Chapter 5 - The Dead Man Who Gave the Order

Luca did not react.
Not at first.
Then he looked at Caterina.
“Is he?”
She said nothing.
That was enough.
Emma watched something inside Luca close.
Not break.
Close.
The difference mattered.
“Where is Vittorio?”
Caterina looked at Antonio.
“Ask him.”
Antonio shook his head.
“I haven’t seen Vittorio in years.”
“Lie.”
Caterina stepped toward him.
“You took orders from him after I disappeared.”
“For a while.”
“How long?”
Antonio smiled.
“Long enough.”
Luca’s voice cut through them.
“Stop.”
Both did.
He looked at his mother.
“Why did you fake your death?”
Caterina answered.
“Because Vittorio discovered someone was laundering family money through charities and hospital networks.”
“Antonio?”
“Yes.”
“And Belini’s father?”
“Yes.”
Belini closed her eyes.
Luca continued.
“Why fake your death?”
“Because I found the proof.”
“And?”
“Your father believed the safest place for me was nowhere.”
Luca laughed once.
No humor.
“So he buried you.”
“He buried an empty coffin.”
“For fourteen years.”
“Yes.”
“And never told me.”
“No.”
Luca looked toward Lily.
A child erased on paper.
A mother erased from life.
A family that kept solving danger by deleting people.
He understood why he hated it.
Marco interrupted.
“Boss.”
He had been studying the memory card.
“There’s an encrypted folder.”
“Open it.”
“It has a name.”
“What name?”
Marco turned the screen.
V.M.
Vittorio Moretti.
Caterina went still.
Antonio looked surprised.
Belini did not.
Luca saw that.
“You’ve seen it.”
Belini looked at him.
“Yes.”
“What is inside?”
“I couldn’t open it.”
“But you tried.”
“Yes.”
Marco entered a code.
Wrong.
Caterina approached.
“Use Lily’s birthday.”
Emma stared.
“How do you know?”
Caterina looked at her granddaughter.
“Because Vittorio knew.”
The folder opened.
One audio file.
No video.
A man’s voice.
Older.
Controlled.
Unmistakably Moretti.
Luca had not heard it in twelve years.
His father.
“If this file is open, then Antonio has moved too early.”
Nobody breathed.
Vittorio continued.
“Luca, your mother was right not to trust me.”
Caterina closed her eyes.
“I chose the organization over my family more than once.”
Luca stared at the speaker.
“Do not make the same mistake.”
A pause.
“Lily is your daughter. I confirmed it the night she was born.”
Emma covered her mouth.
Belini looked away.
“And Belini did not create the false death record alone.”
Luca turned slowly.
The recording continued.
“I ordered it.”
Silence.
Emma whispered:
“What?”
Vittorio’s voice remained calm.
“I believed Antonio would kill the child if he knew she lived.”
Luca’s hands tightened.
“So I erased her first.”
The audio ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Emma slapped the tablet off the table.
It shattered against the floor.
Luca did not stop her.
Caterina did not either.
Emma was crying now.
“All of you.”
She looked at Caterina.
“At him.”
Then at Belini.
“You all decided my daughter was safer if I lived inside a lie.”
Nobody had an answer.
Lily walked to Emma.
Emma picked her up.
Luca looked at them.
Then at Caterina.
“Where is my father?”
May you like
Caterina answered this time.
“Closer than you think.”
