Chapter 8 - The Archive Beneath the Estate

The entrance was behind the wine cellar.

A steel door.

No handle.

Only seventeen numbered key slots.

Albert pointed.

“Dominic liked redundancy.”

Julian inserted Claire’s key into slot seventeen.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a narrow archive.

Boxes.

Ledgers.

Tapes.

Photographs.

Thirty years of secrets.

Sophia stood beside Julian.

Anthony entered slowly.

Michael and Evelyn remained upstairs.

Julian opened the first box.

Russo shipping manifests.

Bribe payments.

Bell accounts.

The second:

Hospital records.

Birth records.

Adoption files.

The third:

Claire Russo.

Julian stopped.

He opened it.

Letters.

Photographs.

A passport.

Four tickets to Switzerland.

Names:

Robert Russo.

Claire Russo.

Julian Russo.

Rachel Russo.

Julian stared.

Robert really had planned to take them all.

Anthony saw the tickets.

His face changed.

“He was going to raise both of them.”

Albert nodded.

Julian looked at Anthony.

“And you?”

Anthony gave a bitter smile.

“I was apparently not invited.”

Then Albert found another letter.

Addressed to Anthony.

Written by Robert.

Never sent.

Anthony opened it.

Read silently.

Then sat down.

Julian watched him.

“What does it say?”

Anthony handed it over.

Robert had written:

Anthony,

I stole years from you.

There is no apology large enough.

Claire loves you.

Julian is yours by blood.

But he is also my son by every promise I made after he was born.

I will not ask you to disappear again.

If we survive Dominic, Julian will know everything.

If he chooses you, I will accept it.

If he chooses me, you must accept that too.

Rachel deserves both of us to stop behaving like ownership makes us fathers.

Julian stopped reading.

Anthony looked away.

For the first time, neither man had to defend himself against Robert.

The letter had done it.

Sophia whispered:

“He was trying to fix it.”

Julian nodded.

“Too late.”

Albert searched another file.

Then froze.

“Julian.”

He held up one sealed envelope.

DOMINIC RUSSO — FINAL TRUST.

Julian opened it.

The document described ownership of multiple companies.

Bell Financial.

Russo Maritime.

Three holding corporations.

A clause stated that Julian and Rachel were equal beneficiaries.

Not Julian alone.

Julian stared.

“Rachel owns half.”

Albert nodded.

Sophia frowned.

“Then why was she hidden?”

Anthony answered:

“Because keeping her legally dead made Julian sole visible heir.”

Julian looked at the document.

“And who controlled my assets until I was twenty-five?”

Albert’s face darkened.

“Robert.”

Julian shook his head.

“After Robert died?”

Albert checked the document.

Then looked up.

“Michael Bell.”

Silence.

Sophia whispered:

“No.”

Julian understood.

Michael had not simply hidden Rachel to avoid scandal.

He had controlled money that belonged to her.

Millions.

Maybe more.

Anthony’s face hardened.

Julian turned toward the stairs.

At that moment, every light in the archive went out.

Sophia gasped.

A door slammed.

Then Michael Bell’s voice came through the darkness.

“I’m sorry.”
