Chapter 6 - Midnight in the Ballroom

At 11:37 p.m., the Grand Ballroom looked ready for a wedding.

Crystal chandeliers glowed above white tables.

Gold chairs stood in perfect rows.

The stage curtains were open.

Victor had chosen elegance for extortion.

Charlotte hated that she understood the instinct.

Public spaces created pressure.

Luxury created obedience.

Everyone was trained to behave inside beautiful rooms.

Charlotte entered through the main doors.

Bianca walked beside her.

Sebastian, Jonah, and Mara remained outside the visible perimeter.

Victor stood onstage.

Three armed men were positioned near the exits.

“Right on time,” he said.

Charlotte looked around.

“No guests?”

“Not yet.”

Bianca said, “You hit my mother.”

Victor looked at her.

“Your mother should have stayed dead.”

Bianca’s face changed.

Charlotte touched her arm.

Not comfort.

Warning.

Victor smiled.

“How strange.”

“What?”

“You two.”

Charlotte said, “Disappointed?”

“Amused.”

“You spent years teaching her to hate me.”

“I gave her facts.”

“You gave me edited facts,” Bianca said.

Victor shrugged.

“Everyone edits.”

Charlotte held up a folder.

“Our signatures?”

“Yes.”

“Show me the succession instrument.”

Victor lifted his copy.

“First, come closer.”

Charlotte walked to the first row.

Bianca stayed with her.

Victor said, “Your mother made this unnecessarily difficult.”

“You mean by trying to stop you.”

“I mean by confusing morality with control.”

Charlotte laughed.

“That sounds like something a man says right before prison.”

Victor’s smile faded.

“No police are coming.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Jonah Reed’s communications are being mirrored.”

Charlotte’s stomach tightened.

He knew about Jonah.

Victor continued.

“And Sebastian’s security credentials have been revoked.”

Bianca whispered, “How?”

Victor smiled.

“I built the current system.”

Charlotte understood why her mother had never trusted digital records.

“Then why meet us physically?”

“Because biometric consent cannot be spoofed under the amended trust.”

“You need live signatures.”

“Yes.”

“And if we refuse?”

Victor gestured toward the screen.

The countdown showed twenty-one minutes.

“The SA-4 identity map publishes.”

Bianca said, “You’d destroy your own leverage.”

“Not all of it.”

Charlotte studied him.

“What did my mother discover that made you panic?”

For the first time, Victor looked irritated.

“She discovered the network had expanded.”

“To sanctioned clients?”

“To governments.”

Silence.

Charlotte felt the scale change.

“Which governments?”

Victor smiled.

“Sign.”

“No.”

He sighed.

One of the armed men moved closer.

Bianca said, “If you kill us, you get nothing.”

“Correct.”

“So you need us conscious.”

“Yes.”

“Then stop pretending the guns impress us.”

Victor looked almost proud.

“Claire’s daughter.”

Bianca’s jaw tightened.

Charlotte said, “Where is my mother?”

Victor did not answer.

Charlotte stepped closer.

“Where is Evelyn?”

His expression changed.

“You still think she might be alive.”

“Is she?”

Victor looked at the countdown.

“Nineteen minutes.”

“Answer.”

“She survived longer than expected.”

Charlotte’s heart slammed.

“Where?”

“A clinic.”

“What happened?”

“She escaped.”

Bianca inhaled.

Charlotte froze.

“When?”

“Five days after her staged death.”

“Then where is she?”

Victor smiled.

“I don’t know.”

Charlotte stared.

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

“You would have hunted her.”

“I did.”

“And failed.”

His smile disappeared.

Good.

Charlotte said, “That’s why you rushed the succession.”

Victor said nothing.

“You thought she might come back.”

Still nothing.

“And then I did instead.”

He looked at her.

“You always were the more inconvenient one.”

Charlotte almost smiled.

“Thank you.”

A noise came from the rear.

One guard touched his earpiece.

Victor glanced toward him.

That was enough.

Bianca moved.

She grabbed a champagne bottle from a service table and smashed it against the guard’s wrist.

The gun fell.

Charlotte kicked it under a chair.

Victor shouted.

The second guard rushed forward.

The ballroom lights went out.

Jonah.

Charlotte heard Sebastian shout from somewhere near the service door.

“Down!”

She dropped.

A gunshot cracked.

Glass shattered.

Emergency lights flickered.

Bianca crawled toward the stage.

Charlotte grabbed her ankle.

“No.”

“My mother’s document.”

“Not worth dying for.”

“It’s my life.”

“Exactly.”

Victor’s voice thundered.

“Turn the lights on!”

A new voice answered through the sound system.

“No.”

Everyone froze.

Charlotte knew that voice.

Her mother.

“Mom?”

The screens behind the stage changed.

Evelyn Vale appeared live.

Older.

Thinner.

A scar along her temple.

Alive.

Charlotte forgot the room.

Forgot Victor.

Forgot the guns.

“Mom.”

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“Charlotte, stay down.”

Charlotte laughed through tears.

“You’re alive.”

“I am.”

Victor looked genuinely stunned.

“That’s impossible.”

Evelyn smiled.

“You always did underestimate women you believed were cornered.”

The ballroom doors locked automatically.

Jonah’s voice came over the speakers.

“Security override restored.”

Sebastian shouted, “Weapons down!”

One guard surrendered.

The other ran toward a side exit and found it sealed.

Victor backed toward the stage.

Evelyn continued.

“The countdown is false.”

Charlotte looked at the screen.

Still ticking.

“The SA-4 release cannot be triggered from the ballroom,” Evelyn said. “I removed that authority before my death.”

Victor shouted at the camera.

“You don’t have control.”

“No.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Charlotte does.”

Charlotte stared.

Mara’s voice came through her earpiece.

“The real succession instrument is already filed.”

“What?”

“Your mother filed it remotely six minutes ago.”

Victor’s face collapsed.

“No.”

Evelyn continued.

“And Bianca’s amended beneficiary claim was confirmed by the court this evening.”

Bianca stared at Charlotte.

“You knew?”

“No.”

Evelyn said, “Victor, your leverage expired at 11:41.”

He looked at the countdown.

It reached zero.

Nothing happened.

Silence.

Then every chandelier came back on.

Victor stood alone on the stage.

The theater was over.

Police entered through the rear doors.

Federal agents followed.

Victor looked at Charlotte.

“You think this fixes anything?”

“No.”

“You have no idea how many people depend on that network.”

“Then we separate protection from corruption.”

“You can’t.”

“We’ll try.”

“You’ll destroy Solmere.”

Charlotte looked around the ballroom.

“Then Solmere will deserve to be destroyed.”

Victor laughed.

“You sound like your mother.”

Charlotte looked at Evelyn on the screen.

“Good.”

They arrested Victor.

He did not resist.

As agents led him away, he stopped beside Bianca.

“Your mother used you too.”

Bianca looked at him.

“Maybe.”

He smiled.

“You’ll learn.”

She answered, “I already did.”

Then he looked at Charlotte.

“Ask Evelyn why she never came home.”

Charlotte’s joy cooled.

Victor was taken away.

The screen remained on.

Evelyn looked exhausted.

Charlotte stepped onto the stage.

“Where are you?”

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“Not over an open line.”

“Mom.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Charlotte’s voice broke.

“I buried you.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“I spent four months thinking I had no one.”

“I know.”

“You let them declare me dead too.”

“That I did not know.”

“Why didn’t you contact me?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Three weeks after I escaped.”

Charlotte froze.

“I never got anything.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

“Then someone intercepted it.”

Mara whispered through the earpiece, “Charlotte.”

She turned.

Mara was staring at Sebastian.

Sebastian slowly raised his hands.

Charlotte looked at him.

“What?”

Mara said, “The message went through executive secure relay.”

Sebastian shook his head.

“I never saw it.”

Jonah opened his laptop.

“Access logs say otherwise.”

Sebastian went pale.

Charlotte whispered, “You received my mother’s message.”

“No.”

“Your credentials did.”

“I swear.”

Bianca stared at her uncle.

Sebastian’s voice cracked.

“I did not know she was alive.”

Charlotte looked at the screen.

Evelyn said softly, “Then Victor wasn’t the only one inside your system.”

The ballroom doors locked again.

Not Jonah this time.

The lights dimmed.

A new message appeared across every screen.

HELLO, CHARLOTTE.

Evelyn went white.

Charlotte stared.

The message changed.

May you like

YOUR MOTHER ESCAPED.

YOU WON’T.
