Chapter 6 - The House with the Red Room

The old Sterling townhouse on East Seventy-Fourth Street had been empty for three years, officially.

Unofficially, someone had kept the utilities active.

Daniel’s team found a rear security feed showing Victoria entering twenty-two minutes earlier with Leo and Eli.

Julian watched the footage on a tablet in the back of the SUV.

Mara sat beside him.

Victoria held one boy by each hand.

Leo resisted.

Eli cried.

Mara’s entire body tightened.

“I’m going in.”

Julian looked at her.

“No.”

“You said our sons.”

His expression changed.

“They may be yours biologically.”

“They are yours too.”

“Yes.”

“Then stop deciding alone.”

“This could become violent.”

“So could leaving them with her.”

Daniel turned from the front seat.

“Police are three minutes out. We have no sign Victoria is armed.”

Julian said, “We wait.”

Mara stared at the townhouse.

A flash of memory hit.

The red room.

A staircase.

A narrow passage behind the library shelves.

She opened the door.

“Mara!”

“I know another way in.”

Julian followed.

Daniel swore and signaled two officers to move with them.

Mara crossed the alley behind the townhouse and stopped at a rusted service gate.

“How do you know this?” Julian asked.

“I used it once.”

“When?”

“The night your father made me sign papers.”

“You escaped?”

“I tried.”

She pushed against a loose brick near the gate.

A latch released.

Julian stared.

“Amelia found flaws in everything,” he murmured.

Mara looked at him.

“Apparently she had good reasons.”

They entered a narrow basement corridor.

The air smelled of dust and old wood.

Mara stopped at the foot of the stairs.

“I remember crying here.”

Julian touched her arm.

“We can stop.”

“No.”

She climbed.

Voices came from above.

Victoria.

“Your father is confused. We’re going on a trip.”

Leo cried, “Want Mara.”

“Do not say that name.”

Eli whimpered.

Mara’s face changed.

Julian held up a hand.

“Wait.”

Victoria continued.

“You boys are mine. Do you understand? I am your mother.”

Leo said, “No.”

A slap sounded.

Julian moved before Daniel could stop him.

He reached the library doorway in seconds.

Victoria stood beside the fireplace.

Leo held his cheek.

Eli was pressed against the wall.

Julian’s voice was lethal.

“Step away from them.”

Victoria spun.

“How did you get in?”

“Step away.”

She grabbed Leo’s shoulder.

Mara entered behind Julian.

Victoria’s face twisted.

“You.”

Leo broke free.

“Mara!”

He ran into her arms.

Eli followed.

Mara dropped to her knees and held them both.

Victoria screamed, “They are not yours!”

Mara looked up.

“We can test that.”

Victoria stopped.

Julian saw fear cross her face.

“You already know the result,” he said.

She laughed wildly.

“You think DNA makes a mother?”

“No,” Mara said.

Victoria stared at her.

Mara continued, “But neither does possession.”

“You abandoned them.”

“I was unconscious.”

“You disappeared for four years.”

“Because your doctor drugged me.”

Victoria’s eyes flicked to Julian.

“Mercer is lying.”

“He confessed.”

“He will say anything to save himself.”

Julian held up his phone.

“We also have Ruth Calder’s recordings.”

Victoria’s face emptied.

Mara saw it.

“Ruth saved me.”

Victoria whispered, “Ruth ruined everything.”

Daniel stepped into the room.

“Mrs. Sterling, police are outside.”

Victoria backed toward the desk.

Julian said, “Don’t.”

She opened a drawer.

Daniel’s hand went to his holster.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Victoria pulled out a passport wallet, not a weapon.

She threw it onto the desk.

“Fine.”

Four passports slid across the wood.

All false names.

Two contained photographs of Leo and Eli.

Mara’s stomach turned.

“You planned this.”

Victoria’s laugh became brittle.

“I planned for survival.”

Julian looked at the passports.

“For how long?”

“Since the day they were born.”

“Why?”

“Because your father warned me you were weak where Amelia was concerned.”

Mara looked at Malcolm’s old desk.

“Your whole life depended on me staying dead.”

Victoria’s eyes met hers.

“Yes.”

The honesty shocked everyone.

Julian whispered, “Why did you do it?”

Victoria looked at him.

“You want a simple answer?”

“I want the truth.”

“I loved you.”

“That is not love.”

“No? I spent years standing beside you while you mourned a woman who chose chaos over you.”

“She did not choose anything. You forged my letter.”

Victoria’s chin lifted.

“Your father drafted it.”

Julian went still.

Mara looked at him.

Victoria smiled faintly.

“He told me exactly what to write.”

Julian said, “And you did.”

“Yes.”

“Then you forged her signature on the settlement.”

“I did not forge that.”

Mara frowned.

“Who did?”

Victoria’s eyes shifted toward the hall.

A cane tapped against the floor.

Malcolm appeared in the doorway.

Daniel swore.

“Who let you in?”

“This is still my property.”

Julian stared at his father.

“Did you forge Amelia’s signature?”

Malcolm looked at Victoria.

“You were supposed to leave.”

She laughed.

“Now you’re concerned about instructions?”

Julian stepped between them.

“Answer me.”

Malcolm sighed.

“Yes.”

Mara closed her eyes.

Julian’s voice shook with rage.

“You forged her consent to take her children.”

“I forged consent to protect them from scandal.”

“Stop using that word.”

“What word?”

“Protect.”

Malcolm looked at the twins clinging to Mara.

For once, he had no immediate answer.

Victoria said, “Tell him the rest.”

Malcolm turned.

“Be quiet.”

“No.”

Her smile was sharp now.

“You came here to sacrifice me.”

“You created this disaster.”

“You created me.”

Mara looked between them.

“What rest?”

Victoria pointed at Malcolm.

“He did not simply threaten Ruth. He paid the rehabilitation center to erase Amelia’s admission records.”

Julian stared at his father.

Malcolm’s face hardened.

“After Ruth died, yes.”

“Why?”

“Because by then you were married, the boys were settled, and Amelia had built another life.”

“You knew she was alive?”

A long silence.

Malcolm answered, “I learned two years ago.”

Julian looked as if he had been struck.

“You knew for two years.”

“I watched from a distance.”

“You knew where she was.”

“Yes.”

“You let her clean hotel rooms and work domestic jobs while her sons lived three miles away.”

“She was safe.”

Mara’s voice rose.

“I was empty.”

Malcolm looked at her.

“I had nightmares without names. I woke up humming a song I could not explain. I spent four years believing I had no family.”

“I am sorry.”

“No, you are sorry the door opened.”

He flinched.

Mara held Leo and Eli tighter.

“You saw me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Several times.”

“Did I ever look happy?”

Malcolm said nothing.

“That is your answer.”

Police sirens approached outside.

Victoria moved toward the window.

Julian said, “It’s over.”

She turned.

“No. It is not.”

“What else is there?”

She looked at Mara.

“You think she is innocent because she forgot.”

Mara’s stomach tightened.

“What are you talking about?”

Victoria walked to an old cabinet and opened it.

Inside was a thin folder.

She threw it at Julian.

“Ask your precious Amelia why she was coming to expose your father before she disappeared.”

Julian opened the folder.

Financial records.

Transfers from Sterling Foundation accounts to shell companies.

Mara stared at them.

“I don’t understand.”

Malcolm’s face changed.

“Victoria.”

She laughed.

“Oh, now you want silence?”

Julian looked at his father.

“What is this?”

Malcolm said nothing.

Victoria answered.

“Amelia discovered your father had been stealing from the company’s charitable foundation for years.”

Mara’s memory flashed.

A music program in Queens.

Missing grant money.

A spreadsheet.

She whispered, “The school.”

Julian looked at her.

“What?”

“My music program lost funding. I checked the grant records.”

The memory sharpened.

She saw Malcolm’s signature.

She saw millions moved through fake community organizations.

Mara looked at the old man.

“This was never only about me being poor.”

Malcolm’s silence confirmed it.

“You were afraid I would expose you.”

“Yes,” he said.

Julian stared at his father with something beyond anger.

“Everything.”

Malcolm looked at him.

Julian continued, “You destroyed my family to hide theft.”

“I protected the company.”

“You protected yourself.”

Police entered the foyer.

Daniel stepped aside to let detectives in.

Victoria folded her arms.

“Then arrest him too.”

One detective looked at Julian.

“We will be speaking with everyone.”

Mara looked down at the twins.

Leo touched her face.

“Mommy?”

The word was barely audible.

Mara stopped breathing.

Leo looked frightened.

She did not force an answer.

She kissed his forehead.

“You can call me Mara until you decide.”

He leaned against her.

Julian watched, tears burning behind his eyes.

The detective asked, “Mr. Sterling, are these children safe to remain with you tonight?”

Julian looked at Mara.

Then at the boys.

“Yes.”

Victoria laughed from across the room.

“No, Julian. You still don’t understand.”

He turned.

Her voice dropped.

“If Amelia remembers the foundation records, your father is not the only person who will want her silent.”

Mara’s face tightened.

“Who else?”

May you like

Victoria smiled without humor.

“The men who actually received the money.”
