Chapter 8 - Box 214

The bank opened at eight.
By eight-thirty, Luca, Vanessa, June, and I were inside a private room.
Richard waited with police.
The ledger was already copied.
Authorities had been notified.
No more family decisions about what to hide.
Vanessa inserted the bank card.
The clerk checked old authorization.
Then the brass key.
Box 214 opened.
Inside:
Cash.
Three passports.
One flash drive.
A photograph.
And a handwritten confession.
Vanessa picked up the photograph.
David Hale.
Older.
Standing beside Antonio Romano.
Luca stared.
"When?"
June checked the date.
"Four years ago."
Before Antonio's death.
Vanessa whispered:
"They were meeting."
Luca looked at the confession.
Signed:
DAVID HALE.
He read.
I killed Eleanor Shaw.
Silence.
I closed my eyes.
No surprise.
Still hurt.
Luca continued.
Richard did not order it.
He helped me hide it.
Vanessa looked toward the glass wall.
Richard sat outside.
Luca read on.
Antonio Romano saw me leave.
He agreed to silence because I threatened Maria and Luca.
Luca's jaw tightened.
David wrote:
Years later, Antonio tried to end the payments.
I returned.
He shot me after I pointed a gun at Maria.
He saved my life anyway.
Vanessa whispered:
"That matches Maria."
Luca kept reading.
Richard arranged my escape after Antonio died.
Not because he loved me.
Because I kept proof of everything he had done.
Then:
Richard is guilty of protecting me.
Antonio is guilty of protecting his family with lies.
Maria is guilty of running.
I am guilty of making all of them afraid.
Luca stopped.
Then continued.
Vanessa is guilty of nothing I did.
Her face broke.
She covered her mouth.
David wrote:
She is my daughter.
But I was never her father.
Richard was.
Vanessa started crying.
Luca looked at her.
Then read the final lines.
If this box is opened, I am either dead or finally tired.
The ledger under the courthouse is real.
The copy on this drive is real.
The final account is in Buenos Aires.
Richard cannot reach it.
Vanessa should not receive it.
Give it to Eleanor Shaw's family.
I froze.
Luca looked at me.
"No."
I shook my head.
"I don't want his money."
June said:
"Emma."
"No."
Vanessa looked at the cash.
Then at me.
"We can decide later."
Luca inserted the flash drive into a bank computer.
Files.
Scans.
Audio.
One video.
David.
Alive.
Recorded two weeks ago.
Everyone stared.
He looked thinner.
Older.
But alive.
David spoke.
"If Vanessa is watching, I am sorry."
She cried harder.
"I used your name because Richard used your name."
She frowned.
David continued:
"He created the trust."
"I created the fear."
"He raised you."
"I did not."
Vanessa looked down.
Then David said:
"Luca Romano."
Luca leaned closer.
"I know you hate me."
A pause.
"You should."
"I threatened your mother."
"I threatened your father."
"I killed Eleanor Shaw."
My hands tightened.
David continued:
"But Richard did one thing I could never do."
"He stayed."
Vanessa looked through the glass at Richard.
David said:
"If you want the truth about why Maria disappeared the second time, ask her why she never told Luca about the baby."
Luca froze.
June looked at him.
Vanessa whispered:
"Baby?"
The video ended.
Luca stared at the black screen.
Then called Maria.
She answered.
"Luca?"
His voice was quiet.
"What baby?"
Silence.
That was enough.
Luca closed his eyes.
"Mom."
Maria started crying.
"I was going to tell you."
"When?"
"Today."
"What baby?"
She whispered:
"Your sister."
The room went silent.
Luca stared.
"I have a sister."
"Had."
His face changed.
"What happened?"
Maria's voice broke.
"She died before she was born."
Luca sat down.
Vanessa looked away.
Maria continued:
"I was pregnant when I disappeared."
"Did Dad know?"
"Yes."
"Did David?"
"Yes."
Luca's eyes hardened.
"Is that why he threatened you?"
"Partly."
"Why hide this from me?"
Maria cried.
"Because I blamed myself."
Luca looked at the confession.
"Did David cause it?"
Silence.
Then Maria answered:
"No."
Luca frowned.
"What happened?"
"Car accident."
"When?"
"Two months after I left."
"Accident?"
"Yes."
"Was David involved?"
"No."
Luca's anger had nowhere to go.
Maria whispered:
"I lost her."
"And then stayed gone."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because grief made fear easier."
Luca said nothing.
Maria continued:
"And because Antonio told me you were safer without both of us running back and forth."
Luca looked at the old photograph.
Antonio.
David.
Every man deciding what safety meant.
He whispered:
"I'm tired of people loving me from a distance."
Maria cried.
"I know."
Then Vanessa's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"Hello?"
A man's voice.
David Hale.
Alive.
"Vanessa."
Her face went white.
Luca looked at her.
May you like
David continued:
"I need to see you once."
