THE KEY TO ROOM 317 / Chapter 8 / 9

Chapter 9 - Adrian Put Both Families on the Record

Three months later.

The courthouse was full.

Lawrence Russo sat at the defense table.

Victor Morel sat behind another attorney.

Separate trials.

Connected evidence.

The 317 ledger.

David Morel’s recording.

Helena’s testimony.

Robert’s testimony.

Evelyn’s testimony.

Camille’s testimony.

Adrian’s.

Sophie’s too.

Lawrence denied everything.

Until the bank records arrived.

Victor admitted enough.

Not everything.

At first.

Then prosecutors played David’s tape.

I STILL TRUST MY BROTHER.

Victor closed his eyes.

After that.

He changed his plea.

Adrian watched.

No satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Lawrence was convicted of conspiracy, financial crimes, witness intimidation, and ordering David Morel’s murder.

The investigation into Charles Russo’s death was reopened.

The doctor confessed.

Victor admitted arranging access.

Lawrence had authorized the poisoning.

Victor received a reduced sentence for cooperation.

Helena was not charged.

She had hidden evidence.

But prosecutors accepted that she acted under documented threats against Camille.

Robert admitted erasing hotel records.

He received probation.

He did not complain.

“I did it.”

That was all he said.

Evelyn’s disappearance was officially reclassified.

Not missing.

Not dead.

Protected witness.

Wrongfully coerced.

Adrian stood beside her when the clerk restored her legal identity.

She stared at the paper.

“Evelyn Morel.”

Adrian nodded.

“You said you needed to hear yourself say it.”

She smiled through tears.

“I think I needed to see someone else write it.”

Camille’s engagement ring stayed in Adrian’s safe.

Not on her hand.

They met sometimes.

Coffee.

Dinner.

No promises.

No contracts.

No family meetings.

One evening she asked:

“Do you hate me?”

Adrian thought about it.

“No.”

“Do you trust me?”

“Not yet.”

She nodded.

“That hurts less than a lie.”

Adrian almost smiled.

Sophie left for Paris.

Robert cried at the airport.

Denied it afterward.

Before leaving, Sophie handed Adrian one envelope.

“What is this?”

“Something I found in the old hotel personnel files.”

He stared.

“Please tell me it is not another secret.”

“It is.”

He sighed.

Sophie smiled.

“Small one.”

Inside.

A photograph.

David Morel.

Evelyn.

Adrian at age four.

Room 317.

All three smiling.

Adrian stared.

“Why were we here?”

Robert looked at the image.

Then remembered.

“Your parents’ anniversary.”

Evelyn laughed softly.

“I forgot.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You came here before the disappearance.”

“Yes.”

“It was not always a bad room.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

That changed something.

Not much.

But enough.

The room had held fear.

But before that.

It had held a family.

Adrian looked at Sophie.

“Thank you.”

She nodded.

Then left.

That night.

Adrian returned to the Grand Meridian.

Room 317 had been closed during the trials.

Robert handed him the key.

“What are you going to do with it?”

Adrian looked at the brass number.

“Open it one last time.”

Inside.

He found Camille waiting.

He frowned.

“Robert.”

The old manager smiled from the hallway.

“She asked.”

Adrian looked at Camille.

She wore no red gown.

No ring.

Simple black coat.

She said:

“I thought you deserved to decide if I came in.”

Adrian stared at her.

May you like

Then stepped aside.

“Come in.”
