Chapter 5 - The Billion-Dollar Ring Was Never Meant for Sienna

The room stayed silent.

Dante picked up the velvet case.

Opened it.

The ring looked exactly as it had on Tuesday.

Large diamond.

Old platinum.

Marcel family crest beneath the setting.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

But suddenly none of that mattered.

Renner pointed toward the inside of the band.

"Magnification."

Rafe brought a loupe.

Dante examined it.

Then handed it to Mara.

She hesitated.

"Why me?"

"Because apparently everything in this room keeps being about you."

That was almost humor.

Almost.

Mara took the loupe.

Inside the band:

Tiny marks.

Too small to read with the naked eye.

Numbers.

Letters.

A symbol.

Renner said:

"Trust identifier."

Dante looked at him.

"How does it work?"

"The ring alone does nothing."

"What else?"

"Biometric verification."

Mara stared.

"Mine."

"Yes."

Sienna went pale.

Dante asked:

"Why would my father build a trust around a housekeeper's daughter?"

Mara flinched at the phrasing.

Dante heard himself.

"So did she."

He corrected:

"Thomas Ellis's daughter."

Renner answered:

"Because Thomas was supposed to hold it until Gianni removed Roman."

"He never got the chance."

"No."

"After Thomas died, Gianni hid the access key in the ring."

"Why a ring?"

Renner looked at Dante.

"Because no one in your family throws away heirlooms."

That was true.

Dante stared at the diamond.

Sienna whispered:

"My father knew."

Renner looked at her.

"Arthur knew the ring mattered."

"Did he know Mara was the beneficiary?"

"Recently."

"How?"

Renner's expression changed.

"He found Thomas's backup file."

Mara's eyes narrowed.

"Where?"

"Your mother's house."

Silence.

Mara stood.

"What?"

Renner looked ashamed.

"Arthur had it searched two months ago."

"My mother?"

"She wasn't home."

Mara's voice went cold.

"You entered my mother's house."

"I did not."

"But you knew."

"Yes."

Dante's expression hardened.

Renner continued:

"Arthur found the beneficiary page."

Sienna whispered:

"That is why he started looking for Mara."

"Yes."

Mara asked:

"What did he plan to do when he found me?"

Renner looked at Sienna.

Then at Dante.

"Get the ring activated before the wedding."

Dante frowned.

"Why before?"

"Because once activated, the trust has to be assigned."

"To whom?"

"The beneficiary chooses."

Mara laughed in disbelief.

"I choose where a billion-dollar voting stake goes."

"Yes."

"Why would Arthur think I would give it to him?"

Renner said:

"He didn't."

Silence.

"He thought you'd give it to Dante."

Dante stared.

Renner continued:

"Then after the marriage, Sienna's holding agreement would merge certain voting rights."

Sienna closed her eyes.

Dante looked at her.

"You knew about a holding agreement."

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Three weeks."

"Did you know it involved Mara?"

"No."

"Did you know it involved the ring?"

Sienna cried.

"Two days."

Tuesday.

The day the ring arrived.

Dante stared.

"You knew the ring was tied to something."

"My father said it was tied to an old family trust."

"And you said nothing."

"I thought it was yours."

"Did you ask?"

"No."

Mara watched the two of them.

Sienna had not planted the camera.

Not directly.

But she had known enough to stay quiet.

Again.

Dante asked:

"Why did Arthur need surveillance?"

Renner answered:

"To learn whether Mara recognized the ring."

Mara frowned.

"I'd never seen it."

"Your father had photographs."

"Where?"

"In the file Arthur found."

Dante looked at the camera parts.

"So the florist was watching her reaction."

"Yes."

Mara laughed softly.

"I didn't have one."

Renner almost smiled.

"That probably worried them."

Sienna sat down.

Her dark red dress suddenly looked theatrical.

Like a costume from a life that had already ended.

Dante closed the ring case.

"Party canceled."

Sienna looked up.

"The engagement too?"

He stared at her.

"Did you tell your father I planned to propose with this ring?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

"Did you know he wanted it here for another reason?"

"Yes."

"Then yes."

Her face broke.

Dante continued:

"The engagement is over."

Sienna cried silently.

No shouting.

No begging.

Maybe she had known this was coming from the moment Mara found the camera.

Then Mara said:

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

She immediately hated that all eyes were on her.

Dante frowned.

"No?"

"You cannot end an engagement because of me."

Sienna stared.

Dante said:

"I'm not."

"Then why now?"

"Because she knew someone was using my proposal to move ownership."

Sienna whispered:

"I didn't know all of it."

Dante looked at her.

"You knew enough to ask no questions."

That ended it.

Then Rafe's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His face changed.

"Dante."

"What?"

"Arthur Vale is downstairs."

Sienna stood.

"My father."

Rafe continued:

"He brought lawyers."

Dante looked at the ring case.

Then at Mara.

Renner whispered:

"He knows we found the trust."

Dante asked:

"What happens if Mara refuses to activate it?"

Renner's face hardened.

"Then Arthur will try to prove she is not Thomas Ellis's daughter."

Mara stared.

"What?"

May you like

Renner looked at her.

"That is the second file he found."
