Chapter 14 - Evelyn Walked Into Markov’s Hands to Learn Who Followed Them

The first vehicle stopped below the retreat center.

Evelyn counted doors opening.

Six people.

The second vehicle carried four more.

The third remained farther down the road, likely blocking escape.

Reznik opened a concealed cabinet containing an old rifle.

Victoria said, “Please tell me there’s another road.”

“There was,” Reznik replied. “A storm took it last winter.”

Evelyn studied the terrain through the dark window.

A fight would be loud, uncertain, and disastrous. Reznik had limited mobility. Victoria had courage but no combat training. Ten armed contractors could surround the cottage in minutes.

“We don’t fight them here,” Evelyn said.

Reznik lifted the rifle. “Then we die politely?”

“No. They came for someone specific.”

She removed the memory board containing Daniel’s copied files and gave it to Victoria.

Then she took Reznik’s encrypted drive and hid it inside the hollow rubber heel of Victoria’s boot.

Victoria realized what she was planning.

“No.”

“If they came for Reznik, they search the house. If they came for the files, they search all of us. If they came for me, I can move them away from both.”

“You are not surrendering to Markov.”

“I’m controlling what he thinks he captured.”

Victoria grabbed her arm.

“You don’t know what he’ll do.”

“I know exactly what he’ll do. That’s why this can work.”

Evelyn walked out the front door with her hands visible.

Before the door closed, she glanced once at Victoria’s boots. The heel containing Reznik’s drive looked ordinary. Victoria understood the glance and shifted her stance so the altered heel faced away from the approaching men. No words passed between them. None were needed.

Markov stood thirty yards away beneath the trees.

He looked almost pleased.

“Evelyn.”

“Sergei.”

“You finally became practical.”

“I’ll come with you. You leave the house untouched.”

He smiled. “You are negotiating from a weak position.”

“No. I’m offering you the only person Shaw cannot afford to have testify publicly about Prague.”

That made him pause.

Evelyn continued.

“Kill Reznik and the files release. Kill Victoria and the bank archive releases. Kill me and Vale’s copy releases. But take me alive and Shaw gets to ask what I’ve already shared.”

Some of it was bluff.

Enough was true.

Markov considered, then nodded.

He ordered his team to hold position.

They put a hood over Evelyn’s head and drove for nearly two hours.

She counted turns, road surfaces, stops, and changes in elevation. The vehicle eventually entered a structure where sound became hollow and air smelled of concrete dust.

When the hood came off, Evelyn was seated in an unfinished office building.

Markov stood across from her.

No Croft.

No Shaw.

Just him.

“You always were difficult to kill,” he said.

“You had three years.”

“I was told you died after Prague.”

That surprised her.

“Shaw lied to you too.”

Markov’s expression barely changed, but the silence was enough.

Evelyn pressed.

“She compartmentalizes everyone. Croft thinks he funds Orpheus. Mercer thinks he protects an intelligence capability. You think you command operations. None of you know the whole structure.”

“And you do?”

“No. But I know she is preparing to cut you loose.”

Markov leaned closer.

“Why would I believe that?”

“Because the Baltimore team got arrested. Kessler is dead. Vale survived. Reznik is alive. And my face is now in federal warrants. Too much attention. Shaw will need one operational villain.”

For the first time, anger flickered in his eyes.

Evelyn had found the pressure point.

Orpheus was not the only system that modeled people.

“You want me to betray her,” he said.

“I want you to understand your position.”

Markov walked to the window.

“Prague was her design,” he said. “Croft supplied transport and money. Mercer supplied access. I supplied men.”

Evelyn kept her face still.

“Why?”

“Reznik had documents connecting a Russian deputy minister to payments through Croft’s companies. Shaw believed the scandal would expose American collection programs built around those channels. She decided to keep the channels and eliminate the witnesses.”

“Including me.”

“You were not supposed to survive.”

“Who killed Daniel?”

Markov turned back.

“A subcontractor. Car systems. Remote steering interference.”

Evelyn felt fury rise and buried it.

“Authorized by?”

“R-17.”

“Say her name.”

He smiled.

“Maren Shaw.”

The recorder sewn into Evelyn’s belt buckle captured every word.

Then Markov’s expression changed.

He stepped forward and ripped the belt from her waist.

The recorder hit the floor.

He had known.

Evelyn’s stomach dropped.

Markov crushed the device beneath his heel.

“You think I kept you alive to talk?”

He pulled a phone from his pocket and turned the screen toward her.

A live video showed Victoria and Reznik leaving the retreat center.

A red tracking marker followed their vehicle.

May you like

Markov smiled.

“I kept you alive because while you were distracting me, one of my men planted a beacon under their car.”
