Chapter 8 - The Last Recording Anthony Made

Anthony Vale entered the ballroom in handcuffs.

Seventy.

White hair.

Dark suit.

No weakness in his posture.

Sebastian stared at him.

His father looked almost exactly as he remembered.

Older.

Not dead.

Anthony smiled.

"Son."

Sebastian said nothing.

Nicholas stood beside him.

Daphne near Tessa.

Evelyn across the room.

Charles seated.

Everyone Anthony had controlled was finally in one place.

Marcus put the drive on the table.

"Final Authorization."

Anthony looked at it.

Then at Sebastian.

"You should listen."

Sebastian almost laughed.

"Why?"

"Because it is the best version of you."

Tessa looked sick.

Sebastian inserted the drive.

One audio file.

His voice.

Perfect.

"If I become medically incapacitated, I authorize the Vale Continuity Trust to transfer emergency control to the designated board."

Sebastian stared.

Then the fake voice continued.

"I further authorize liquidation of reserve assets necessary to preserve family stability."

Anthony smiled.

"Convincing."

Sebastian looked at him.

"You made me surrender my own company."

"Your voice did."

"No."

Tessa spoke.

Everyone turned.

She looked at Anthony.

"A machine did."

Anthony frowned.

She continued:

"His voice didn't choose anything."

Sebastian looked at her.

Anthony smiled faintly.

"The maid has opinions."

Sebastian's face hardened.

"Tessa has a name."

Anthony looked at him.

"Sentimental."

Sebastian stepped closer.

"No."

"Basic."

Silence.

Anthony's smile faded.

Nicholas picked up the drive.

"How many transfers did you already make?"

Anthony looked at him.

"Eight million."

"The one in your video."

Nicholas nodded.

"Where?"

Anthony said nothing.

Evelyn answered.

"Cyprus."

Sebastian looked at her.

"You know."

"I traced it."

"Recovered?"

"Frozen."

Anthony's expression changed.

First real crack.

Sebastian noticed.

Evelyn continued:

"Before tonight."

Anthony stared at her.

"You betrayed me."

She laughed.

"You tried to kill my daughter with a plane crash."

Daphne froze.

"What?"

The room went silent.

Evelyn looked at her.

"The crash was real."

Daphne stared.

"You were on the plane."

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"Anthony arranged a mechanical failure."

Charles stood.

"No."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You never knew."

Daphne started crying.

Evelyn continued:

"The pilot landed in a field."

"Anthony's people reached the wreck first."

"They told everyone I died."

"Then offered me a choice."

Sebastian knew before she said it.

"Disappear."

Evelyn nodded.

"Or Daphne gets hurt."

Daphne covered her mouth.

Anthony said:

"That is dramatic."

Evelyn stared at him.

"You have always confused cruelty with efficiency."

Nicholas looked at his father.

"Did you also fake your own death because investigators were close?"

Anthony smiled.

"Among other reasons."

Sebastian asked:

"Did you ever intend to come back?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"When you had built something worth taking."

Silence.

That was the ugliest truth yet.

Sebastian stared.

His father had not watched from love.

Not protection.

Not regret.

He had waited for value.

Anthony continued:

"You improved the companies."

"You cleaned the public side."

"You made regulators comfortable."

"You became respectable."

Sebastian laughed once.

"And you wanted the clean empire."

"Exactly."

Daphne whispered:

"So the engagement restructuring."

Anthony looked at her.

"Useful timing."

She went pale.

Charles closed his eyes.

Sebastian looked at Daphne.

"Did you know he planned to use our engagement?"

"No."

He believed her.

Not everything.

But that.

Anthony looked around.

"None of you understand what happens now."

Sebastian asked:

"What happens?"

"The archive goes public."

Silence.

Evelyn stared.

Anthony smiled.

"If I do not enter a code by midnight, every recording uploads."

Marcus checked the time.

11:21.

Thirty-nine minutes.

Judges.

Police.

Politicians.

Family.

Private conversations.

Real recordings.

Fake recordings.

No way to know which was which.

Nicholas whispered:

"He built a dead-man release."

Anthony smiled.

"Finally, one son learns."

Sebastian looked at the archive.

Then at Tessa.

Twenty-three staff names.

One stolen voice.

One bruised wrist.

All of it began with control.

He asked:

"Can the upload be stopped?"

Nicholas said:

"Maybe."

Evelyn shook her head.

"Not from here."

"Where?"

Anthony answered:

"My old office."

Sebastian frowned.

"That room was sealed after you died."

May you like

Anthony smiled.

"Exactly."
