Chapter 4 - The Room Serena Was Never Supposed to Find

Serena led them to the seventeenth floor.

An unfinished guest suite.

No furniture.

No cameras.

She crossed to a marble panel near the bathroom.

Pressed two tiles.

A steel door opened.

Dante stared.

“What is this?”

Serena whispered:

“My father’s listening room.”

Silence.

Inside:

Old monitors.

Dead audio equipment.

Wires.

A locked cabinet.

Dante’s face changed.

“He was spying on me.”

“For years.”

“How long have you known?”

Serena looked down.

“Since the week before our wedding.”

That answer hurt.

Not because she knew.

Because she had carried it alone.

Dante entered.

Patricia followed.

Serena opened the cabinet.

Folders.

Photographs.

Transcripts.

Dante’s schedules.

His father’s old routes.

Dock manifests.

Security rotations.

And one file labeled:

SERENA.

She froze.

Dante opened it.

Photographs of her.

At school.

At charity events.

At nineteen.

At twenty-two.

At the Cavali estate before she had ever met Dante.

Serena went pale.

“My father had me watched.”

Patricia whispered:

“Yes.”

Serena turned.

“You knew?”

“I knew he monitored your security.”

“This isn’t security.”

Patricia began crying.

“No.”

Dante opened another file.

A typed strategy memo.

MARRIAGE INTEGRATION.

Phase One:

Create proximity.

Phase Two:

Earn Cavali trust.

Phase Three:

Access internal schedules.

Dante looked at Serena.

She stared at the paper.

“I heard only part of it.”

“I know.”

He turned the page.

Phase Four:

If subject resists cooperation, isolate emotionally.

Serena stopped breathing.

Dante continued reading.

Encourage fear response around Dante Cavali.

Use prior incident if necessary.

He looked at her.

“What prior incident?”

Serena stepped backward.

“No.”

Dante’s voice softened.

“Serena.”

She shook her head.

“I don’t want to do this now.”

Footsteps sounded above.

Closer.

Dante closed the file.

“We may not get another now.”

Serena stared at the floor.

Then whispered:

“When I was seventeen, Carlo came to my father’s house drunk.”

Patricia closed her eyes.

Dante became still.

Serena continued.

“He cornered me.”

Dante’s face changed.

“He didn’t…”

“No.”

She shook her head quickly.

“My brother came in.”

“Matteo?”

“Yes.”

“He stopped him.”

Dante knew Matteo Romano had died at twenty.

Car accident.

Serena’s voice broke.

“After that, loud footsteps behind closed doors made me panic.”

Dante looked at the memo again.

“Your father used that.”

“Yes.”

“He wanted you afraid around me.”

“Yes.”

“Because fear would keep emotional distance.”

“Yes.”

“And make the marriage look real enough without letting me get close.”

Serena nodded.

Dante’s hand tightened around the paper.

Patricia whispered:

“Vincent said it was necessary.”

Serena looked at her mother.

“He used the worst night of my life as strategy.”

Patricia cried.

“I know.”

Dante stared at the file.

Then found one final note.

HANDLER: C. ESPOSITO.

He looked toward the door.

May you like

Carlo had not simply been the man attacking tonight.

He had been part of Serena’s prison from the beginning.
