Chapter 7 - Sabrina Chooses Between Her Father and Her Mother

Sabrina stared at the photograph without blinking.

Dominic had seen people receive death threats before. Some became frantic. Others became loud. Sabrina went quiet in a way he had never seen, as if fear had compressed her into something harder.

She reached for Mara's phone.

Gio stopped her.

“Could be tracking activity.”

He powered the device down and removed the battery.

Sabrina turned to Dominic. “We have to give them the drive.”

Dominic signed, NO.

Her face changed instantly.

“That is my mother.”

I KNOW.

“You don't know what my father does to people who embarrass him.”

Dominic held her gaze.

He knew more than she thought.

Mara intervened. IF THEY ONLY WANTED THE DRIVE, THEY WOULD HAVE TAKEN IT BEFORE NOW. THEY WANT TO KNOW WHO ELSE HAS COPIES.

There were already three encrypted copies. Gio had created them before leaving the bank and sent one to a dead-drop server controlled by an attorney outside New York. The kidnappers did not know that.

Sabrina paced near the fireplace.

“She is at one of his medical properties.”

Dominic looked up.

Sabrina explained that Carlo used private rehabilitation facilities for meetings he wanted hidden. Elena had been moved among several of them. Sabrina recognized the pale green tile behind the chair in the photograph.

Asterion House, an old psychiatric residence in Westchester.

Mara went still.

She had worked there once.

Not as staff, she clarified. Wexler had used one wing for off-book clinical trials. The building contained a basement treatment area not shown on public plans.

Gio began assembling a rescue team.

Dominic stopped him.

Too obvious.

If Carlo expected an assault, Elena would be dead before Ferraro guards reached the front door.

Sabrina said, “He will let me in.”

Dominic's expression hardened.

She understood his objection before he signed it.

“He thinks I am still afraid of him.”

Mara signed, AREN'T YOU?

Sabrina looked at her. “Yes.”

The honesty changed the room.

Their plan formed around that fear.

Sabrina would call Carlo from a line Gio believed safe and claim she had taken the drive from Dominic. She would offer to exchange it for Elena. The real drive would remain at the estate. She would carry a duplicate containing files corrupted just enough to pass a quick inspection.

Dominic would not allow her to go alone.

Sabrina almost laughed. “My father will know if you are within a mile.”

Mara pointed to herself.

I CAN GO.

Dominic immediately shook his head.

Mara signed, HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT I LOOK LIKE.

“He probably does now,” Gio said.

Mara considered that. Then she removed her coat, wiped makeup from beneath one eye, and pulled her hair back. The exhausted homeless woman disappeared surprisingly fast. Beneath the grime was someone disciplined and observant, someone who had spent years in controlled clinical spaces.

She could pose as a medical courier.

Dominic hated the plan because it relied on two women walking into Carlo's territory while he waited outside.

That was exactly why it might work.

The exchange was arranged for 3:00 a.m.

Asterion House stood behind iron gates on twelve wooded acres. Sabrina drove through the main entrance carrying the false drive. Mara entered twenty minutes earlier in a pharmacy delivery van using credentials Gio's team copied from a real supplier.

Dominic remained in a vehicle beyond the property with a tactical feed displayed on three silent screens.

Mara wore a pinhole camera.

Through it, Dominic saw old corridors, institutional tile, and locked doors. She moved toward the basement using a service stairwell she remembered from Wexler's trials.

Sabrina appeared on another camera in a sitting room with Carlo Marquetti.

Dominic had known Carlo since childhood. He was broad, silver-haired, and immaculate even at three in the morning. His smile toward his daughter looked almost affectionate.

Dominic could not hear their conversation, but Gio's software produced a rough live transcript from the microphone.

Carlo asked for the drive.

Sabrina asked for Elena.

Carlo smiled again.

Then the feed from Mara's camera showed a locked basement room.

She picked the electronic latch with a maintenance key and entered.

Elena sat inside, not tied to a chair as in the photograph but restrained to a hospital bed. An IV line ran into her arm.

Mara checked the bag.

Her face changed.

She signed directly toward the camera.

SAME DRUG FAMILY.

Dominic's jaw tightened.

Upstairs, Carlo inserted the false drive into a laptop.

A progress bar appeared.

Sabrina's hands remained folded in her lap.

The drive opened.

Carlo leaned closer.

Then he smiled.

Not because he believed her.

Because he had discovered the corruption.

The transcript on Dominic's screen updated.

Carlo said, “You chose him.”

Sabrina answered, “I chose her.”

Carlo reached beneath his jacket.

Dominic gave Gio the signal.

At the same moment, Mara disconnected Elena's IV.

Every light in Asterion House went red.

And the basement doors locked automatically.
