Chapter 9 - The Copies That Forced Enemies to Share the Same Table

Elena's plan was simple enough to make every powerful man in the room uncomfortable.
Make copies.
Not one set. Twelve.
Boone photographed Cecilia's list and song archive. Mara Chen created encrypted legal deposits with timed release instructions. Silas sent document packets to attorneys in three states. Victor contacted two museum restitution specialists who had once worked with Cecilia. Anthony recorded a sworn statement naming Adrian, Arthur, and everyone he remembered from the old network.
Damon objected only once.
"If we spread this, innocent names might be damaged before context is clear."
Elena looked at him across the dining room table. "Then we spread context too. Your family survived by controlling who knew what. I'm not building another version of that."
Damon had no answer.
By noon, Victor had moved into Kessler House under Boone's unofficial protection, a development neither man enjoyed.
"You still have terrible coffee," Victor complained.
"You still arrive uninvited."
"We have traditions."
Anthony sat at the far end of the table, reviewing the copied records with Mara. He had identified six aliases used by Adrian's couriers. Two linked to shell corporations that still existed.
One shell owned a private storage facility in Chelsea.
Silas checked the address.
"Guess who paid rent there last month."
"Adrian," Damon said.
"No. Kessler Maritime."
Damon froze.
"Impossible."
Silas turned the laptop around. The transfer came from an internal corporate account requiring executive authorization.
Damon saw the approval code.
D.K.-01.
His own.
"That's forged."
Mara examined it. "Or someone has access to your credentials."
Only four people did: Damon, Silas, the chief financial officer, and Damon's executive assistant.
Silas looked offended before Damon even spoke.
"Don't."
"I'm not accusing you."
"You're thinking through access. You should."
Damon called his CFO, Nina Patel, who answered from a federal interview room and immediately offered to send audit logs. His assistant, Claire Donnelly, did not answer.
Damon tried again.
Nothing.
Silas checked the security system.
"Claire left the estate at ten-thirteen last night. Before Victor arrived."
Damon remembered handing Claire his phone during a board dinner two weeks earlier so she could confirm a shipping authorization.
"She had access to my authentication app."
Victor leaned back. "How long has she worked for you?"
"Nine years."
"Long enough to become invisible."
The word irritated Damon because Victor was right.
Claire had managed appointments, travel, private correspondence, staff records, and the thousand small details powerful people stopped seeing precisely because someone reliable handled them.
Elena said quietly, "People like me learn things when nobody bothers hiding them."
Damon looked at her.
The same principle worked upward. Trusted staff heard everything.
Boone used an independent contact to trace Claire's phone. It had last pinged near the Chelsea storage facility.
They did not go there recklessly.
Boone arranged a small team of agents she trusted personally. Mara documented the basis for the search. Damon waited two blocks away, furious at being told to remain in the vehicle.
Elena sat beside him.
"Now you know how it feels when someone orders you to stay put."
"I dislike the lesson."
"Most useful ones are annoying."
He looked at her, surprised by the hint of humor.
"You aren't afraid?"
"I'm terrified. I just don't want Adrian deciding what I do with it."
Damon understood that better than he expected.
Twenty minutes later, Boone called.
The storage unit was empty except for burned papers, a dismantled server rack, and one chair.
Claire Donnelly was tied to it.
Alive.
Damon and Elena arrived after paramedics cleared the site.
Claire had bruises on her wrists and a cut above one eye. She began crying when she saw Damon.
"I'm sorry."
He crouched beside her. "Did you give Adrian my access?"
"Yes."
Silas stiffened.
Claire shook her head frantically. "Not willingly. He had my brother. Liam owes money. Adrian found out. He said he'd make the debt disappear if I copied your credentials. I thought it was for financial records. Then I realized he was moving things under your name."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Her shame was immediate. "Because after I did it once, he had proof I betrayed you. Then every choice got worse."
Elena looked away.
Damon did not shout.
He had spent his life around men who believed fear proved authority. Cecilia's recordings had made the cost of that belief unbearable.
"Where is Liam?"
Claire whispered, "Adrian said he'd release him after tonight."
"What's tonight?"
She looked at Anthony.
"A sale. Private auction. He has the last pieces from the old network. He plans to move them offshore before the federal case closes in."
Boone asked, "Where?"
Claire swallowed.
"On the Belladonna."
Damon remembered the photograph of Cecilia and Sofia on the pier.
The old boat had not vanished after all.
Victor's face changed.
"The Belladonna sank in 2007."
Claire shook her head.
"No. Adrian changed the registration. It's been docked under another name for years."
She gave them the new name.
Damon felt the room turn cold.
May you like
Cecilia.
Adrian had named the vessel after the woman he killed.
