Chapter 4 - The File Mara Never Knew Her Father Left Behind

Dante looked at Renner.

"Who is she?"

Mara almost laughed.

"I am standing here."

Renner nodded.

"Then you should hear it first."

He reached inside his coat.

Rafe raised his weapon.

Renner stopped.

"Envelope."

Dante said:

"Slowly."

Renner removed a flat brown file.

Placed it on the console table.

Mara saw the name before anyone touched it.

THOMAS ELLIS.

Her father.

Dead when she was twelve.

Officially a construction accident.

Renner looked at her.

"He wasn't a construction worker."

Mara stared.

"Yes, he was."

"No."

"He worked sites."

"Sometimes."

"What was he?"

Renner took a breath.

"Accountant."

Silence.

"For who?"

"Vale Maritime."

Sienna sat down.

Mara did not.

Renner continued:

"Your father discovered the same accounts you found years later."

Her stomach dropped.

"The same account number."

"Yes."

"That isn't possible."

"It is if the network never closed."

Dante opened the file.

Payroll records.

Thomas Ellis.

Internal audit consultant.

Vale Maritime.

Mara stared.

Her father had worked for Arthur Vale.

Renner continued:

"He copied ledgers."

"Why?"

"Because money was being moved through shipping contracts."

"Bribes?"

"Some."

"What else?"

Renner looked at Dante.

Dante's expression changed.

"Say it."

"Political money."

"Off-book acquisitions."

"Payments to organized crews."

Mara looked at Dante.

Mafia.

The word nobody in the penthouse used because nobody needed to.

Renner continued:

"Arthur was not working alone."

Dante said:

"My father."

Renner nodded.

"Gianni Marcel."

Sienna whispered:

"Oh God."

Dante's father had died nine years earlier.

His name still carried weight.

Renner said:

"Thomas Ellis was collecting evidence against both men."

Mara's knees weakened.

She sat.

"Did Arthur kill him?"

Renner shook his head.

"No."

"Did Gianni?"

"No."

"Then what happened?"

"He tried to leave."

"With the files?"

"Yes."

"Who stopped him?"

Renner looked at Dante.

"Your uncle."

Dante's face hardened.

"Roman."

His father's older brother.

The one man Dante had expelled from the family business after taking control.

Roman Marcel.

Alive.

Living in Florida.

At least officially.

Renner continued:

"Roman arranged the accident."

Mara stared.

"My father was murdered."

"Yes."

No dramatic collapse.

No scream.

Just a truth that made every memory tilt.

Her mother crying in the kitchen.

Insurance forms.

Closed casket.

Men from the company at the funeral.

One of them had been Arthur Vale.

Mara remembered his face now.

Older.

But unmistakable.

She looked at Sienna.

"Your father came to my father's funeral."

Sienna covered her mouth.

Renner nodded.

"Arthur paid for it."

Mara laughed once.

"How generous."

Dante asked:

"Why did Arthur search for Mara now?"

Renner hesitated.

"Because Thomas left one file missing."

"What file?"

"A bearer trust."

Dante's expression changed.

Sienna frowned.

"What is that?"

Renner answered:

"A trust holding an ownership stake."

"In what?"

He looked at Dante.

"Marcel Consolidated."

Silence.

Dante stared.

"How much?"

"Seventeen percent."

That was not a small number.

Marcel Consolidated controlled logistics.

Real estate.

Ports.

Security firms.

Investment vehicles.

Billions.

Sienna whispered:

"And Mara owns it?"

Renner shook his head.

"Not exactly."

"Then who?"

"Thomas Ellis created the trust for a child."

Mara's heart began pounding.

Renner looked at her.

"You."

Silence.

Mara stared.

"No."

"Yes."

"Why would my father own seventeen percent of Marcel?"

"He didn't."

"Then how did he create a trust?"

Renner looked at Dante.

"Gianni gave it to him."

Dante frowned.

"My father gave Thomas Ellis seventeen percent."

"To hold."

"For what?"

"As insurance."

"Against Roman."

Mara looked between them.

Renner continued:

"Gianni knew Roman was stealing."

"He wanted proof outside the family."

"Thomas held the documents."

"The shares were collateral."

Dante's jaw tightened.

"Then Thomas died."

"Yes."

"And the trust?"

"Disappeared."

"Until now."

Renner nodded.

Sienna looked at the velvet ring case on the table.

Then at her father’s payments.

Something changed in her face.

Mara saw it.

Dante saw it too.

He asked:

"What?"

Sienna shook her head.

"Nothing."

Dante stepped closer.

"Sienna."

She began crying.

"My father said the engagement ring came from an old Marcel estate collection."

Dante stared at the case.

"It did."

"No."

Sienna's voice broke.

"He said it was more important than that."

Renner closed his eyes.

Dante looked at him.

"You know."

Renner nodded.

"The ring contains the trust seal."

Silence.

Mara looked at the velvet case.

The diamond ring Sienna had opened Tuesday morning.

Renner continued:

"Not metaphorically."

"Inside the band is a micro-engraved account key."

Dante stared.

"My engagement ring."

"Gianni designed it that way."

Mara understood slowly.

The ring was not worth a billion dollars.

It unlocked something that might be.

Dante asked:

"How much is the trust worth now?"

Renner looked at Mara.

"With appreciation and voting rights?"

A pause.

"Just over one billion."

Nobody moved.

Then Sienna whispered:

"My father wasn't looking for Mara."

Dante turned.

May you like

She looked at the ring.

"He was looking for the person who could activate it."
