THE DAUGHTER THEY ERASED / Chapter 7 / 9

Chapter 8 - The Brother Luca Never Knew

His name was Gabriel Moretti.

Vittorio’s son.

Luca’s half brother.

Thirty-two.

Born from an affair nobody in the family knew about.

Nobody except Antonio.

And Caterina.

Luca stared at his mother.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Thirty-two years.”

The answer hurt more than he expected.

Vittorio sat.

For the first time since arriving, he looked ashamed.

Gabriel’s mother had died when he was twelve.

Antonio took the boy in.

Not out of kindness.

Because a hidden Moretti son was useful.

Vittorio paid for schools.

Homes.

Protection.

Always at a distance.

Caterina knew.

She hated it.

But by then the family was already divided by secrets.

Luca asked:

“Where is Gabriel now?”

Antonio answered.

“Running the company you call legitimate.”

Marco frowned.

“What company?”

“Moretti Private Security.”

The room changed.

Luca looked at Marco.

Marco went pale.

“The regional director.”

“Gabriel Vale,” Antonio said.

Marco swore.

Luca knew him.

Not well.

A quiet executive in Boston.

Competent.

Polite.

Never ambitious.

Exactly the kind of man nobody watched closely.

Antonio continued.

“Gabriel wanted what Luca had.”

Vittorio snapped:

“No.”

Antonio smiled.

“You still don’t know him.”

Then the foyer doors opened.

A man entered.

Tall.

Dark hair.

Gray suit.

No weapon visible.

Gabriel.

Marco’s men surrounded him.

He raised both hands.

“I came to surrender.”

Luca stared.

“You picked an interesting morning.”

Gabriel looked at Vittorio.

Then Caterina.

Then Luca.

“I am not working with Antonio.”

Antonio laughed.

Gabriel ignored him.

“I was.”

Luca waited.

“For how long?”

“Eight years.”

“Why stop?”

Gabriel looked toward Lily.

“Because of her.”

Emma pulled the child closer.

Gabriel noticed.

“I never touched her.”

“Good answer.”

“It is also true.”

Gabriel explained.

Antonio had promised him a share of Moretti control.

Not the whole family.

A seat.

Recognition.

A name he had never been allowed to use.

Gabriel helped hide transfers.

Security access.

Vehicles.

Then he learned Antonio planned to take Lily.

Not kill her.

Raise her under another identity until her trust matured.

Gabriel refused.

He began feeding information to Caterina.

Caterina looked at him.

“That was you?”

“Yes.”

Antonio’s face changed.

Now everyone understood.

The anonymous tips.

The clinic trail.

The old codes.

The reason Caterina found Lily before Antonio did.

Gabriel had been helping her from inside.

Luca asked:

“Why not come to me?”

Gabriel laughed once.

“Because I was told my entire life that you would kill me if you knew who I was.”

Luca looked at Vittorio.

Another inherited lie.

Vittorio said nothing.

Gabriel continued.

“I came because Antonio’s last plan is already moving.”

Marco stepped forward.

“What plan?”

Gabriel looked at the dining hall doors.

“By noon, every Moretti account will be frozen.”

Vittorio stood.

“Impossible.”

“No.”

Gabriel looked at Luca.

“Antonio sent evidence to federal investigators three days ago.”

Antonio smiled.

Luca understood immediately.

“If I die or disappear, the family collapses.”

“Yes.”

“If I survive, the evidence still burns everything.”

“Yes.”

Antonio leaned back.

“Finally.”

Luca looked at him.

Antonio’s smile widened.

“You were never the target.”

May you like

“Then what was?”

“The name.”
