Chapter 6 - The Man Everyone Had Paid to Disappear

We flew back that afternoon.

Police reached the Hale house before us.

David was gone.

Richard was alive.

Vanessa was alive.

Nothing had been taken.

At least nothing obvious.

Luca walked into the study.

Richard sat with a bandage over one eyebrow.

Vanessa stood near the window.

She had changed out of the red gown.

Simple black dress.

No makeup.

Luca looked at her first.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

Then Richard.

"What happened?"

Richard answered:

"David wanted the trust files."

"Why?"

"Because they prove I controlled the company."

Vanessa looked at Luca.

"Not me."

Richard nodded.

"I used her name."

Luca stared.

"Since she was a child."

"Yes."

"Without her knowing."

"Yes."

Vanessa whispered:

"Until last year."

Luca looked at her.

"You knew then."

"Yes."

Richard said:

"She wanted out."

Luca turned.

"What?"

Vanessa looked at her father.

Richard continued:

"She told me to dissolve it."

Luca stared at her.

"Did you?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"He said dissolving it would trigger an audit."

Richard said:

"It would have."

Luca laughed.

"So your solution was marriage."

Richard looked away.

Vanessa cried.

"He told me your company could absorb the trust."

Luca's face hardened.

"And you let it."

She shook her head.

"No."

He frowned.

Vanessa went to the desk.

Pulled out a document.

"Three days before our wedding, I changed the beneficiary structure."

Richard's face tightened.

Luca read it.

The trust had not merged into his company.

It had been redirected into a dormant charity foundation.

He looked at Vanessa.

"You stopped it."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because then I would have had to explain all of it."

Luca laughed bitterly.

"So you protected me by lying."

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

Luca handed the paper back.

"Everyone in this family has the same disease."

Richard said:

"She saved you."

Luca turned.

"No."

He looked at Vanessa.

"She made one right choice inside a year of wrong ones."

Vanessa nodded.

Fair.

Police questioned Richard.

Then June arrived.

She had taken an earlier flight.

Maria stayed in Charleston.

She refused to enter the Hale house.

June carried more records.

She placed them on the desk.

"I found David's second death certificate."

Richard closed his eyes.

Luca stared.

"Second?"

June nodded.

"Filed nine years ago."

Vanessa frowned.

"But he was alive eight years ago."

"Exactly."

June showed the signature.

Authorized attorney:

RICHARD HALE.

Luca turned.

"You killed him on paper again."

Richard looked exhausted.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"He had warrants."

"So you solved it."

"Temporarily."

June shook her head.

"You created a ghost."

Richard looked at her.

June continued:

"A man with no stable identity, no legal obligations, and decades of leverage."

Luca said:

"And then you kept paying him."

Richard nodded.

"To keep him away."

Vanessa whispered:

"From me?"

Richard looked at her.

"Mostly."

She stared.

Richard continued:

"He knew he was your biological father."

"He wanted money because of me."

"Yes."

"Did he ever want me?"

Richard's face softened.

"No."

Vanessa looked away.

That hurt.

Luca asked:

"What does he want now?"

"The original ledger."

"Antonio said he had it."

Richard nodded.

"He did."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

June said:

"Then why come here?"

Richard looked at Vanessa.

"Because he thinks Elaine left it to her."

Vanessa frowned.

"My mother?"

"Yes."

Richard continued:

"Elaine met David before she died."

Vanessa went pale.

"When?"

"Ten years ago."

"You knew?"

"After."

"What happened?"

"He gave her a key."

Luca looked at Vanessa.

"A key to what?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

Richard said:

"Elaine hid it."

Vanessa stared at him.

"You searched her things."

"Yes."

"After she died."

"Yes."

"Did you find it?"

"No."

June looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

"Did your mother leave a personal box?"

Vanessa thought.

Then froze.

"A sewing box."

Richard stood.

"What?"

She looked at him.

"You threw everything away after the funeral."

"No."

Vanessa shook her head.

"I kept one thing."

We went upstairs.

Her childhood room.

Closet.

Top shelf.

A wooden sewing box.

Dusty.

Vanessa opened it.

Thread.

Needles.

Buttons.

Nothing.

Then I noticed the bottom was too thick.

"Lift that."

Vanessa pulled the lining.

A hidden compartment.

Inside:

One brass key.

One bank card.

One note.

Vanessa read.

IF DAVID COMES BACK, DO NOT GIVE THIS TO RICHARD.

Silence.

Richard looked wounded.

Vanessa stared at him.

"My mother didn't trust you."

Richard whispered:

"She had reason."

Luca took the bank card.

Private vault.

Savannah.

June looked at the key.

"That's not a safe deposit key."

Richard's face changed.

Luca noticed.

"You know it."

Richard said nothing.

Vanessa stared.

"Dad."

He looked at the key.

Then whispered:

"It opens Antonio Romano's old office."

Luca froze.

"My father's office?"

Richard nodded.

"The one under the courthouse."

June went pale.

"That room was sealed twenty years ago."

Luca looked at her.

"Why?"

May you like

June answered:

"Because someone died there."
