Chapter 6 - Victor Morel Admitted Why He Watched Adrian for Years

Adrian stood inches from Victor.
“You sent the photographs.”
“Yes.”
“After Camille’s father died.”
“Yes.”
“For three years.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You kept me away from my son.”
Victor looked at her.
“I kept him alive.”
Adrian laughed.
Again.
That sentence.
Always that sentence.
He stepped back.
“Explain.”
Victor looked tired.
“For once, I will.”
He sat down.
Lawrence watched him carefully.
Victor pointed at the ledger.
“Your father wanted to confess.”
“He planned to turn over everything.”
“Lawrence wanted him dead.”
“I argued against it.”
Adrian stared.
“You still helped.”
“Yes.”
“I thought if I cooperated, Lawrence would leave you alone.”
Evelyn whispered:
“He never leaves anyone alone.”
Victor nodded.
“I learned that.”
Adrian asked:
“After my father died?”
“Yes.”
“What did you do?”
“I took control of Morel Holdings.”
“You raised me.”
“Yes.”
“You kept Mother away.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victor looked at Lawrence.
“Because as long as she stayed gone, Lawrence believed the evidence was gone too.”
Adrian frowned.
“He did not know about the ledger?”
“Not where it was.”
Evelyn said:
“He thought I had it.”
Victor nodded.
“So every photograph was proof Adrian was alive.”
Evelyn stared.
“A threat.”
“Yes.”
“And protection?”
Victor looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Adrian said:
“You could have told me.”
“At fourteen?”
“At twenty.”
Victor said nothing.
“At twenty-five.”
Nothing.
“At thirty.”
Victor looked down.
Adrian’s voice hardened.
“You stopped protecting me years ago.”
Silence.
“You started protecting yourself.”
Victor nodded.
“Yes.”
That answer surprised Adrian.
Victor continued.
“I was afraid if you knew, you would ask what I had done.”
“And now I know.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at Lawrence.
The old judge stood.
“We are finished.”
Robert blocked the door.
Lawrence smiled.
“You think an old hotel manager stops me?”
Robert took out his phone.
“No.”
Police sirens sounded below.
Lawrence’s smile disappeared.
Adrian looked at Robert.
“You called them.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“When Helena said murder.”
Camille stared at her mother.
Helena nodded.
“I told Robert to.”
Lawrence looked at his daughter.
“You would send your father to prison.”
Helena’s voice shook.
“You sent my husband to a grave.”
Silence.
Police entered the hallway.
Lawrence looked at Adrian.
“You think this is justice?”
Adrian answered:
“No.”
“It is evidence.”
Lawrence’s expression hardened.
Officers entered.
Victor did not resist.
Lawrence did.
Only with words.
He demanded names.
Warrants.
Jurisdiction.
The habits of a judge who had spent a lifetime controlling rooms.
Nobody listened.
As they took him away.
Lawrence looked at Camille.
“Your father was weak.”
Camille stepped forward.
“My father may have been guilty.”
A breath.
“But you murdered him.”
Lawrence smiled coldly.
“And you still carry his name.”
Camille did not flinch.
“Yes.”
“Names do not decide what we become.”
Adrian looked at her.
She looked back.
Then Victor stopped beside Adrian.
Handcuffed.
He whispered:
“There is one thing your mother does not know.”
Evelyn stared.
Adrian’s face hardened.
“What?”
Victor looked toward Room 317.
“Your father came here the night she disappeared.”
Evelyn froze.
“No.”
Victor nodded.
“He found the room after she left.”
Adrian stared.
“And?”
Victor’s voice dropped.
“He found the first ledger.”
Silence.
Evelyn whispered:
“That is impossible.”
Victor looked at Adrian.
“Ask Robert who gave it back.”
May you like
Everyone turned.
Robert’s face went pale.
