Chapter 6 - The Woman Ethan Met in the Garden

Alexander forgot his father was holding a gun.
He forgot the cabin.
The rings.
Everything.
He knelt in front of Ethan.
“Yesterday?”
The boy nodded.
“Where?”
“The garden.”
“What garden?”
“Behind the old greenhouse.”
Mrs. Whitmore covered her mouth.
Alexander looked at her.
“You knew?”
She nodded slowly.
“She came to me first.”
“Why?”
“To ask whether Richard was still watching the estate.”
Richard’s face hardened.
Alexander turned toward him.
Evelyn had come back.
Not for money.
Not for revenge.
To find out whether the man who imprisoned her still controlled the house.
Alexander asked Ethan:
“Did Mommy talk to you?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
The boy looked at Richard.
Then whispered:
“She said I was brave.”
Alexander’s eyes filled.
“And?”
“She said not to tell the bad man.”
Richard laughed once.
Ethan hid behind Elena.
Alexander stood.
“You are done.”
Richard raised the cane gun.
Samuel moved.
Fast for seventy-four.
He hit Richard’s arm with a wooden chair.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Alexander tackled his father.
The cane slid away.
Elena grabbed Ethan.
Mrs. Whitmore picked up the gun.
Her hands shook.
Richard stared at her.
“Margaret.”
Her first name.
No one used it anymore.
“Put it down.”
She pointed it at him.
“For forty-seven years, I did what you told me.”
Richard smiled.
“And look what it bought you.”
She looked at the rings.
Then at Alexander.
Then Ethan.
“It cost more.”
Samuel called police.
Not local police.
Federal investigators.
The number had been written on Evelyn’s note.
Alexander noticed.
“She planned this.”
Mrs. Whitmore nodded.
“She said if Richard appeared, call that number.”
Alexander looked at his father.
“You came because you thought the rings were moving.”
Richard said nothing.
Twenty minutes later, federal vehicles surrounded the cabin.
Richard Whitmore was arrested.
Alive.
After twelve years legally dead.
But Alexander did not feel finished.
He looked at the note again.
I AM CLOSE ENOUGH TO COME HOME.
Then Ethan tugged his sleeve.
“Dad.”
Alexander looked down.
“Mommy said the yellow flowers.”
“What?”
“The yellow flowers mean yes.”
Mrs. Whitmore stared.
Then understood.
“The greenhouse.”
They returned to the estate.
Behind the old greenhouse grew a row of yellow irises.
Ethan ran toward them.
Alexander followed.
A woman stepped from behind the glass structure.
Thin.
Dark blond hair.
Older.
Scar near her temple.
Alexander stopped.
Evelyn.
Two years missing.
Alive.
She stared at him.
He stared back.
Ethan ran first.
“Mommy!”
She dropped to her knees.
Caught him.
Held him.
The sound she made broke something inside Alexander.
He walked closer.
Stopped five feet away.
Evelyn looked up.
“Alex.”
He could not answer.
He looked at her hands.
No wedding ring.
Then at her face.
“You were here yesterday.”
“Yes.”
“You saw Ethan.”
“Yes.”
“You did not see me.”
Her expression broke.
“I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“Of what you knew.”
Alexander stared.
“I knew nothing.”
“I know.”
“That is the problem.”
Silence.
Mrs. Whitmore approached slowly.
Evelyn stood.
The two women looked at each other.
Mrs. Whitmore cried.
“I’m sorry.”
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“You locked me in a car.”
“I did.”
“You helped George take me.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to Alexander.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn looked at Ethan.
Then back.
“But you hid the rings from Richard.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Mrs. Whitmore whispered:
“Because I finally understood what he had made me become.”
Evelyn said nothing.
Alexander asked:
“Where have you been?”
“Protected housing.”
“Federal?”
“Private at first.
Federal later.”
“Why not contact me?”
“Richard had access to your phones.
Your lawyer.
Your security.”
Alexander stared.
“Even after he was dead.”
“He was never dead.”
She looked toward the house.
“He owned pieces of your life you did not know existed.”
Alexander nodded.
That he understood now.
Evelyn reached into her coat.
A black notebook.
Original ledger.
Richard Whitmore’s handwriting.
Names.
Dates.
Crimes.
Payments.
Alexander stared.
“This is what he wanted.”
“Yes.”
“And the rings prove the entries.”
“Yes.”
“Why come back now?”
Evelyn looked at Ethan.
“Because Richard started asking about him.”
Alexander’s face changed.
“What?”
“He wanted to know what Ethan remembered from the night I disappeared.”
Silence.
Ethan held his mother tighter.
Evelyn continued.
“I realized silence was not protecting my son anymore.”
Alexander looked toward the estate.
Then at his mother.
Then at Evelyn.
“Is everything in this ledger enough?”
She answered:
“Almost.”
“Almost?”
“One ring is missing.”
Alexander frowned.
“We found twenty-three.”
“There should be twenty-four.”
Silence.
Mrs. Whitmore went pale.
Alexander saw it.
“You know.”
She whispered:
“Yes.”
“Whose ring?”
She looked at Evelyn.
May you like
Then at Alexander.
“Mine.”
