Chapter 14 - The File Victor Kept Because He Knew I Would Come

Sofia had been taken from the penthouse garage.

The security feed showed four minutes of static beginning at 2:41 a.m. When video returned, her car sat empty with the driver's door open. One guard was unconscious near the elevator, alive but drugged.

Victor called again at 3:05.

This time Khloe answered.

"Where is she?"

"Alive. Annoyed. Very on brand."

Sofia's voice came faintly from the background. "Do not give him anything."

Victor sighed. "See?"

"What do you want?"

"The A17 flash drive, Vale's notebook, and the Matteo recording. Originals."

"You know there are copies."

"Copies create arguments. Originals create stories juries understand."

"And Owen's file?"

Victor paused just long enough to hook her.

"Body-camera footage from the warehouse fire. Federal retrieval team wore cameras. Keene kept one segment off the official system. Owen was alive when they arrived."

Khloe stopped breathing.

Lorenzo, standing beside her, saw the change in her face.

"You're lying."

"Maybe. Come find out."

"Location."

"Old drawbridge control house on the Calumet River. You and Lorenzo. No Reeve. No police. Dawn."

The call ended.

Khloe looked at Reeve.

"Were agents at the fire?"

He nodded slowly. "A federal hazardous-material team arrived before I did. Keene told me they were responding to chemical cargo. Their body-camera files were corrupted."

"Could Owen have been alive?"

"The coroner estimated he survived several minutes after the initial blast. I never knew how many."

Khloe turned away.

Four years of grief rearranged itself around a new possibility: Owen conscious in smoke, waiting for people who arrived and did not save him.

Lorenzo touched her shoulder.

She shook him off—not in anger at him, but because if anyone touched her gently she might break.

"We go," she said.

Reeve objected. Thomas objected. Dominic objected from the moment he arrived. Denise, when told Sofia had been taken, surprised everyone by agreeing.

"Of course she goes," Denise said. "The question is whether she goes the way Victor expects."

Khloe looked at her mother.

Denise folded her arms. "Your brother used to cheat at hide-and-seek by watching reflections. Stop assuming I'm decorative."

They built a plan around Victor's expectation.

First they verified Sofia was still alive. Victor allowed a fifteen-second video call. Sofia sat beneath a rusted control panel, wrists tied in front, a fresh scrape at her temple. She did not waste the seconds pleading.

"North window faces river," she said quickly. "Three guards. One has a limp. Victor's laptop is ruggedized, probably local copy. Do not—"

The feed cut.

Khloe looked at Lorenzo. "She just conducted reconnaissance during her own kidnapping."

"I'm giving her a raise if any company still exists after this."

Reeve focused on the phrase local copy. If Victor had body-camera footage stored on the bridge laptop, Keene's archive probably contained more. Recovering the device mattered not only emotionally but evidentially.

Nand's team prepared a covert warrant for the structure and authority to act once the hostage was confirmed. That kept the rescue from becoming another private Capello operation prosecutors could later challenge. Khloe had learned to care about what happened after the gunfire as much as during it.

Denise watched preparations from the safe apartment and refused to let Khloe leave without eating. She placed toast in front of her with the same expression generals used for orders.

"Your brother skipped meals when he was scared," Denise said. "Then he got stupid."

"I don't get stupid."

"You joined the Army at eighteen because a recruiter had a poster with a helicopter."

"That is a malicious simplification."

"Eat."

Khloe ate.

Lorenzo stood near the window, giving them privacy. Denise went to him afterward. Khloe could not hear the first sentence, only Lorenzo's answer.

"I will do everything I can."

Denise shook her head. "No. Don't promise me you'll bring her back. You can't control that. Promise me you won't ask her to be less herself because you're afraid."

Lorenzo looked toward Khloe.

"I can promise that."

Khloe pretended she had not heard.

Khloe and Lorenzo would approach visibly by car with a case containing duplicate evidence made to look original. Thomas and Dominic would stage farther south. Reeve would coordinate with the inspector general team but hold them outside Victor's likely surveillance radius until Sofia was located.

Maya flew a drone high enough to avoid obvious detection.

The old drawbridge control house sat above the river on a rusted steel structure, accessible by a narrow stair and a maintenance catwalk. Thermal imaging showed five people inside.

Nand's hostage team mapped firing angles and rejected two approaches because Sofia would be exposed to crossfire. A river unit waited downstream with lights off. Reeve sat in the command vehicle listening to radio traffic and looked physically ill at being kept away.

"Victor asked for no Reeve because he knows you want to come," Khloe told him.

"I know."

"And because you want to come, you stay."

Reeve gave her a bleak smile. "You have become very irritatingly responsible."

"Occupational growth."

He handed her a small audio receiver tuned to Nand's encrypted channel. "Then be responsibly irritating and come back."

Lorenzo checked the duplicate evidence case. The flash drive inside contained a harmless copy of shipping manifests. Vale's notebook was a high-resolution reproduction. Matteo's cassette had been duplicated onto an old tape shell to preserve weight. Sofia, before being taken, had insisted on maintaining evidence originals elsewhere; that decision now protected them from Victor's demand.

"She saved us while getting kidnapped," Lorenzo said.

"She's going to be unbearable about it."

Thermal imaging showed five people inside.

"One seated," Maya reported. "Four moving."

Sofia.

At 5:52 the sky began turning blue-gray.

Khloe and Lorenzo climbed the stairs carrying the case.

Victor waited in the control room wearing a dark overcoat. Two armed men stood near Sofia, who was tied to a chair but otherwise unharmed. A third guard watched the river door.

On a table beside Victor sat a rugged laptop.

"You actually came," Victor said.

Sofia rolled her eyes. "He has said that twice already."

Victor ignored her.

Lorenzo set the case on the floor. "Let her go."

"After I verify."

"You don't get both."

Victor smiled. "Still pretending you negotiate."

Khloe looked at the laptop. "Show me Owen."

"Evidence first."

"Show me he exists on that file or I throw the case into the river."

Victor studied her, then turned the laptop.

The video was grainy and time-stamped four years earlier.

Smoke filled a warehouse loading bay. A body-camera wearer moved through wreckage behind two others in federal tactical gear. Someone shouted about secondary fire.

Then the camera turned.

Owen lay against a concrete pillar.

Alive.

His face was burned and bloodied, but his eyes were open.

Khloe made a sound she did not recognize.

On the video, an agent crouched beside him.

Aaron Pike.

Owen grabbed Pike's sleeve.

"Victor," he coughed. "Gabriel—"

Pike looked over his shoulder.

Another voice said, "Keene wants the drive."

Pike searched Owen's jacket.

Owen whispered, "My sister has the key."

Khloe's knees nearly gave way.

Pike found nothing.

Then a third man stepped into frame.

Victor.

Younger, rain on his coat, no mask.

He crouched in front of Owen.

"You made this expensive," Victor said.

Owen managed a bloody smile. "You were always bad at spreadsheets."

Khloe's throat closed. Even dying, he sounded like himself.

Victor's face on the video hardened.

He looked at Pike.

"Clear the room."

The body camera turned away.

A gunshot sounded thirty seconds later.

The clip ended.

Nand's receiver in Khloe's ear remained open. She knew federal agents were hearing everything. That mattered. Victor could no longer later claim the video had been misunderstood in a private confrontation.

Khloe forced herself to name what she felt: grief, rage, relief that Owen had fought until the end, and guilt that relief existed beside horror. Naming emotions was slower than shooting, but it kept one feeling from pretending to be the only one.

Silence filled the control house.

Khloe looked at the living Victor.

He did not apologize.

"He was dying anyway," he said.

Lorenzo moved before Khloe could.

He crossed half the room and hit Victor hard enough to send him into the table. Victor's guards raised their weapons.

Khloe aimed at the nearest.

"Nobody."

Sofia shouted, "Khloe, left!"

The river-door guard fired.

Khloe dropped and shot the control panel beside him. Glass and sparks drove him back. Lorenzo and Victor crashed into the wall, trading blows with years behind them.

The nearest guard grabbed Sofia's chair as a shield.

Sofia slammed both heels onto his foot and threw her weight sideways. The chair toppled, taking him with it.

Khloe fired into the ceiling above the second guard. "Drop it!"

He hesitated.

A red laser appeared on his chest through the window.

Thomas's voice came over the external loudspeaker from across the river. "I would listen to her."

The guard dropped his weapon.

Victor drove Lorenzo backward into an old control lever. Lorenzo recovered and struck him in the ribs.

"You killed Owen," Lorenzo said.

Victor laughed through blood. "You're angry about him? I did you a favor. He would've buried us all."

"He was trying to stop people like you."

"People like us. Stop pretending you're different because you wear cleaner suits."

Lorenzo froze for half a second.

Victor used it to reach for an ankle gun.

Khloe saw the movement.

She fired once.

The bullet struck Victor's forearm. The ankle gun clattered across the floor.

Victor stared at her.

Khloe walked toward him with her pistol steady.

Every part of her wanted the next shot.

Owen alive against the pillar.

Pike leaving.

Thirty seconds.

A gunshot.

Victor watched her face and understood.

"Do it," he said softly. "That's what your brother would want."

Khloe's finger tightened.

Then she heard Owen's voice from the recording in A17.

Don't assume the obvious person did it. Follow the money.

Owen had not left her a revenge instruction.

He had left her work.

Khloe lowered the muzzle one inch.

"My brother wanted the truth to survive you."

Sirens rose in the distance.

Victor's expression changed.

"You brought police."

"Worse," Sofia said from the floor. "Federal oversight."

Inspector general agents entered the bridge structure from both stairwells. Victor's remaining guards surrendered.

Lorenzo stepped away from his oldest friend.

Victor looked from him to Khloe.

"You think this ends with me? Gabriel built it. Keene protected it. Matteo fed it. You all live in the same house."

Khloe removed the laptop from the table.

"Then we'll keep cleaning rooms."

Victor was handcuffed.

Sofia refused medical transport until she personally watched Nand seal the rugged laptop in an evidence bag. Only then did she let a paramedic clean the scrape at her temple.

"You were tied to a chair," Khloe said. "Delegate."

"I delegated getting kidnapped. Results were poor."

Khloe hugged her without warning. Sofia went rigid, then hugged back with one arm.

"Never do that again," Khloe said.

"I had no intention of making it recurring."

Before agents led him out, he leaned toward Lorenzo.

"Ask Gabriel who gave your father the pills that killed him."

Lorenzo went completely still.

Victor smiled.

One more weapon, delivered without proof.

May you like

Then he was gone.

Khloe watched the vehicle carrying Victor disappear beyond the bridge and felt no victory, only the strange steadiness of having chosen testimony over execution. Sofia stood beside her, free and furious.
