Chapter 17 - The Rescue at the Data Center Exposed Croft’s Last Financial Weapon

Evelyn reached the hangar as the first tactical team forced Croft’s guards backward.

Croft shoved Victoria inside the jet and reached for the door controls.

Evelyn fired at the hydraulic panel beside the stairs.

Sparks burst from the housing.

The door stopped halfway.

A guard leaned into the opening.

Ortiz’s agents ordered him down.

He fired instead.

The exchange lasted less than five seconds.

When it ended, the guard was wounded, Croft had retreated into the cabin, and Victoria had thrown herself behind a leather seat.

Evelyn climbed aboard from the service stairs.

Croft held a compact pistol near Victoria’s shoulder.

“Stop.”

Evelyn did.

The cabin smelled of aviation fuel and expensive leather.

Croft’s composure had cracked.

“You have no idea what you are destroying,” he said.

“Your travel plans?”

“Systems that kept worse people contained.”

“That’s what Shaw told herself.”

“She understood power.”

“So did Daniel Sutton.”

Croft’s eyes moved toward Victoria.

That fraction of distraction was enough.

Victoria dropped suddenly and rammed the heel of her hand backward into his wrist.

The shot went into the ceiling.

Evelyn crossed the space, struck Croft once in the forearm, once in the throat, and forced him face-down against the aisle.

Ortiz boarded seconds later.

Croft was handcuffed before he stopped coughing.

Victoria sat on the floor laughing breathlessly.

“You told me to create an opening.”

“That qualifies.”

The victory lasted less than a minute.

Victoria stood on shaking legs and handed Croft’s weapon to an agent without touching the trigger. Evelyn noticed the discipline and realized how much had changed since the night at Leander, when Victoria had barely understood why a stranger dragged her through a kitchen. Fear was still there. It simply no longer made the decisions.

An agent at the hangar entrance called out.

The rescue team had reached the Port of Baltimore data center.

Hale’s son was alive.

But the building was being wiped remotely.

Server racks were shutting down in sequence while automated deletion scripts destroyed storage volumes.

Croft smiled from the floor.

“You’re too late.”

Victoria looked at him.

“No.”

She held up his phone.

During the struggle, she had taken it.

Croft’s expression changed.

The device was locked, but a banking notification was visible on the screen.

Three transfers had been scheduled for release within the hour.

Victoria recognized the routing format.

“These aren’t ordinary vendor payments.”

Ortiz crouched beside her.

“What are they?”

“Emergency liquidity movements. Croft is shifting money out of accounts linked to Orpheus.”

“If the servers are erased, can the transfers still prove anything?”

“Transfers leave records at receiving institutions.”

Croft stopped smiling.

Victoria saw it.

“So that’s the last weapon,” she said. “Not the files. The money.”

They transported Croft under armed guard while Victoria worked with a federal financial-crimes team to freeze the transfers.

One destination was a Caribbean trust.

One was a consultancy in Luxembourg.

The third was domestic.

Meridian Vector Systems.

The amount was ninety-two million dollars.

The memo field contained a coded reference: LYRE-CONTINUITY.

Ortiz obtained an emergency seizure order from a federal judge outside the compromised intelligence chain.

The bank froze the payment fourteen minutes before settlement.

Victoria insisted on preserving the original payment instruction, not just a screenshot. The bank’s fraud team exported the message header, authorization chain, routing metadata, and server timestamps under witness signatures. She had spent years telling executives that financial records were only as strong as their chain of custody. Now that habit gave Ortiz evidence Croft could not dismiss as a manipulated image.

That created a recoverable transaction record independent of Shaw’s systems.

At the Port facility, agents found Hale’s son tied in a maintenance room exactly as Victoria had described from the video. They also found seven server racks still warm after the wipe.

Most drives were ruined.

One storage array survived because its controller failed during deletion.

Technicians imaged it immediately.

The surviving fragments contained target profiles, operational calendars, and internal billing identifiers.

One file showed a direct approval chain for Project Lyre.

R-17 authorized political pressure.

N.M. approved government access.

R.C. funded operational execution.

Shaw.

Nathan Mercer.

Richard Croft.

For the first time, all three roles appeared in one document.

Victoria stared at the screen.

“We have them.”

Ortiz was more cautious.

“We have evidence. That is not the same as having everyone.”

Evelyn agreed.

Markov remained free.

Shaw remained free.

Mercer still sat inside Strategic Assessment with authority to erase records and misdirect agencies.

Then a technician recovered another fragment.

It was a contingency order created less than two hours earlier.

If Croft was detained, Orpheus personnel were to initiate BLACK GLASS.

Evelyn read the description.

Emergency destruction of financial, operational, and witness links.

The witness list included Thomas Vale, Anton Reznik, Senator Hale, Lena Ortiz, Victoria Sutton, and Evelyn herself.

At the bottom was an activation timestamp.

BLACK GLASS had already started.
