Chapter 2 - The Room Lily Wasn't Supposed to Enter

Marcello did not laugh.

That was the first thing everyone noticed.

A few guests nearby had smiled when Lily said the glamorous woman’s belly had “fallen off upstairs,” assuming it was the confused imagination of a three-year-old.

Marcello did not.

He crouched until he was level with her.

“Show me.”

Lily slipped her tiny hand into his and immediately pulled him toward the staircase.

Her mother, Francesca, followed with a worried expression.

“Marcello, she’s three. She may have seen a dress form, or—”

“She said she can show me where it was hidden.”

That ended the argument.

The three of them crossed the upper gallery while the orchestra continued playing below. Gold light from the chandeliers stretched across the marble floor. Behind them, the party went on as though nothing had changed.

Lily stopped outside a guest dressing room at the far end of the corridor.

“This one.”

The door was unlocked.

Inside, everything appeared ordinary.

A half-finished glass of champagne sat beside a mirror. A silver evening bag rested on a chair. A perfume bottle stood open on the vanity.

Then Lily pointed behind a folding silk screen.

“There.”

Marcello moved around it.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

An ivory-colored silicone pregnancy belly lay beneath a folded shawl.

It was shaped perfectly.

Painted veins.

Realistic skin tone.

A soft adhesive edge around the back.

Francesca covered her mouth.

Marcello stared at it, then looked toward the ballroom doors below.

The woman Lily had pointed at was Bianca Rinaldi.

For three months, Bianca had told everyone she was carrying Marcello’s child.

She had shown ultrasound photographs.

She had visited a private obstetrician.

She had cried in Marcello’s arms the first time she claimed to hear the baby’s heartbeat.

And now her pregnancy was lying behind a silk screen.

Marcello reached toward it.

A voice came from the doorway.

“I wouldn’t touch that.”

Bianca stood there.

She looked beautiful even when terrified.

Her silver gown shimmered beneath the warm light. One hand rested automatically over the rounded stomach beneath her dress.

The same stomach that should not have existed if the object on the floor was what it appeared to be.

Francesca looked from Bianca to the silicone belly.

“What is that?”

Bianca’s expression changed for only a fraction of a second.

Then the fear disappeared.

“It’s a medical support shell.”

Marcello said nothing.

Bianca continued quickly.

“My doctor recommended it because of an abdominal condition. I use it when the baby sits too low.”

“That looks like an entire pregnancy prosthetic,” Francesca said.

Bianca’s jaw tightened.

“It isn’t.”

Lily stepped around Marcello.

She pointed at the object again.

“That’s the belly.”

Bianca forced a smile.

“Sweetheart, you’re confused.”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

Then she looked at Marcello.

“When it fell off, something shiny fell out too.”

Marcello’s eyes narrowed.

“What kind of shiny thing?”

Lily held up two fingers as though pinching something small.

“A key.”

Bianca stopped breathing for one unmistakable second.

Marcello saw it.

So did Francesca.

Lily pointed at the silicone belly.

“She put the key inside it.”

Then she looked directly at Bianca.

“But when she hid the belly, she took the key back.”

And for the first time that evening, Bianca looked less like a woman caught in a lie—

and more like a woman terrified that a child had seen too much.
