Chapter 6 - The Banker Who Owned the Exit

Victor Hale was sixty.

Tall.

Silver hair.

Calm eyes.

The kind of man who did not raise his voice because everyone around him already understood the threat.

He looked at Matteo.

“Your father’s son.”

Matteo stared.

“You knew he was alive.”

“Yes.”

“For fourteen years.”

“Yes.”

“Did everyone?”

Victor smiled.

“Enough people.”

Antonio stepped forward.

Victor looked at him.

“You aged badly.”

Antonio laughed.

“You remained ugly.”

Victor’s smile vanished.

Good.

Matteo held up the transfer document.

“This sale is over.”

Victor looked at it.

“No.”

“It is forged.”

“The market does not care.”

“Federal prosecutors might.”

Victor glanced at the vault clerk.

Then at the cameras.

“You think those cameras are recording?”

Sofia went still.

Victor smiled.

“No.”

The building belonged to him.

The vault.

Security.

Evidence.

All inside his system.

Matteo looked at Henry.

“You brought us into his bank.”

Henry swallowed.

“I thought the federal line would protect us.”

Victor laughed.

“Henry still believes institutions are stronger than ownership.”

Then a voice came from the elevator.

“They are when ownership is under warrant.”

Everyone turned.

Federal agents.

Leading them:

Agent Sarah Cole.

Forty-two.

Dark suit.

Badge.

She looked at Victor.

“Step away from the vault.”

Victor’s expression changed.

Barely.

Matteo looked at Sofia.

“You called them.”

She nodded.

“Before we left the garage.”

Victor stared at her.

“You always were inconvenient.”

Sofia smiled.

“That is why I am still alive.”

Agents entered.

Hard drives bagged.

Documents photographed.

Vault sealed.

Victor was not arrested.

Not yet.

He smiled at Matteo.

“You think paper wins this?”

Matteo answered:

“No.”

He held up the old Mercedes key.

“This did.”

Victor frowned.

Matteo continued.

“The car survived.

My father survived.

My mother survived.

Clara survived.

Frank survived.”

He looked at Victor.

“You built a plan around everyone disappearing.”

Victor’s smile faded.

“And they kept coming back.”

Agent Cole took the original transfer.

Then the power of attorney.

She frowned.

“This signature is real.”

Matteo nodded.

“I was nineteen.”

“What were you told you were signing?”

“University finances.”

She looked at Paul’s authority.

“Then we may have fraud.”

“May?”

She glanced at him.

“Courts enjoy precise words.”

Matteo almost smiled.

Valentina handed her the charity documents.

“My signature too.”

Agent Cole examined them.

Then looked at Henry.

“You knew?”

Henry nodded.

“Yes.”

“Full extent?”

“No.”

“Enough?”

“Yes.”

She wrote something down.

Henry looked at Valentina.

“I am sorry.”

She did not answer.

Agent Cole looked at Antonio.

“You are legally dead.”

Antonio sighed.

“Apparently.”

“Do you have identity documents?”

“Yes.”

“Real?”

He paused.

“Some.”

She closed her eyes.

Frank laughed.

Nobody else did.

By dawn, the bank was under federal seal.

Victor Hale walked out through a different exit with attorneys.

Paul had not appeared.

Matteo stood outside.

The city waking around him.

Sofia beside him.

Antonio on the other side.

For the first time in fourteen years, both parents stood with him in daylight.

He looked at them.

“I do not know what to do with this.”

Sofia understood.

“You do not have to know today.”

Antonio nodded.

Matteo looked at Valentina.

She stood near Henry.

Red gown wrinkled.

Makeup gone.

Eyes tired.

She walked over.

“Matteo.”

He waited.

“I told Nora to throw away the key.”

“Yes.”

“I lied about when I found your father.”

“Yes.”

“I delayed telling you because I was afraid.”

“Yes.”

She swallowed.

“I love you.”

He looked at her.

“That does not erase the first three answers.”

“I know.”

Good.

Then Agent Cole approached.

“We found something on one of the hard drives.”

Matteo turned.

“What?”

She showed him a video file.

Timestamp:

Fourteen years ago.

Night of the explosion.

Security footage.

Original garage.

Paul Romano standing beside the duplicate Mercedes.

Victor Hale beside him.

And Henry Cross.

Valentina stared.

Her father went white.

Matteo looked at Henry.

“You were there.”

Silence.

Henry closed his eyes.

Matteo’s voice hardened.

“You were there before the explosion.”

Henry whispered:

“Yes.”

Valentina stepped back.

“Dad.”

Henry looked at her.

May you like

Tears filled his eyes.

“I helped them set the car.”
