Chapter 9 - Marco Refused to Inherit the Family the Way Adrian Designed It

Adrian was arrested before sunrise.
Not for Elena’s death.
Not yet.
For fraud.
Conspiracy.
Blackmail.
Evidence destruction.
Financial crimes.
The rest would come later.
Maybe.
Marco learned something that night.
Truth did not always arrive as one perfect charge.
Sometimes it arrived as enough smaller truths that the lie could no longer stand.
Lorenzo gave investigators everything.
His own crimes too.
Hidden transfers.
False companies.
Payments.
Names.
He did not ask Marco to protect him.
That mattered.
Matteo did the same.
He had spent years moving through Adrian’s Naples network.
Not because he loved it.
Because he believed staying close was the only way to survive.
Marco looked at him across the kitchen table.
“You worked for him too.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Eleven years.”
“You hurt people?”
Matteo looked down.
“Yes.”
Marco waited.
Matteo continued.
“Not the way he wanted.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No.”
He looked up.
“I collected debts.”
“Threatened people.”
“Yes.”
“Hit people?”
“Yes.”
“Kill anyone?”
“No.”
Marco nodded slowly.
Not forgiveness.
Information.
Lorenzo sat at the other end of the table.
Two sons.
Both shaped by the same man.
One openly.
One in secret.
Marco looked at his father.
“You made Adrian bigger every time you ran from him.”
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Do you understand that?”
“Yes.”
Marco looked at Matteo.
“And you made him bigger every time you obeyed.”
Matteo nodded.
“Yes.”
Then Marco looked at himself.
“And I made him bigger every time I signed something without asking why.”
Silence.
Vivienne stood in the doorway.
He looked at her.
“And you?”
She swallowed.
“I made him bigger every time I let my father’s fear become mine.”
Marco nodded.
No one escaped clean.
That helped.
Not because guilt was comforting.
Because honesty was.
Later that morning, Marco’s lawyer arrived with the original share records.
“Elena’s forty percent transfers to you.”
Marco shook his head.
“Not automatically.”
The lawyer frowned.
“It does under the estate.”
Marco looked at Lorenzo.
Then Matteo.
“My mother knew Matteo existed.”
“Yes,” Lorenzo said.
“She considered him family?”
“Yes.”
Marco thought.
Then:
“Reopen the estate.”
The lawyer stared.
“Why?”
“I want the ownership reviewed.”
Lorenzo stood.
“No.”
Marco looked at him.
Lorenzo continued.
“Your mother’s shares were hers.”
“Yes.”
“She left them to you.”
“Yes.”
“Matteo is my son, not hers.”
Matteo nodded.
“I don’t want them.”
Marco looked at both.
“I didn’t say I’m giving them away.”
“What are you saying?” Vivienne asked.
Marco looked at the unsigned merger agreement.
“I’m saying I’m done inheriting decisions made by dead people and criminals.”
Silence.
He continued.
“DeLuca Holdings gets restructured.”
The lawyer frowned.
“How?”
“No emergency trustees.”
“No family-only board.”
“No hidden voting agreements.”
Lorenzo almost smiled.
“Your grandfather would have hated that.”
“Good.”
Matteo laughed.
Marco looked at Vivienne.
“And no Russo merger.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
“That part is over.”
Her eyes filled.
“I know.”
Marco looked at her.
“Us?”
She waited.
“I don’t know.”
She nodded.
“That’s fair.”
He continued.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“But you hid my father for eight months.”
“Yes.”
“And helped delay truth because you were afraid of your father.”
“Yes.”
“I can understand that.”
She looked hopeful.
Marco continued.
“Understanding is not the same as trusting.”
Her eyes lowered.
“I know.”
He looked at the ring she wore.
Not an engagement ring.
Just hers.
He had planned to propose after the New Year’s Ball.
But this time nobody was going to schedule truth around a proposal.
Vivienne whispered:
“What happens now?”
Marco looked at Lorenzo.
Then Matteo.
Then the old jacket lying across a chair.
“Now I stop signing things at midnight.”
Matteo smiled.
“That is a surprisingly good family policy.”
Marco almost laughed.
Then Joseph arrived.
The old tailor held a garment bag.
Marco stared.
“What now?”
Joseph smiled.
“The jacket your father made for you.”
“I wore it.”
“No.”
Joseph shook his head.
“That was the fitting version.”
Lorenzo looked confused.
Joseph continued.
“The finished one has something in the lining.”
Marco sighed.
“Of course it does.”
Joseph handed it over.
Marco opened the inner pocket.
A note.
Elena’s handwriting.
Three words.
CHOOSE YOURSELF, SON.
Marco stared.
May you like
Then smiled.
For real this time.
