Chapter 6 - The Safe-Deposit Box Held More Than Share Records

The bank opened a private vault at 12:17 a.m.

New Year’s Day.

Not because banks usually did that.

Because the manager owed Lorenzo DeLuca a favor.

Marco noticed.

“You still have favors.”

Lorenzo answered:

“I still have sins too.”

Marco did not ask.

Not yet.

The box was long.

Heavy.

Marco used the key hidden beneath the jacket collar.

Inside were original share certificates.

Elena DeLuca.

Forty percent.

Original board minutes.

Original signatures.

No Adrian transfer.

No emergency assignment.

Nothing.

Vivienne exhaled.

“The merger is dead.”

Marco looked at the clock.

“Not just dead.”

“It never existed legally.”

Lorenzo nodded.

Then Marco found another envelope.

For Marco.

His mother’s handwriting.

He opened it.

Son,

If you are reading this, then either I found the courage to tell you everything or I failed and someone else finished what I started.

Marco stopped.

Lorenzo looked away.

Marco continued.

I need you to know that your father is not innocent.

Silence.

Vivienne looked at Lorenzo.

Marco read on.

Before Lorenzo disappeared, he helped Adrian move money through companies that were supposed to be legitimate.

Marco stared at his father.

Lorenzo nodded once.

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Millions.”

“For how long?”

“Seven years.”

Marco’s expression hardened.

“You worked with him.”

“Yes.”

“You helped build the system.”

“Yes.”

“And then wanted out.”

“Yes.”

Marco returned to the letter.

Your father began copying records because he knew Adrian would never allow him to walk away clean.

Marco looked up.

“So the evidence was also leverage.”

“Yes.”

“Not just justice.”

“No.”

Lorenzo looked ashamed.

Marco read:

He told me he was collecting proof for you.

I told him that was only partly true.

Part of him was protecting us.

Part of him was protecting himself.

Marco folded the page slowly.

Lorenzo said:

“She was right.”

Vivienne watched him.

Marco asked:

“If Adrian had never threatened me, would you have exposed him?”

Lorenzo hesitated.

That hesitation answered first.

“I don’t know.”

Marco looked away.

Lorenzo continued.

“I wanted to believe I was becoming better.”

“Were you?”

“Eventually.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No.”

Lorenzo breathed slowly.

“I became afraid before I became brave.”

Marco looked at him.

“That sounds familiar.”

“Yes.”

The letter continued.

Marco read:

If your father returns to you, do not let him turn fear into heroism.

He left.

I helped him leave.

We both believed we were saving you.

Maybe we were.

Maybe we also made the easier choice for ourselves.

Marco stopped.

His eyes filled.

Vivienne wiped hers.

Lorenzo whispered:

“She never lied well.”

Marco almost smiled.

Then the last paragraph.

Robert Russo knows what happened to me.

He may tell you Adrian forced him.

Adrian did pressure him.

But Robert made his own choice.

Do not let one guilty man hide behind another.

Vivienne went pale.

Marco folded the letter.

Then found another item.

A small digital recorder.

Label:

IF ELENA DOES NOT COME BACK.

Lorenzo stared.

“I’ve never seen that.”

Marco pressed play.

Elena’s voice.

Calm.

“Robert, if you are hearing this, then you followed me like I expected.”

Vivienne covered her mouth.

Elena continued.

“I know you disabled my car.”

Silence.

Marco froze.

Robert had done it before the crash.

And Elena knew.

Her voice continued.

“I had Joseph repair it.”

Lorenzo whispered:

“What?”

Marco stared at the recorder.

Elena said:

“So if something happens tonight, it will not be because of the brake line you paid to cut.”

Vivienne’s face changed.

Marco looked at her.

The recording continued.

“I am going to meet Lorenzo.”

“I am taking a different car.”

Silence.

Then:

“If I die, look somewhere else.”

Nobody moved.

Marco whispered:

“Then Robert didn’t cause the crash.”

Lorenzo stared.

“No.”

Vivienne almost collapsed with relief.

Then fear returned.

“Then who did?”

Marco looked inside the box.

One final envelope.

Police report.

Photographs.

A road.

A crushed car.

And another vehicle behind it.

License plate visible.

Registered to DeLuca Security.

Lorenzo whispered:

“Adrian.”

Marco stared.

The recorder clicked again.

Elena’s final words:

“And if Adrian tells you Robert killed me, remember this.”

“I already knew Robert tried.”

“I survived that.”

A pause.

“The man I am afraid of is the one who will make Robert useful after I’m gone.”

The recording ended.

Marco looked at Vivienne.

“Your father tried to scare my mother.”

“Yes.”

“Adrian finished it.”

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Lorenzo’s face broke.

For fifteen years, even he had not known the full truth.

Marco put the recorder in his pocket.

Then the original shares.

Then his mother’s letter.

Vivienne whispered:

“What now?”

Marco looked at Lorenzo.

“Now my father tells me everything he helped Adrian do.”

Lorenzo nodded.

“And after that?”

May you like

Marco looked toward the vault door.

“Then I decide which parts of this family deserve to survive.”
