Chapter 10 - The Empty Ballroom Trap

By noon, the Grand Whitmore ballroom had been cleared of broken crystal, wilted flowers, and abandoned champagne.

Only the long velvet-covered head table remained.

Claire stood beneath the same ceiling camera that had exposed Preston and watched Nathan test a portable recorder with Detective Chen.

Sophie entered carrying coffee.

"This is surreal."

Claire looked at the empty dance floor.

"Yesterday there were two hundred people here."

"And a string quartet."

"And a groom who thought the camera was decoration."

Sophie handed her a cup.

"What's the plan?"

Claire took a sip.

"We leak that the hidden archive contains a complete image of the master authorization file."

"But it doesn't."

"Correct."

"And Victor believes he has the only master file."

"We hope."

Nathan joined them.

"He will want to know what you actually recovered."

Claire said, "That's why Margaret scheduled an emergency board review here at six."

Sophie stared.

"Here?"

"Victor knows the ballroom system was preserved. He also knows James used hotel infrastructure for hidden backups. If he thinks we found the master file on the recorder, he'll worry there is a copy he cannot control."

"What if he just runs?"

Chen answered from behind them.

"Then we have warrants in progress and border alerts if the financial evidence supports them. The trap is not a substitute for the investigation. It's a chance to observe what he does when he believes a specific piece of evidence exists."

Sophie nodded.

"Facts first. Anger later."

Claire glanced at her.

"Margaret's line."

"I'm stealing it."

At 1:15 p.m., Ruth Bell delivered the original trust restatement to the court. Margaret returned with a certified copy.

She placed it on the ballroom table.

"The old competency clause is revoked. The anti-fraud clause is valid."

Sophie asked, "Does that mean Preston loses his shares?"

"No. It means his voting rights can be suspended after judicial review if the fraud is proved. Ownership is different from voting authority."

"Good."

Claire looked at her.

"Good?"

"I don't want Dad's document used as revenge. I want the truth to decide what happens."

Margaret nodded approvingly.

"Exactly."

Evelyn arrived at two with a small suitcase.

She had moved out of the bridal suite and into a room under her mother's name.

Sophie hugged her.

"Are you okay?"

Evelyn laughed softly.

"No. But I'm functional."

Claire asked, "Did Preston contact you?"

"Nine times. I didn't answer. Then he sent this."

She handed Claire her phone.

The message read: Victor will destroy me and take Claire with me. Please meet me alone.

Claire said, "Don't."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

"You almost sounded like old Claire."

Claire caught herself.

"Sorry. What do you want to do?"

"I want to answer him with Detective Chen listening."

Chen nodded.

"We can arrange that."

Preston called again at 2:19.

Evelyn answered from a private conference room while Chen recorded with consent.

"What do you want?"

Preston sounded exhausted.

"I need to see you."

"No."

"Evelyn."

"You framed Sophie at our wedding."

"I know."

"You forged medical evidence."

"Victor's lawyer prepared the filing. I signed it."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"That is not better."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"I thought if the vote stayed under my control for thirty days, I could unwind the transfers before anyone found out."

"So you would ruin Sophie for thirty days."

"I told myself it would be temporary."

"You told yourself a lot."

Preston was quiet.

"Victor has been moving money for years. Dad found out. I helped hide the last round because the company was overleveraged and Victor convinced me exposure would collapse the refinancing. Then every cover-up needed another one."

Evelyn asked, "Why didn't you go to Claire?"

"Because she would have stopped it."

"That was the point."

"I know that now."

Evelyn's voice shook.

"No. You know you got caught now. Those are different things."

Preston did not answer.

She continued.

"Is there a master authorization file?"

A pause.

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Victor keeps it on an encrypted solid-state drive."

"Where?"

"He moves it. Sometimes his office safe. Sometimes a private storage vault."

Chen wrote a note and slid it to Evelyn.

Ask what is on it.

Evelyn did.

Preston said, "Signature certificates, altered approval logs, recordings cut together from real meetings. Enough to make Claire look like she approved Marlowe and Cedar transfers. Enough to make me look like I acted under her direction if Victor needs that story."

Claire listened from the other side of the glass.

Sophie whispered, "He built versions for everyone."

Nathan nodded.

"Insurance."

Evelyn asked, "Why tell me?"

Preston's voice broke slightly.

"Because I married you yesterday and destroyed it before dinner."

Evelyn stared at the table.

"You don't get to make that sound romantic."

"I know."

"Stop saying that."

Another silence.

Then Preston said, "Victor called me ten minutes ago. He thinks Claire recovered the master file from Dad's hidden archive."

Claire looked at Chen.

The leak had worked.

Evelyn asked, "What will he do?"

"Find out what she has. If he thinks it's complete, he'll try to replace it with his version or destroy the copy."

"How?"

"He still has legacy administrator credentials for the Grand Whitmore AV network."

Nathan cursed under his breath.

"I changed them."

Chen asked quietly, "All of them?"

Nathan's face tightened.

"Maybe not the maintenance controller."

Evelyn said into the phone, "Where will Victor go?"

Preston answered, "The ballroom."

Claire closed her eyes for one second.

Exactly where they were waiting.

At 5:38 p.m., hotel security reported Victor's car entering the underground garage.

He had been released after questioning pending further investigation. He carried a slim black case.

Chen positioned officers out of sight.

Nathan monitored the network from a service room.

Margaret sat at the head table with Claire, Sophie, and two independent board members who had agreed to attend the emergency review.

Evelyn stayed in the adjoining salon.

At 5:57, Victor entered the ballroom.

He looked around at the empty tables.

"How theatrical."

Claire said, "You always liked a boardroom with good lighting."

Victor placed the black case on the table.

"Where is Preston?"

"Not invited."

"Interesting. He told me you recovered the master file."

Claire watched his eyes.

"Did he?"

"Did you?"

"Sit down."

Victor remained standing.

"If this is a board meeting, where is the agenda?"

Margaret slid one across the table.

"Item one: preservation of financial evidence. Item two: suspension of executive access. Item three: forensic audit."

Victor laughed.

"You think a piece of paper makes this legitimate?"

Claire said, "No. The restated trust and board bylaws do."

His eyes flicked toward the ceiling camera.

Claire saw him notice it.

The same blinking blue-red light.

"You're recording me."

"The ballroom records continuously. You knew that yesterday."

Victor looked at the black case, then back at Claire.

"Show me the file."

"Why?"

"Because if James copied internal authorization data onto an unsecured archive, he exposed confidential customer and banking information."

Sophie said, "You sound worried about privacy all of a sudden."

Victor ignored her.

Claire leaned back.

"Tell me what should be on the master file, and I'll tell you whether ours matches."

Victor smiled.

"Nice try."

He picked up the black case.

At that moment Nathan's voice came through Claire's discreet earpiece.

"He's accessing the maintenance controller. Ballroom node."

Claire said, "Victor."

He stopped.

"You brought a device into a room while logging into its control network. What were you planning to do?"

His face changed only slightly.

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

Nathan's voice again.

"He's pushing a firmware package. It would wipe local storage indexes."

Claire looked at Chen, concealed near the service entrance.

Chen stepped into view.

"Mr. Lang, put the case on the table."

Victor froze.

Two officers appeared behind her.

"Now."

Victor set the case down.

Chen opened it after photographing the latches.

Inside was an encrypted solid-state drive and a maintenance laptop.

Nathan came forward.

"That's the master drive."

Victor looked at him with pure contempt.

"You don't know that."

Nathan said, "I recognize the serial label. You had me register it as an emergency backup six months ago."

Victor's expression finally broke.

Sophie whispered, "He brought the evidence himself."

Claire looked at the ceiling camera.

"People make strange choices when they're afraid of what a recording might show."

Victor stared at her.

"You never had the master file."

Claire did not answer.

He understood anyway.

"You lied."

"I gave you a reason to reveal the truth."

Chen took the drive.

"And now we preserve it."

May you like

Victor's eyes went to the ballroom doors.

They were already guarded.
