Chapter 8 - Belini Brought the Original Recording

Belini returned one week later.
Deep-red wool coat.
No diamonds.
No engagement ring.
Emma nearly refused to let her inside.
Belini held up an old audio drive.
“This is the original.”
Luca arrived ten minutes later.
They played it in the townhouse study.
Six-year-old audio filled the room.
Luca’s younger voice:
“Do whatever is necessary. I can’t let this interfere with the family.”
Then the missing sentence.
“The warehouse investigation has to end before innocent employees lose everything.”
Emma closed her eyes.
The meaning was obvious.
Nothing about her.
Nothing about pregnancy.
Nothing about leaving.
Belini stared at the floor.
“My father kept the original.”
“Why?” Luca asked.
“Insurance against Vittorio.”
Marco, listening remotely, began recording the statement.
Belini continued.
“Vittorio asked my father to provide the editor. He wanted one line clean enough to sound personal.”
Emma’s stomach turned.
“Did your father know why?”
“Yes.”
“And you?”
“I knew only what Vittorio told me that morning.”
Emma looked at her.
“You still used it.”
“Yes.”
Belini did not ask forgiveness.
That made Emma listen.
“He told me you were threatening to expose Luca unless he married you.”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“And you believed him.”
“I wanted to.”
The honesty was ugly.
But useful.
Belini looked at Luca.
“I wanted the alliance. I wanted the life. Later I wanted you.”
She swallowed.
“And when I learned Emma had never threatened anyone, telling you would have cost me everything.”
Luca’s voice remained level.
“So you protected the lie.”
“Yes.”
Emma asked:
“Why bring this now?”
Belini looked at her.
“Because the boys deserve one true recording after six years of a false one.”
She placed another folder on the desk.
Vescari correspondence.
Vittorio’s instructions.
Proof of payment to the audio editor.
Enough to destroy any claim that Emma willingly disappeared.
Luca looked at Belini.
“This helps the prosecutors.”
“I know.”
“It hurts your family.”
“I know.”
“You could go to prison.”
Belini’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
Emma studied her.
For the first time, Belini was doing something that made her own life worse without forcing someone else to pay for it.
Not redemption.
Not yet.
But choice.
After she left, Luca found a handwritten note tucked into the file.
Not from Belini.
From Vittorio.
Dated six years ago.
IF LUCA DISCOVERS THE CHILDREN, TELL HIM THEY ARE NOT ALL HIS.
Luca stared at it.
Emma stood beside him.
“That was always the backup plan.”
“Yes.”
“So the call wasn’t panic.”
“No.”
May you like
Luca folded the note.
“It was prepared before they were born.”
