Chapter 3 - Why the Marriage Had to Survive Until Midnight

They descended the freight stairs in darkness.

Dante went first.

Serena behind him.

Patricia last.

At the twenty-fourth floor, Dante stopped.

“What happens at midnight?”

Patricia said nothing.

Dante turned.

“Patricia.”

Serena looked at her mother.

“What happens?”

Patricia gripped the railing.

“Your father never told you?”

“No.”

Her face collapsed.

“There is a trust.”

Dante laughed once.

“Of course there is.”

Patricia continued.

“Created when Serena was a child.”

“By whom?”

“Her grandfather.”

Serena frowned.

“What does that have to do with Dante?”

Patricia looked at her.

“The trust controls Romano voting shares.”

Silence.

“If you remain married to a Cavali through your third anniversary, the shares transfer permanently to the Romano-Cavali holding company.”

Dante stopped.

“Tonight is our anniversary.”

“Yes.”

“At midnight.”

“Yes.”

Serena stared at her mother.

“And if we divorce before midnight?”

“The transfer fails.”

Dante looked at the envelope.

The signature he had made hours earlier suddenly meant something else.

“Vincent needs the marriage intact.”

Patricia nodded.

“Until midnight.”

Serena whispered:

“So Dad knew Dante was planning to divorce me.”

Patricia looked away.

Dante’s expression hardened.

“How?”

No answer.

He understood.

“Arthur.”

Serena looked at him.

“Your lawyer?”

Dante said nothing.

Patricia whispered:

“Vincent has had someone inside your legal office for years.”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

They continued downward.

At the nineteenth floor, Serena asked:

“What happens after midnight?”

Patricia answered:

“Your father gains access to Cavali-controlled transportation contracts through the holding company.”

Dante stared.

“He turns our marriage into a key.”

“Yes.”

“And Carlo?”

Patricia’s eyes filled.

“Carlo gets the South Docks.”

Silence.

Dante looked at Serena.

“Your father promised him my territory.”

She shook her head.

“I didn’t know.”

“I believe you.”

Serena froze.

Three simple words.

I believe you.

Her eyes filled.

Dante continued.

“But your father knew something else.”

“What?”

“He knew if I survived tonight, I could cancel every agreement tomorrow.”

Patricia whispered:

“Not after midnight.”

Dante looked at her.

“Why?”

“The trust becomes irrevocable.”

He smiled without humor.

“So he needs me dead before I can challenge it.”

“Yes.”

Serena covered her mouth.

The plan became clear.

Keep the marriage alive until midnight.

Kill Dante.

Transfer the shares.

Take the docks.

Leave Serena a widow.

Dante looked at his watch.

11:17 p.m.

Forty-three minutes.

A door opened below.

Men entered the stairwell.

Dante heard them.

He pulled Serena behind him.

Patricia whispered:

“They found us.”

Dante looked up.

Then down.

Trapped.

Serena touched his arm.

“There’s another exit.”

He looked at her.

“How many secrets did your father build into my house?”

May you like

Her voice shook.

“Enough to make me afraid of every wall.”
