Chapter 9 - The Room Behind Anthony Vale's Portrait

Anthony's old office had remained untouched for six years.
Locked.
Dustless.
Preserved like a shrine.
Sebastian had hated entering it.
Tonight, they broke the door.
Inside:
Desk.
Books.
Portrait.
No computer.
Nicholas searched the walls.
Evelyn checked the floor.
Tessa stood near the doorway.
Sebastian looked at his father's portrait.
Then remembered something.
Age seventeen.
Anthony telling him:
"Never trust what is framed."
Sebastian lifted the portrait.
Behind it:
A biometric panel.
Nicholas laughed softly.
"Of course."
Fingerprint.
Voice.
Code.
Anthony stood in the hallway under guard.
Sebastian looked at him.
"You built this for yourself."
Anthony smiled.
"Yes."
Nicholas frowned.
"Then we need his finger."
Anthony laughed.
"No."
Evelyn looked closer.
"Two-factor."
"Fingerprint plus phrase."
Sebastian stared.
"What phrase?"
Anthony said nothing.
Daphne whispered:
"I know it."
Everyone turned.
She looked ashamed.
"Your father used to say it at dinners."
Sebastian frowned.
Daphne continued:
"Authority sounds strongest when nobody asks who is speaking."
Tessa went still.
That sentence.
Everything tonight.
Sebastian placed Anthony's finger on the scanner.
Then spoke the phrase.
Nothing.
Nicholas said:
"Wrong voice."
Silence.
Of course.
The system expected Anthony.
Not Sebastian.
Anthony smiled.
"Thirty-one minutes."
Sebastian looked at him.
"Say it."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because if the archive releases, you lose everyone."
Anthony looked at Daphne.
"Her mother."
"Her father."
"Your brother."
"Your board."
"Your police contacts."
"Your judges."
"Everyone."
Sebastian stared.
Anthony continued:
"Then you learn what power really costs."
Tessa spoke from the doorway.
"No."
Anthony looked at her.
She continued:
"He already learned."
"You just haven't."
Anthony frowned.
Tessa pointed toward the panel.
"Can it use a recording?"
Nicholas stared.
Then smiled.
Sebastian understood.
Anthony's own archive.
His own voice.
Used against his system.
Evelyn ran to the chapel.
Returned with a tape.
ANTHONY - DINNER SPEECHES.
They digitized one sentence.
Built the phrase from real fragments.
Nicholas warned:
"It may reject synthetic audio."
Sebastian looked at him.
"Then make it better."
Nicholas almost laughed.
"That's what got us here."
Sebastian paused.
Then nodded.
"Fair."
They used a clean recording.
Not synthetic.
Anthony had spoken every word separately across years.
Nicholas stitched them together.
Authority sounds strongest when nobody asks who is speaking.
The panel blinked.
Accepted.
Anthony's face changed.
The wall opened.
Server rack.
One terminal.
Countdown.
23:14.
Nicholas sat.
Evelyn beside him.
Files moving.
Scripts.
Destinations.
Encrypted uploads.
Sebastian asked:
"Can you stop it?"
Nicholas typed.
"Yes."
Then stopped.
His face changed.
"What?"
"There are two options."
"Stop release."
"Or release verified originals only."
Silence.
Evelyn looked at Sebastian.
"Verified originals would expose Anthony."
"And Charles."
"And me."
"Nicholas too."
Daphne whispered:
"And maybe my father."
Charles closed his eyes.
Sebastian looked at him.
Charles nodded.
"I signed things."
Evelyn said:
"Some recordings implicate public officials."
Marcus added:
"Could reopen cases."
Nicholas looked at Sebastian.
"If we stop everything, the evidence stays hidden."
"If we release verified originals to authorities, we expose everyone."
Anthony smiled.
"You won't."
Sebastian looked at him.
Anthony continued:
"Too much collateral damage."
Sebastian looked at Tessa.
She touched her bruised wrist.
He asked:
"What do you think?"
Everyone stared at him.
Anthony laughed.
"You are asking a maid?"
Sebastian ignored him.
Tessa looked surprised.
Then answered.
"Don't put private people's pain on the internet."
Sebastian nodded.
"And the crimes?"
"Give them to people who can investigate."
Nicholas looked at the terminal.
"Targeted release."
"Prosecutors."
"Independent counsel."
"Internal auditors."
Evelyn nodded.
"Possible."
Anthony stopped smiling.
Sebastian said:
"Do it."
Nicholas executed.
Countdown stopped at 11:02.
Files transferred.
Not public.
Not erased.
Preserved.
Verified.
Controlled by no single family member.
Anthony stared at the screen.
Then at Sebastian.
"You gave away leverage."
Sebastian looked at him.
"Good."
Anthony whispered:
"You'll regret that."
Sebastian shook his head.
"No."
"I regret learning from you."
Police arrived at midnight.
Federal agents too.
Anthony was taken first.
Pierce next.
Dr. Wynn followed later.
Nicholas remained.
He had confessed to the fake staff orders.
He looked at Tessa.
"I'm sorry."
She nodded.
"I heard you."
Not forgiveness.
Just receipt.
Daphne stood near Sebastian.
No ring removed yet.
No decision.
She asked:
"What happens to us?"
Sebastian looked at her.
"Tomorrow."
Her eyes filled.
May you like
He continued:
"Tonight belongs to the people whose voices were used without permission."
