Chapter 5 - The Key Hidden Beneath the Spare Tire

The SUVs stopped hard.

Doors opened.

Men stepped out.

Antonio killed the garage lights.

Sofia whispered:

“Back exit.”

Matteo grabbed the toolbox.

Frank grabbed Clara’s arm.

Henry pulled Valentina close.

I followed.

The black Mercedes sat between the main door and the service exit.

Matteo looked at it.

“We need the vault key.”

Antonio stared.

“Now?”

“Yes.”

Bullets hit the garage door.

Matteo opened the trunk.

Lifted the carpet.

Spare tire.

He loosened it.

Underneath:

A taped metal capsule.

Inside:

A small silver key.

Stamped:

218.

Matteo stared.

Sofia whispered:

“That is it.”

Another crash.

The main door bent inward.

Antonio pointed toward a hydraulic lift.

“Tunnel.”

Frank laughed.

“You built one?”

Antonio answered:

“After the first explosion, I became difficult to surprise.”

They moved a floor panel.

Narrow maintenance passage.

We crawled beneath the garage.

Above us, men entered.

Paul’s voice echoed.

“Antonio.”

Matteo stopped.

Sofia grabbed his sleeve.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“He spent fourteen years taking my family apart.”

“And he wants you angry.”

Matteo stared at the tunnel ahead.

Then moved.

We emerged behind the abandoned gas station.

A second car waited.

Frank’s old pickup.

Matteo almost laughed.

“You planned everything.”

Frank shook his head.

“No.”

He started the truck.

“I am simply old.”

We drove to the city.

Hale Private Trust occupied the top floors of a glass tower.

Closed at night.

Except private clients.

Victor Hale was there.

Sofia knew because she had tracked his security schedule for months.

Matteo looked at her.

“You became good at this.”

She answered:

“I had time.”

That hurt.

They entered through an underground service entrance Henry still had access to.

He had built vehicles for Victor’s companies.

Another connection.

Another compromise.

The private vault required:

Client key.

Biometric approval.

Secondary code.

Matteo held the key.

Sofia had the code.

Henry knew which employee could authorize access.

Clara knew the old corporate account number.

Everyone had one piece.

No one had all.

Just like the conspiracy.

The vault clerk looked terrified.

Henry said:

“Open 218.”

“I cannot.”

Sofia placed documents on the counter.

“Federal preservation order.”

The clerk stared.

“Is this real?”

“No,” Matteo said.

Everyone looked at him.

He continued:

“But if you call the number at the bottom, a real federal agent will answer.”

The clerk called.

Then went pale.

Minutes later, vault 218 opened.

Inside:

Original transfer.

Company ledgers.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

And one sealed envelope.

MATTEO ROMANO.

He stared.

Sofia looked confused.

“I did not put that there.”

Antonio shook his head.

Neither had he.

Matteo opened it.

Inside:

A photograph.

Him at age nineteen.

Standing beside Paul.

On the back:

HE WILL SIGN WHEN HE IS READY.

Matteo frowned.

Then a legal document.

A power of attorney.

Signed by Matteo at age nineteen.

His signature real.

He remembered.

Paul had said it was for university finances.

Matteo looked at the authority granted.

Broad.

Very broad.

Company.

Trusts.

Accounts.

Vehicles.

Antonio whispered:

“He used you.”

Matteo stared.

Paul had not simply taken over after Antonio disappeared.

He had built legal control through Matteo himself.

At nineteen.

Before Matteo understood.

Sofia turned pages.

Then froze.

“What?”

She found a trust amendment.

Beneficiary:

MATTEO ROMANO.

Contingent controller:

PAUL ROMANO.

Activation:

Upon death or legal incapacity of Matteo.

Antonio went pale.

Matteo stared.

“So he did not need me forever.”

“No,” Sofia whispered.

“He only needed you until the sale.”

Silence.

Henry looked at the pending deal.

“If Hale buys the company, Paul gets paid through the contingency structure.”

Valentina stared.

“He planned to remove Matteo after closing.”

Nobody said the word.

They did not need to.

Matteo looked at the photo.

Then at the power of attorney.

Then at Valentina.

“Did you know this?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Henry whispered:

“I knew there was a clause.”

Valentina turned.

“Dad.”

Henry closed his eyes.

Matteo looked at him.

“How much did you know?”

“Enough to know the sale was dangerous.”

“And still pushed it.”

“Paul had Cross Motors.”

Matteo stared.

“Always the company.”

Henry looked at his daughter.

“No.”

His voice broke.

“Always her.”

Valentina went still.

Henry continued.

“Paul said if I stopped cooperating, he would use her name in the Romano accounts.”

Matteo frowned.

Valentina looked confused.

“What accounts?”

Henry whispered:

“He already had your signature.”

Silence.

Valentina stared.

“When?”

“Charity paperwork.

Three years ago.”

Matteo closed his eyes.

Same method.

Signatures hidden inside harmless documents.

Paul had prepared both of them.

Matteo and Valentina.

If the deal failed, both could be framed.

If it succeeded, Paul walked away.

Then the vault alarm sounded.

Victor Hale stepped into the corridor with two guards.

May you like

He smiled.

“You should have waited until morning.”
