.

Alessandro looked at Nero.

The dog stared back.

"Good boy."

Nero's tail moved once.

The gunman was found twelve minutes later near the eastern wall, already gone. No identification. No phone. No fingerprints in any database Dom trusted.

But he had one thing.

A brass token stamped with a black serpent.

Dom brought it to Alessandro in the library.

Alessandro's expression hardened.

Nora sat across from him with Mia asleep against her chest.

"What is it?" she asked.

He did not answer immediately.

The symbol belonged to Marco Serrano, a man who had spent twenty years building a network through ports, unions, trucking firms, and politicians who preferred donations to questions.

Serrano had once been an ally of Alessandro's father.

Then an enemy.

"Trouble," Alessandro said.

Nora gave a tired laugh. "I noticed."

Dom entered with Greta.

She no longer looked like the unshakable ruler of the household. She looked exhausted.

Alessandro placed the brass token on the desk.

Greta stared at it.

"You know it."

She said nothing.

"Greta."

Her shoulders fell.

"Marco Serrano."

Nora tightened her hold on Mia.

Alessandro's voice remained calm.

"Why would Serrano care about Emilio Varela's daughter?"

Greta's eyes filled with something complicated.

Not loyalty.

Shame.

"Because Emilio found the ledger."

Dom stopped breathing for half a second.

"What ledger?" Nora asked.

Greta looked at her.

"The one that proved your father wasn't stealing from the Contis."

Nora's lips parted.

Greta continued.

"He was tracing money leaving Conti companies through shell businesses. Everyone assumed it was internal theft."

Alessandro knew what came next before she said it.

"It was Serrano."

Greta nodded.

"Your father discovered Marco Serrano had been siphoning money through three shipping firms with help from someone inside this family."

The library seemed suddenly too small.

"Who?" Alessandro asked.

Greta lowered her eyes.

"I never knew."

"Then why frame Nora?"

"Because Serrano called me six weeks ago. He knew she was here. He said if I didn't get her out quietly, he would make sure my son in Connecticut never saw another sunrise."

Nora stared.

"You destroyed my life because you were afraid for your son?"

Greta looked at her with tears she seemed ashamed to possess.

"Yes."

It was not an excuse.

That made it worse.

Alessandro opened his father's old desk drawer and removed a key ring.

"There is a sealed archive beneath the west wing."

Dom looked at him.

"You think the ledger is there?"

"No."

Alessandro's gaze shifted to Nora.

"But my father kept personnel files on every senior employee."

Including Emilio Varela.

Ten minutes later, they opened a steel cabinet untouched since Don Vittorio Conti's death.

Inside Emilio Varela's file was a single envelope.

It contained no ledger.

Only a photograph.

Emilio stood beside Vittorio Conti on a dock at night.

Between them was a young woman with dark hair.

Nora took the photograph.

Her hands began to shake.

"That's my mother."

May you like

On the back, in Vittorio's handwriting, were four words.

TRUST HER WITH THE KEY.
