Chapter 18 - The Trusted Man

Mia did not tell Adrian over the phone.

She returned to Dot’s townhouse and asked Matteo to sit down.

Adrian noticed immediately.

“What happened?”

“Elena says Victor has someone close to you.”

Adrian’s expression did not change.

“Who?”

“She didn’t know the name. She heard Victor call him ‘the loyal dog.’”

Matteo looked offended on principle.

“Subtle.”

Mia watched him.

He noticed.

“You think it’s me.”

“I think it has to be someone Adrian trusts.”

Matteo stood.

“Then check me.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Matteo.”

“No. She’s right. Check everyone.”

They did.

Phones, accounts, access logs, travel records.

Matteo came back clean.

So did most of the inner team.

One man did not.

Graham Holt, Adrian’s personal driver.

The same man who drove Mia and the feverish twins to the hospital the night Adrian found them.

Mia felt sick.

“He was in the car.”

Adrian’s face went blank.

“He’s been with me nine years.”

Bank records showed payments to Graham’s brother through a Victor-linked company. Access logs showed Graham opening Adrian’s schedule repeatedly outside work hours.

Matteo whispered, “He knew about the Kensington.”

Mia closed her eyes.

“And the hospital.”

Adrian stood.

“Where is he?”

“Off duty. Apartment in Queens.”

Police moved before Adrian could.

Graham was arrested trying to leave with cash and a passport.

He asked to speak with Adrian.

Adrian refused.

Mia looked surprised.

“You don’t want to know why?”

“No.”

“That’s unlike you.”

“I know why. Money, fear, resentment, some story he told himself. The reason does not change what he did.”

Mia studied him.

“That sounded healthy.”

“Don’t spread it around.”

Graham cooperated with investigators instead.

His statement revealed Victor’s final plan.

Victor believed the original ledger and trust documents were stored at Dot’s townhouse after the bank visit. He planned to enter during a staged power outage, steal the documents, then leave the country.

The problem was simple.

The originals were not there.

The opportunity was better.

Mia looked at Adrian.

“We let him come.”

Adrian’s immediate answer was “No.”

Mia waited.

He rubbed his face.

“Fine. Explain.”

“We evacuate Dot and the twins. Police control the house. We leave a believable copy packet in the study.”

“You are not staying inside.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

He blinked.

“Growth,” she said.

“I hate when you use my own arguments.”

The plan was approved by investigators.

Dot took the twins to a protected hotel under police guard. Sofia went with them. Salvatore, after protesting, was told firmly he was not operationally useful.

“Cruel,” he said.

“Accurate,” Mia replied.

At nine seventeen that night, the power on Dot’s block went out.

Not by accident.

A figure entered through the rear basement door.

Victor Dane was older than Mia expected, thin and almost elegant in a dark coat.

He moved directly to the study.

He knew the layout.

Cameras captured him opening the decoy packet.

Then he stopped.

On top was a handwritten note from Mia.

You keep treating children like clauses. That is why you lose.

Victor smiled.

Then he looked directly at the hidden camera.

“Mia,” he said, knowing she would eventually see the footage. “You still think this is about money.”

He reached into his coat.

Police entered.

Victor did not draw a weapon.

He held a small voice recorder.

“I have Luca Castellano’s confession,” he said.

Adrian, listening from the command vehicle, went still.

Victor smiled as officers surrounded him.

“The trust was built on a lie.”

\nBefore the operation at Dot’s house, Adrian packed the twins’ overnight bag himself. Mia checked it and found four shirts, six pairs of socks, no pajamas, and three flashlights.\n\nShe held up the bag. “Explain.”\n\n“Preparedness.”\n\n“For what, a toddler expedition?”\n\n“I panicked.”\n\nMia laughed. “You packed tactical flashlights and forgot pajamas.”\n\nHe looked genuinely embarrassed. “I can run a company.”\n\n“Children are unimpressed by market capitalization.”\n\nHe repacked the bag under her supervision. The ridiculous task steadied them both before the night’s danger.\n\nAt the hotel, Ronan hugged Adrian’s leg. “Come back.”\n\nAdrian looked at Mia before answering.\n\n“I will do everything I can.”\n\nNot a promise he could not guarantee. Not a lie designed to comfort.\n\nMia noticed that too.\n

Matteo later admitted he had checked his own financial records before anyone asked. “If I was compromised, I wanted to know first,” he said. Adrian replied, “That is either admirable or deeply paranoid.” Mia answered, “In this family, those categories overlap.” For the first time that day, all three laughed.

The operation briefing ended with one final instruction from Mia: nobody would improvise around the twins. Their hotel location would remain compartmentalized even from most of Adrian’s staff. Adrian agreed without argument. After Graham, trust would no longer be assumed merely because history made someone familiar.
