Chapter 9 - Vittorio Told Luca What He Was Really Afraid Of

Vittorio requested one meeting.

Luca agreed.

Not at the estate.

Not at Bellori’s.

At an old Moretti warehouse overlooking the river.

Empty.

Neutral.

Emma came because Vittorio had lied to her too.

Marco stayed outside.

Vittorio looked at both of them.

“I was wrong.”

Luca said nothing.

Emma did.

“That is smaller than what you did.”

“Yes.”

Vittorio nodded.

“I know.”

This time the phrase sounded different.

He sat.

“My father died because of succession.”

Luca had heard the story.

Family conflict.

Ambush.

Three men dead.

But Vittorio told the part Luca had never known.

Two brothers had fought over who would inherit control.

Their children became leverage.

Families became targets.

“When I learned Emma carried four boys, I saw four future claimants before I saw four children.”

Emma’s face hardened.

“That is your failure.”

“Yes.”

Vittorio looked at Luca.

“And I thought if you chose her, every rival would know where to hurt you.”

“So you hurt me first.”

Vittorio closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Luca’s anger did not disappear.

But the shape of it changed.

Fear had built the conspiracy.

Not hatred.

Not greed alone.

Fear.

Then Vittorio admitted the final truth.

“I planned to tell you when they were older.”

Emma stared.

“When?”

“After the Vescari alliance was permanent.”

Luca understood.

“After I married Belini.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

“I would have brought the boys into the family gradually.”

Emma stood.

“You would have introduced their father like a business acquisition.”

Vittorio lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Luca looked toward the river.

“Why did you tell me only three shared my blood type?”

“To create doubt.”

“You knew all four were mine.”

“Yes.”

“You had DNA results.”

“Yes.”

“And you still tried to make me look at Emma as a liar.”

Vittorio’s voice weakened.

“I thought doubt would slow you long enough for me to explain.”

“You had six years.”

Silence.

That ended it.

Vittorio removed the Moretti signet ring.

He placed it on the table.

The same ring visible in the gate photograph.

“I am resigning every position Marco listed.”

Luca looked at it.

“I already removed you.”

“I know.”

“This doesn’t fix anything.”

“I know.”

Vittorio stood.

Then looked at Emma.

“I cannot give back what I took.”

“No.”

“I can stop taking.”

Emma held his gaze.

“That is where you start.”

Vittorio nodded.

Before leaving, he paused beside Luca.

“They look like you.”

Luca’s expression tightened.

“You don’t know them.”

Vittorio accepted the blow.

“No.”

Then he left.

May you like

Luca looked at the ring on the table.

He did not pick it up.
