Chapter 9 - The Family That Chose Money

Emergency lights flickered on.

Dim red.

Michael stood in the doorway.

A gun in his hand.

Evelyn behind him.

Crying.

Sophia stared.

“Dad.”

Michael’s face twisted.

“I never wanted it to reach this point.”

Julian laughed.

“That sentence should be engraved on both families’ graves.”

Michael looked at the trust.

“Give me the document.”

“No.”

“Julian.”

“No.”

Michael raised the gun slightly.

Anthony stepped in front of Julian.

Michael shouted:

“Move.”

Anthony didn’t.

“For thirty-four years?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

Michael’s hand trembled.

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

“Stop.”

He pulled away.

“You think prison fixes anything?”

Sophia stared at him.

“It fixes one thing.”

Michael looked at her.

“You stop deciding for everyone.”

Silence.

Julian held the trust.

“You stole Rachel’s inheritance.”

Michael said nothing.

“You paid for the clinic with her own money.”

Still nothing.

Anthony’s face filled with disgust.

Julian continued.

“You called it protection.”

Michael whispered:

“I was trying to keep the company alive.”

Julian looked around the archive.

“All this.”

“The lies.”

“The forged records.”

“My mother.”

“My sister.”

“Anthony.”

“Robert.”

“For a company?”

Michael shouted:

“For hundreds of families who depended on it!”

Julian’s voice remained calm.

“No.”

“For control.”

Michael’s face changed.

Julian stepped closer.

“You could have told me when I turned eighteen.”

“You could have told Rachel.”

“You could have returned the money.”

“You could have told Sophia.”

“You chose not to.”

Michael lowered the gun slightly.

Sophia moved.

Fast.

She grabbed his wrist.

Anthony struck the weapon away.

It slid across the floor.

Albert kicked it behind a cabinet.

Michael did not fight.

He simply stood there.

Defeated.

Evelyn covered her face.

Julian looked at Sophia.

She was shaking.

“You all right?”

She nodded.

Then looked at her father.

“I loved him before I knew what he was.”

Julian understood exactly what she meant.

Robert.

Michael.

Anthony.

Parents were not one thing.

Neither were children.

Police arrived twelve minutes later.

Julian had called them before entering the archive.

Michael was arrested.

Evelyn surrendered.

Albert turned over the records.

Anthony gave a statement.

Sophia stood alone in the ballroom.

The champagne tower had been cleared away.

The musicians were gone.

The engagement banner still hung above the staircase.

Julian approached.

She looked at the ring on her hand.

“I lied to you.”

“Yes.”

“I stopped Anthony from meeting you.”

“Yes.”

“I knew there was a woman at Silver Pines.”

“Yes.”

She swallowed.

“I didn’t know who Rachel was.”

“I believe you.”

Sophia looked at him.

“Do you still love me?”

Julian’s face softened.

“Yes.”

She began crying.

“But?”

Julian looked at the ring.

“But love is not enough to decide tonight.”

Sophia nodded.

He continued.

“For once, nobody is going to turn a family crisis into a marriage contract.”

She removed the ring.

Not dramatically.

Carefully.

Then placed it in his hand.

“What happens now?”

Julian looked toward the windows.

May you like

Dawn had started.

“Now Rachel gets her name back.”
