Chapter 5 - The Choice Evelyn Made

No one spoke for nearly a minute.

Finally, Charlotte said, “Play it again.”

Jonah did.

Claire’s face reappeared.

The words did not change.

It was Evelyn herself.

Charlotte watched her mother become the center of the mystery again.

Mara whispered, “That makes no sense.”

Lena shook her head.

“I saw the tray. Evelyn never touched it.”

Sebastian said, “You saw what she wanted you to see.”

Lena looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Evelyn planned rooms the way generals plan battlefields.”

Charlotte turned.

“You knew my mother that well?”

“I knew your mother was never passive.”

Mara stood.

“If Evelyn switched the vial, then she knew the antidote had been compromised.”

Charlotte looked at her.

“And she replaced it with what?”

“I don’t know.”

“You injected her.”

“Yes.”

“What was in the vial?”

“I thought naloxone and supportive medication.”

“Could something else mimic her death?”

Mara went still.

Jonah looked up.

Sebastian whispered, “No.”

Mara said, “There are drugs that can create profound respiratory depression.”

Charlotte stared.

“You’re saying my mother might have staged her death.”

Lena shook her head violently.

“No. I saw her afterward.”

“Did you see her body leave?”

“No.”

Jonah said, “I did.”

Charlotte turned.

“What?”

“I escorted the transport.”

“To the morgue?”

“Yes.”

“Did you stay until intake?”

He hesitated.

“No.”

“Why?”

“I was pulled back by a security alert.”

Charlotte laughed once.

“Of course.”

Sebastian paced.

“If Evelyn staged her death, why?”

Mara looked at the screen.

“To force Victor to move.”

Charlotte understood.

Her mother had suspected him.

But suspicion was not proof.

A dead chairman would trigger emergency trust controls.

Victor would reveal what he intended to seize.

Charlotte said, “Then why let everyone believe she stayed dead?”

Mara’s face tightened.

“Maybe something went wrong.”

Jonah’s phone buzzed.

He answered.

“Reed.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

He looked at Charlotte.

“They found Victor’s car.”

“Where?”

“Parking structure three blocks away.”

“Bianca?”

“No one inside.”

Sebastian said, “He switched vehicles.”

Jonah nodded.

A second call came.

He answered.

Then froze.

“What hospital?”

Everyone stared.

Jonah ended the call.

“Lena.”

She stood.

“What?”

“A woman matching Claire Arden’s description was admitted two hours ago after a hit-and-run.”

Sebastian went white.

“Alive?”

“Critical.”

He was already at the door.

Charlotte caught his arm.

“We go together.”

The hospital was locked down by private security before they arrived.

Not hotel security.

Men in plain suits.

Jonah stopped Charlotte at the entrance.

“I don’t know these people.”

“Then whose are they?”

A voice answered.

“Mine.”

A woman stepped from the elevator.

Bianca.

Unbound.

Uninjured.

Sebastian ran to her.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded.

Charlotte stared.

“Victor let you go?”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

“I escaped.”

“How?”

Bianca looked embarrassed.

“I bit him.”

Charlotte blinked.

Sebastian almost smiled.

Bianca said, “He tried to move me into another car. I got the door open and ran.”

“Who are the men?”

“My lawyers’ security team.”

Charlotte raised an eyebrow.

“You have a security team?”

“I have twenty-nine percent of a company, apparently.”

“Fair.”

Bianca’s face softened.

“Claire is upstairs.”

“Have you seen her?”

“No.”

Sebastian whispered, “She’s really alive.”

Bianca nodded.

Charlotte asked, “Who hit her?”

“Victor.”

“You saw?”

“No. Claire called me before it happened.”

Charlotte’s pulse jumped.

“What did she say?”

“That she had proof Evelyn survived the first attempt.”

“First attempt?”

Bianca looked at Mara.

“Your injection wasn’t the first poisoning.”

Mara went pale.

“The slow-acting agent.”

“Yes.”

“So Claire knows who administered it.”

Bianca nodded.

“Victor.”

Sebastian clenched his jaw.

Charlotte said, “And my mother switched the vial because she knew.”

“Yes.”

“To fake death?”

“Partly.”

“What does partly mean?”

Bianca’s eyes filled.

“She planned to disappear for forty-eight hours, collect evidence, then return.”

Charlotte felt cold.

“But she didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor intercepted the ambulance.”

Jonah whispered, “My security alert.”

Bianca nodded.

“The alert that pulled you away was fake.”

Charlotte looked at Jonah.

His face crumpled.

“Where did they take her?”

Bianca said, “A private clinic.”

“Where is she now?”

“I don’t know.”

Charlotte stared.

“You just told me Claire had proof she survived.”

“She survived the first forty-eight hours.”

“And after?”

“Claire lost contact.”

Charlotte’s heart pounded.

Sixteen weeks.

Her mother could be alive.

Or could have died in some hidden room.

The not knowing was worse.

“Can Claire tell us?”

“If she wakes up.”

Sebastian said, “Take us upstairs.”

They reached intensive care.

Claire lay unconscious behind glass.

Charlotte looked at Sebastian.

He had tears on his face.

He did not wipe them.

Bianca stood on his other side.

For once, she looked young.

Not glamorous.

Not cruel.

Just afraid.

A doctor approached.

“She has internal injuries, but surgery went well.”

“Will she wake up?” Sebastian asked.

“We expect so.”

Charlotte exhaled.

Mara stepped closer.

“Charlotte.”

She turned.

Mara held out her phone.

“I found something in Evelyn’s legal archive.”

“What?”

“A draft power of attorney.”

“To who?”

“Claire.”

Sebastian stared.

“What power?”

“Authority to access SA-4 and the succession vault.”

Charlotte looked at Claire through the glass.

“Then Victor wasn’t hunting only Bianca.”

“No.”

“He was hunting Claire too.”

“Yes.”

Bianca whispered, “He thought she was dead for years.”

“Why reveal herself now?”

“Because I called her.”

Charlotte turned.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“The same week Claire’s founder card opened the archive.”

Bianca nodded.

“I told her Victor said Charlotte was dead.”

Charlotte stared.

“That’s what brought her back.”

“Yes.”

Mara said, “And it probably triggered Victor’s final transfer.”

Charlotte looked at the clock.

10:42 p.m.

Victor had demanded the succession instrument at midnight.

She still did not have it.

Jonah said, “We need to set the ballroom.”

Sebastian looked at Charlotte.

“You’re actually going?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t have what he wants.”

“He doesn’t know that.”

Bianca said, “I’m coming.”

“No.”

“It’s my company too.”

“You were kidnapped six hours ago.”

“And you were dragged across a lobby.”

“That is not equivalent.”

Bianca almost smiled.

“Still coming.”

Charlotte looked at her.

Six hours earlier, she would have enjoyed throwing Bianca out.

Now the situation was more complicated.

Not forgiven.

Complicated.

“Fine.”

Sebastian said, “Absolutely not.”

Both women looked at him.

He stopped.

Bianca raised an eyebrow.

“Continue.”

He sighed.

“Fine.”

Charlotte’s phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A video.

Victor stood inside the Solmere Grand Ballroom.

Alone.

Behind him, a giant screen showed a live countdown.

01:16:43.

Victor spoke.

“Charlotte, you have until midnight.”

He held up a folder.

“I have the document you were looking for.”

Charlotte’s breath caught.

The real succession instrument.

Victor smiled.

“You thought I wanted you to bring it.”

He opened the folder.

“I already have it.”

Bianca whispered, “Then what does he want?”

Victor answered from the video as if he had heard.

“What I need is your signature.”

Charlotte stared.

The video continued.

“And Bianca’s.”

A second screen appeared behind him.

Offshore transfer structure.

SA-4 assets.

Hundreds of accounts.

Victor said, “At midnight, either the heirs authorize the consolidation, or every protected identity in the network is released publicly.”

Mara went white.

Charlotte whispered, “He’s holding thousands of people hostage with exposure.”

“Some are criminals,” Mara said.

“And some are witnesses, refugees, abuse survivors, dissidents.”

Victor smiled at the camera.

“Come to the ballroom.”

The video ended.

Charlotte looked through the ICU glass at Claire.

Then at Bianca.

“Now we know what the company really owns.”

Bianca whispered, “Secrets.”

May you like

Charlotte nodded.

“And tonight we decide whether they own us.”
