Chapter 14 - The Hearing

The emergency probate hearing was sealed, but secrecy no longer felt like safety.
Mia sat beside her own attorney, not Adrian’s.
That had been nonnegotiable.
Victor Dane appeared by video from an undisclosed location through counsel. His lawyer argued that the trust’s triggering condition could not be verified because the alleged child had no legally acknowledged father.
Mia listened with growing anger as her son became “the alleged child.”
Her attorney touched her wrist.
“Don’t react.”
“I am reacting internally.”
“Your face is reacting externally.”
Across the aisle, Adrian almost smiled.
The judge reviewed the DNA report, birth documents, and chain of custody. She ordered an independent paternity test supervised by the court.
Victor’s lawyer objected.
That was the mistake.
The judge looked over her glasses.
“You asked the court to question paternity. Now you oppose the test?”
Counsel backtracked.
Mia watched Adrian write two words on a legal pad and slide it to Matteo.
He’s afraid.
After the hearing, Mia asked, “Of what?”
Adrian answered, “The test creates a clean record he can’t manipulate.”
The court-supervised test was conducted that afternoon.
Adrian swabbed his cheek while Ronan protested his own swab with theatrical betrayal.
“You said doctor done!”
“I know,” Mia said. “This is different.”
“Bad stick.”
“It’s a cotton swab.”
“Bad cotton.”
Adrian crouched beside him.
“I’ll do mine again if you do yours.”
Ronan narrowed his eyes. “Two times?”
“Two times.”
Ronan agreed.
Wren demanded a swab too, though none was required.
“No one leaves me out,” her expression seemed to say.
By evening, preliminary results confirmed paternity again.
Victor’s challenge weakened.
Then the ledger produced a second opportunity.
Several payments Victor had stolen flowed through a company still active.
Mia recognized the name.
“Northbridge Hospitality.”
Adrian looked up. “What about it?”
“They managed temporary staffing for the Kensington.”
Matteo searched.
The gala shift where Adrian found Mia had been assigned through Northbridge.
Mia’s stomach turned.
“My manager called me in last minute.”
“What time?”
“Four thirty.”
“Who requested you?”
“I don’t know.”
Matteo obtained the staffing logs.
A note beside Mia’s employee number read: PRIORITY ASSIGNMENT—MEZZANINE SERVICE ELIGIBLE.
The request came from a Northbridge executive account linked to Victor.
Mia looked at Adrian.
“He put me in that ballroom.”
“Yes.”
“He wanted you to find me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrian leaned back.
“To trigger the trust publicly.”
Matteo nodded. “If Adrian discovered the twins and acknowledged them, Victor could challenge immediately, force records into litigation, and learn whether Luca’s ledger still existed.”
Mia felt rage sharpen into clarity.
“Then the photograph at the hospital, the messages, the kidnapping—they were pressure.”
“Designed to make us search faster,” Adrian said.
“And reveal where we searched.”
Matteo grimaced. “The listening device.”
Victor had manipulated them into uncovering the evidence for him.
Mia stood.
“We stop following his path.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What do you suggest?”
“We give him the ledger.”
Matteo stared. “Absolutely not.”
“A copy.”
“He’ll know.”
“Then make it imperfect.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed with interest.
Mia continued. “We create one false payment trail that leads to a place we control. If Victor is desperate enough, he goes there himself or sends someone he trusts.”
Matteo looked skeptical.
“And if he checks the bank records?”
“Then the false trail cannot be financial.”
Adrian understood first.
“A storage reference.”
Mia nodded. “A notation in Luca’s handwriting style suggesting the original evidence was moved.”
Her attorney, listening nearby, raised a finger.
“Before anyone commits forgery, no.”
Mia exhaled.
“Fine. A decoy note that is clearly not introduced as real evidence.”
“Better.”
Adrian looked at her with something dangerously close to admiration.
“You’re enjoying this.”
“I’m enjoying him not being the smartest person in the room.”
Adrian smiled fully for the first time.
Mia hated how much she remembered that smile.

\nThat night, after the hearing, Mia sat on the bathroom floor while the twins splashed in the tub. Adrian waited in the doorway because she had not invited him farther.\n\nRonan held up a plastic boat. “Daddy boat?”\n\nThe word slipped out accidentally.\n\nEveryone froze.\n\nRonan frowned, unaware of the explosion he had caused. “Boat.”\n\nAdrian crouched. “Boat.”\n\nHe did not claim the other word.\n\nMia noticed.\n\nWren poured a cup of water over Ronan’s shoulder and chaos resumed.\n\nLater Mia said, “You heard him.”\n\n“Yes.”\n\n“You didn’t react.”\n\n“He gets to decide what he calls me when he understands what it means.”\n\nMia looked at him for a long moment. “That was the right answer.”\n\n“I’m writing down the date.”\n\nShe laughed despite herself.\n
The judge’s written order arrived before midnight. Mia read every line herself. Adrian did not ask for a copy until she finished. That tiny courtesy mattered more than the expensive legal team waiting downstairs. She forwarded it to him without comment. He replied with two words: Thank you.
