Chapter 14 - The Photograph Reveals What Wexler Placed Beneath the Seat

Wexler broke when he saw the photograph.

Not dramatically. He did not confess everything or beg for mercy. He simply stopped denying that he had been at Pier 46.

Dominic preferred that. Fear produced lies; exhaustion sometimes produced facts.

Wexler explained that Matteo had summoned him to the warehouse that morning after discovering the Asterion payments. Wexler arrived early and saw Gio inspecting the vehicle. After Gio walked away, Salvatore approached from the service entrance and ordered Wexler to place a small medical transport case beneath the driver's seat.

Wexler claimed he believed it contained a recorder.

Mara signed, YOU EXPECT US TO BELIEVE THAT?

“No,” Wexler said. “But it's true.”

The case was fitted with a temperature sensor and looked like equipment Wexler regularly carried. He placed it where Salvatore told him and entered the warehouse. Minutes later, Matteo arrived. Their argument was captured on Matteo's recorder.

Wexler left before the explosion.

He later learned the case contained the detonator relay, not the explosive charge itself. The bomb had already been embedded beneath the vehicle chassis.

Dominic's anger sharpened.

Wexler may not have planted the explosives, but he had completed the circuit.

Mara asked why Salvatore trusted him.

Wexler gave a bleak smile.

“He didn't. He owned me.”

Years earlier, Wexler falsified data in an experimental hearing study after a patient died. Salvatore obtained the original records and used them to recruit him. Asterion money funded his clinic. The clinic became both laboratory and leverage.

Dominic signed, AND AFTER MATTEO DIED?

Wexler looked at him.

“I kept you deaf because I was afraid of the men who asked me to.”

It was the closest thing to remorse he offered.

Dominic felt no sympathy.

But he now had a chain of events supported by multiple independent pieces: Matteo's recordings, the access tones, Wexler's research files, Elena's ledgers, the Pier 46 photograph, and the recovered medical transport inventory.

What they still lacked was evidence tying Salvatore directly to the bombing command rather than its surrounding conspiracy.

Mara found the path.

The medical transport case Wexler carried had a lot number. Meridian Acoustic Systems retained shipment metadata for regulated research equipment. If they could locate the serial history, they might identify who took possession of the case.

The records showed it was delivered to Asterion House five days before the bombing.

The shipping manifest also listed a tamper-evident seal number. Investigators compared it with a scorched fragment cataloged after the blast and stored for years in an evidence bag no one had considered important. The partial digits matched. For the first time, the medical case in Wexler's story could be connected physically to debris from Matteo's car.

Signed for by Raymond Kessler, Salvatore's private investigator.

Kessler was dead.

But the delivery company archived a driver's body-camera feed after a dispute over damaged packaging.

Gio obtained it through a subpoena arranged by a federal attorney Elena trusted.

The footage showed Kessler receiving the case.

Behind him stood Salvatore.

He never touched it.

He did not need to.

His presence placed him at the transfer point.

Dominic began planning the final trap.

The wedding was six weeks away, but invitations had already gone to every major ally, rival, business partner, and political fixer connected to both families. Canceling it would scatter the network.

Holding a smaller “private rehearsal dinner” could concentrate it.

Sabrina understood immediately.

“You want them to think we're still marrying.”

Dominic nodded.

Her face tightened.

For a moment, the strategy collided with something personal. They had once discussed flowers, music, and vows for that same room.

“I did love you,” she said.

Dominic read her lips.

He signed, I KNOW.

It was true. Love and betrayal could exist together. That did not make either harmless.

Sabrina asked whether he still loved her.

Dominic did not answer quickly.

Finally he signed, NOT IN A WAY THAT CAN MAKE THIS MARRIAGE SAFE.

She looked down, then nodded.

The rehearsal dinner would proceed as a performance.

Dominic would appear politically weakened, uncertain, and desperate to preserve the Ferraro-Marquetti alliance. Sabrina would pretend obedience to Carlo. Wexler's survival would remain secret. Elena would remain hidden.

Most importantly, Dominic would wear a new discreet auditory processor Dr. Shah had configured for close-range sound detection. He still could not reliably understand speech, but with lip-reading and limited audio cues combined, he could follow more than anyone expected.

Salvatore believed Dominic's silence remained complete.

Dominic intended to let him keep believing it.

That night, as the estate prepared for the false celebration, Mara found a sealed envelope beneath her bedroom door.

Inside was a photograph of Lucia, her dead sister.

On the back, someone had written:

You came for the wrong family.

Mara turned the photograph over again.

Beneath the sentence was an address.

And a time.
