Chapter 10 - The Auction Aboard the Ship Named for a Dead Woman

The Belladonna, now registered as the Cecilia, was docked at a private marina north of Boston behind a security gate and a row of gleaming yachts. Adrian had hidden the past in plain sight, repainted and renamed for people too wealthy to ask questions.
The auction began at nine.
By eight-thirty, Damon was wearing a tuxedo again.
Elena stared at him in disbelief.
"Your solution is to attend another gala?"
"Private collectors know me. If I appear, Adrian may believe I'm negotiating."
"And if he believes you know he's a murderer?"
"Then he'll be less relaxed."
"That's your plan? Make the murderer tense?"
Victor adjusted his cufflinks. "To be fair, Damon has built an entire career on making rooms uncomfortable."
Boone hated the operation. Without Venn's office, she had limited authority, and any official raid risked alerting the compromised chain of command. Mara arranged for local prosecutors to hold sealed warrants based on Claire's testimony. The goal was evidence, identification of buyers, and Liam's rescue.
Elena insisted on joining.
"No," Damon said.
"My father is coming."
Anthony nodded from his wheelchair. "I know the ship's lower compartments."
"Which is exactly why Adrian will recognize you."
Anthony smiled without humor. "He'll recognize me eventually. I'd prefer to choose when."
The plan divided them into roles. Damon and Victor would enter as potential buyers. Silas would monitor exterior security with Boone. Elena, wearing catering black, would join a contracted service crew using credentials Mara's investigator obtained. Anthony would remain in a surveillance van until the lower deck was accessible.
Damon hated every part of it.
Elena caught him watching her before they left.
"I'm not your employee tonight."
"You barely acted like one when you were."
"Good. Then we're improving."
The Cecilia's main salon glittered with crystal and stolen history. Objects rested in illuminated cases: carved icons, manuscripts, ceremonial jewelry, small sculptures. Labels used vague phrases like private European collection and pre-1970 acquisition.
Damon recognized three pieces from Cecilia's song archive.
Adrian Vale greeted him personally.
He was sixty-three, silver at the temples, with a lawyer's calm and a priest's patience.
"Damon. I wondered whether curiosity would overcome caution."
"I wondered whether vanity would overcome survival. Naming the boat Cecilia was theatrical."
Adrian's smile barely changed. "You always did inherit her sense of drama."
Victor joined them.
"And you inherited nothing worth keeping."
Adrian laughed. "Victor. Still pretending regret is a moral achievement?"
The auction began.
Damon bid on the first artifact, not to win but to keep Adrian focused on him.
Below deck, Elena moved trays while listening through a tiny earpiece. Silas guided her toward a service stair leading to cargo storage.
She found the door locked.
A soft voice came from behind it.
"Hello?"
Liam.
Elena whispered into the microphone. "Found him."
Anthony entered through the stern access with Boone's trusted agent. He bypassed an old mechanical lock using knowledge from two decades earlier.
Inside, Liam Claire's brother was bound but unharmed. Beside him stood rows of crates marked with the old R-17 code.
Anthony opened one.
Instead of antiquities, it contained files.
Hundreds of files.
Photographs, financial records, customs documents, blackmail material.
Adrian had not merely preserved the smuggling network.
He had preserved leverage on everyone who had ever used it.
Upstairs, Damon watched Adrian receive a message.
The lawyer's face changed by half a degree.
Enough.
"Something wrong?" Damon asked.
"Not at all."
Adrian set down his glass.
"You've always been poor at lying."
"I learned from my father."
"Arthur was excellent at lying. He simply enjoyed being believed more than he enjoyed being accurate."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Your mother was the dangerous one. She believed records could defeat men."
"She was right."
"Was she? She's dead. Arthur is dead. Sofia is dead. And you're standing on my ship while your empire is being dismantled by federal agents."
Damon looked around the salon.
Several buyers had quietly begun moving toward exits.
Victor saw it too.
Adrian smiled.
"You thought you were distracting me. I was waiting for your people to find the files."
Damon's pulse slowed.
"Why?"
"Because now I know exactly who you trust."
A loud metallic clang echoed below deck.
Then the lights went out.
Emergency red lamps flickered on.
Guests screamed.
Through Damon's earpiece, Silas shouted, "Move! Adrian has a second team coming from the marina."
Damon grabbed Victor.
"Where's Elena?"
Static.
Then Anthony's voice came through, strained and urgent.
"Adrian has her."
Damon turned.
The lawyer was gone.
On the polished bar lay Elena's bracelet.
Beside it was a note.
One daughter for one archive.

Bring Cecilia's originals to Pier Nineteen before dawn.
Damon picked up the bracelet but did not put it in his pocket. He closed his fist around it until the edges pressed into his palm. Elena had spent months entering rooms nobody noticed, following traces left by two dead women. Now Adrian had reduced her to leverage. Damon refused to let that be the final role forced on her.
