Chapter 8 - The Courthouse Where the First Lie Began

The old courthouse had been abandoned for nine years.
Broken windows.
Stone steps.
No lights.
Alexander arrived at 11:30 p.m.
Evelyn beside him.
Samuel.
Federal agents hidden two blocks away.
Mrs. Whitmore stayed at the estate.
She wanted to come.
Alexander said no.
For once, she accepted it.
Daniel Price waited inside the old courtroom.
Fifty-nine.
Gray suit.
No tie.
Ethan sat beside him.
Unhurt.
Alexander stopped.
“Let him go.”
Daniel smiled.
“Ledger.”
Evelyn held it.
“The boy first.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You were always difficult.”
Evelyn stared.
“You kept Richard’s system alive after he disappeared.”
Daniel laughed.
“Richard was sentimental.”
Alexander frowned.
“Sentimental?”
“He used leverage to control people.”
Daniel looked around the courtroom.
“I use it to own things.”
Ethan looked at his father.
Not crying.
Watching.
Alexander softened his voice.
“You okay?”
The boy nodded.
Daniel tapped the blank ring on the table.
Alexander looked at it.
“What is that?”
“A beginning.”
“No engraving.”
“Not yet.”
Daniel smiled.
“It was going to be Ethan’s.”
Silence.
Alexander’s face went cold.
“You planned to use my son.”
“Your father used you.
Why waste a successful model?”
Evelyn’s hand tightened around the ledger.
Daniel continued.
“I spent thirty years watching Whitmores keep power because everyone was afraid of what they knew.”
“You want the ledger.”
“I want the network.”
“Richard is arrested.”
“Which makes this easier.”
Alexander stared.
Daniel had not kidnapped Ethan to protect Richard.
He had done it because Richard’s fall created an opening.
Evelyn asked:
“What does my ring prove?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Your ring proves Alexander’s trust can be frozen.”
Alexander frowned.
“My trust?”
“Yes.”
Daniel pointed at the old judge’s bench.
“Richard built a morality clause into the private holdings.”
Alexander almost laughed.
“My father?”
“He enjoyed hypocrisy.”
“What triggers it?”
“A credible criminal investigation into the controlling heir.”
Alexander stared.
Daniel continued.
“Ethan becomes successor trustee.”
Silence.
“He is five.”
“Exactly.”
Alexander understood.
A child trustee meant a guardian.
Daniel smiled.
“And I drafted the guardianship documents years ago.”
Evelyn stared.
“You would control Ethan.”
“And through Ethan, everything.”
Alexander looked at his son.
Daniel had planned beyond Richard.
Beyond Evelyn.
Beyond all of them.
Samuel whispered:
“How do you trigger the investigation?”
Daniel smiled.
“With the rings.”
Alexander frowned.
“They prove Richard’s crimes.”
“They also contain fingerprints.”
Evelyn went still.
Daniel continued.
“Your mother handled them.
Richard handled them.
Evelyn handled them.”
Then looked at Alexander.
“And now you have handled them.”
Alexander understood.
Daniel had created altered records linking recent crimes to him.
He wanted the original ledger destroyed.
Then the rings would become ambiguous evidence.
Evelyn said:
“You still need prosecutors to believe it.”
Daniel smiled.
“Some are already paid.”
Samuel muttered:
“Same system.”
“Improved.”
Daniel held out his hand.
“Ledger.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
Alexander whispered:
“No.”
She looked at him.
Then at Ethan.
She handed it over.
Daniel smiled.
Then Ethan spoke.
“That’s not Mommy’s book.”
Daniel froze.
Alexander looked at his son.
Ethan pointed.
“That one is red.”
The ledger in Daniel’s hand was black.
Evelyn smiled.
Daniel’s face changed.
Copy.
The original was already with federal investigators.
Daniel grabbed Ethan.
Gun against the boy’s side.
Alexander stopped.
“No.”
Daniel backed toward the judge’s chambers.
Then lights flooded the courtroom.
Federal agents entered.
Daniel shouted:
“Back!”
Ethan suddenly dropped to the floor.
Exactly as Samuel had taught him in the car.
Alexander moved.
One second.
He crossed the distance.
Hit Daniel.
Gun fell.
Evelyn pulled Ethan away.
Agents took Daniel down.
He shouted:
“You think the ledger saves you?”
Alexander held Ethan.
Daniel continued laughing.
“Richard did not start this!”
Mrs. Whitmore’s voice came from the courtroom entrance.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
She had come anyway.
Daniel smiled.
“Tell him.”
Alexander stared at his mother.
“Tell me what?”
She looked at the twenty-fourth ring in her hand.
Then at the old courtroom.
“Your grandfather started it.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
Of course.
But Mrs. Whitmore continued.
“And Richard killed him for control.”
Silence.
Alexander stared.
“My grandfather died of a heart attack.”
“No.”
She looked at Daniel.
“Daniel knows.”
Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Mrs. Whitmore said:
“Because his father helped Richard do it.”
