Chapter 11 - The Footage at 11:43

The master drive did not open quickly.

It took investigators, a forensic warrant, and nearly six hours to produce a verified image without altering the original.

Claire, Sophie, Margaret, and Evelyn waited in a hotel conference room while Detective Chen moved between them and the digital lab.

At 12:14 a.m., almost twenty-four hours after Victor's threatening call, Chen returned with a printed timeline.

"The drive contains forged authorization packages for twelve Cedar transfers."

Sophie asked, "All under our names?"

"Six under yours, four under Claire's, two under Preston's."

Claire looked up.

"Preston's too?"

"Yes. Some appear designed to make him look like a passive signatory. Others make Claire look like the initiating executive."

Margaret said, "Victor built alternate narratives."

"Exactly."

Evelyn asked, "What about the recordings?"

Chen sat down.

"Edited composites. Words from separate meetings stitched together. Forensic audio analysis should establish the cuts."

Sophie breathed out.

"So Claire is cleared."

Chen held up a hand.

"The evidence strongly supports that the approvals were fabricated. Formal conclusions take time."

Claire nodded.

"What else?"

Chen looked at the timeline.

"Something more important. The drive contained references to an original video file deleted from the main corporate server on March twenty-ninth at 11:51 p.m."

Claire's skin prickled.

"Dad's last night."

"Yes. The hidden recorder Nathan showed us retained a copy."

Sophie leaned forward.

"What does it show?"

Chen was careful.

"Not your father's death. James was at home by then. It shows activity in the headquarters records basement."

"Who?"

"Victor. And Preston."

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

"Together?"

"For part of it."

Chen opened her laptop.

"You should see the relevant segment because Preston's attorney has agreed he may be interviewed afterward with counsel present."

The footage appeared.

Timestamp: March 29, 11:43 p.m.

The basement camera showed Victor entering with a document box. One minute later Preston followed.

There was no audio.

Victor opened a cabinet and removed a folder.

Preston stood near the door, agitated, gesturing sharply.

Victor pulled out papers and fed several into a shred bin.

Sophie whispered, "The trust restatement?"

Margaret shook her head.

"The original was already with Ruth. It could be a copy or the appointment notice."

At 11:47, Preston grabbed Victor's wrist.

Victor shoved him away.

Preston pointed toward the camera.

Victor looked up.

Then he pulled out his phone.

At 11:50, the visible camera feed cut to black.

Chen paused.

"The main system was remotely disabled. But James's hidden recorder continued capturing a secondary angle from the loading corridor."

She switched views.

Victor emerged carrying the box.

Preston followed empty-handed.

At the elevator, Preston snatched one paper from the top of the box.

Victor tried to take it back.

Preston folded it and put it inside his jacket.

Sophie whispered, "What paper?"

Chen held up an evidence photograph.

"We recovered it this afternoon from Preston's attorney. He surrendered it after the master drive was seized."

It was the March twenty-ninth appointment card with Ruth Bell's name.

Claire stared.

"So Preston knew Dad met Ruth."

"By 11:50 that night, yes."

Margaret said, "He may not have known what document was signed."

"Correct."

Chen closed the video.

"The footage also shows Victor leaving with records he later denied possessing. That supports obstruction and evidence destruction allegations."

Evelyn asked, "And Preston?"

Chen looked toward the door.

"He is ready to talk."

Preston entered with Leonard Cross.

He looked older than he had the previous morning.

No arrogance. No performance.

Just exhaustion and fear.

Cross said, "My client is providing a limited statement pursuant to a cooperation agreement under discussion. No final agreement exists."

Chen nodded.

"Understood."

Preston sat across from his sisters.

Sophie did not move closer to Claire. She did not need to.

Chen began.

"Why were you in the records basement at 11:43 p.m. on March twenty-ninth?"

Preston looked at Cross, then answered.

"Victor called me. He said Dad had met a notary and changed the trust. He wanted to find the copy before Margaret got it."

"Did you know what the change was?"

"No."

"Did you help destroy documents?"

"I watched Victor destroy them."

"Did you stop him?"

Preston looked at the table.

"I tried once. Then I let him continue."

Sophie asked, "Why?"

Cross started to object, but Preston lifted a hand.

"Because by then I was already in too deep."

Claire said, "That's not an answer."

He looked at her.

"I had authorized the Cedar transfers. Not all of them, but enough. Victor told me the money would cover covenant payments and return within days. The first time, it did. The second time, most of it did. Then I found out he was skimming."

"And you kept helping."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because if I exposed him, I exposed myself."

There it was.

Not loyalty.

Not saving the company.

Fear of consequence.

Preston continued.

"Dad confronted me March fourteenth. He gave me until Monday to disclose everything. Victor said if I confessed, the lenders would freeze credit, the board would remove us, and thousands of employees would be at risk."

Margaret asked, "Was that true?"

"Partly. The company was under pressure. But Victor exaggerated it. I learned that later."

Claire said, "You canceled Dad's audit."

"Victor prepared the cancellation. I delivered it."

"With Dad's forged signature?"

Preston's face tightened.

"Yes."

Sophie whispered, "You forged Dad."

"Victor did the signature. I knew it wasn't real."

"Same difference."

Preston nodded.

"Yes."

Claire watched him carefully.

"Did you have anything to do with Dad's death?"

Cross leaned forward immediately.

"My client will answer clearly."

Preston looked straight at Claire.

"No."

"Did Victor?"

"Not that I know."

"Did anyone alter Dad's medication, delay care, threaten him, anything?"

"No. I left the house at six that evening after arguing with him. Sophie was there later. The house nurse was there. Dad died after midnight. I didn't touch his medication. I didn't ask anyone else to."

Chen said, "Medical review found no evidence of poisoning or tampering. His cardiologist confirms the heart attack was consistent with his condition."

Sophie closed her eyes.

A terrible possibility finally had an answer.

Their father had died from illness.

The betrayal happened around his death, not through it.

Claire asked the question that mattered now.

"Why frame Sophie at the wedding?"

Preston looked at his youngest sister.

"Because the trust vote was the next morning. Victor said if Sophie's vote was suspended, I could control the refinancing and clean up the remaining transfers before the new audit."

Sophie said, "You planted the phone."

"Yes."

"You used your own medical report to make me look unstable."

"Victor's legal contact suggested it. I approved it."

"You sent the threats?"

Preston hesitated.

"Some."

"Which ones?"

"The voting authorization messages. Not the photo outside your counseling center."

Chen said, "We traced that photo to a private investigator retained through Victor's office."

Sophie looked sick.

"You let someone follow me."

Preston's voice broke.

"Yes."

"And you kept telling yourself it was temporary."

"Yes."

"Stop saying yes like confession repairs it."

Preston looked down.

"I don't think it does."

The room went quiet.

Evelyn finally spoke.

"Did you ever plan to tell me?"

Preston turned toward her.

"I wanted to."

"That's not what I asked."

He swallowed.

"No."

Evelyn nodded as if she had expected the answer but needed to hear it anyway.

"Thank you. That is the first useful thing you've given me."

Cross ended the interview soon after.

As Preston stood to leave, Sophie said his name.

He stopped.

"I loved you," she said.

His face folded.

"I know."

"And I was scared of you last night. Both were true."

Preston nodded, eyes wet.

"I know."

"You don't get my forgiveness because you're finally frightened too."

"I know."

This time she let him say it.

He left with his attorney.

Detective Chen gathered the files.

"Victor will be charged based on evidence destruction, fraud, conspiracy, and related offenses once prosecutors finalize the complaint. Preston's cooperation will be considered, but it does not erase his conduct."

Claire looked at Sophie.

"What do you want now?"

Sophie thought for a long moment.

"Breakfast."

Claire blinked.

Sophie almost smiled.

"A normal breakfast. Somewhere nobody has a trust document."

Evelyn laughed softly.

Margaret said, "I know a place across the river. Terrible coffee, excellent pancakes."

Claire stood.

May you like

"Perfect."

For the first time, they walked out of the hotel without looking back at the camera.
