Chapter 4 - Box 214 Was Already Open

We reached the old postal annex in fifteen minutes.
Too late.
The side door was open.
Peter stopped.
“That lock was replaced last month.”
Lorenzo looked at his guards.
“Stay outside.”
They did not like that.
Neither did I.
But Lorenzo went in.
So did Peter.
Daniel.
Isabella.
And me.
The annex smelled like paper and dust.
Rows of metal boxes.
214 was near the back.
Open.
Empty.
Lorenzo stared.
Peter whispered:
“He got here first.”
A voice came from the darkness.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Thomas Hale stepped out.
Seventy-one.
Gray coat.
Cane.
He held a small cassette.
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.
“You found it.”
“Yes.”
“Before my uncle?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
Hale looked toward the rear exit.
“Gone.”
Lorenzo reached for the tape.
Hale did not give it to him.
“Not yet.”
Lorenzo stared.
“Why?”
“Because your father named people on this tape who are still alive.”
“So?”
“So once you hear it, you become part of a twenty-year-old investigation.”
Lorenzo almost smiled.
“I became part of it when I was thirteen.”
Hale gave him the cassette.
Peter found an old player.
The tape clicked.
Lorenzo’s father’s voice.
Younger.
Tense.
“If this reaches Thomas Hale, then Richard Crane did not intercept it.”
Isabella closed her eyes.
The voice continued.
“My brother and I have been moving money through Vale Logistics.”
Lorenzo’s face hardened.
He admitted it.
Directly.
Daniel looked away.
Then:
“Richard Crane manages the books.”
Isabella started crying.
“My brother handles payments.”
Silence.
“I handled political contacts.”
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.
Then his father said:
“I want out.”
The tape hissed.
“They killed Evelyn.”
Daniel froze.
“My mother.”
The voice continued.
“I cannot prove my brother ordered it, but Richard knew the mechanic.”
Isabella whispered:
“No.”
The tape continued.
“Sarah knows enough to put us all in prison.”
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
“If she disappears, it is because I failed to protect her.”
Silence.
Then:
“My sons cannot know about each other yet.”
Daniel looked at Lorenzo.
“The first is Lorenzo.”
A pause.
“The second is Daniel.”
Daniel stared at the player.
“I have failed both.”
The tape stopped.
Nobody moved.
Hale took a breath.
“That was enough to open a case.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“What happened?”
“My supervisor shut it down.”
“Paid?”
“I believe so.”
“By my uncle?”
“Yes.”
“Did you keep a copy?”
Hale nodded.
“Not of the tape.”
“Of what?”
“Bank records.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“Where?”
Hale opened his coat.
One envelope.
Inside were photocopies.
Transfers.
Richard Crane.
Lorenzo’s uncle.
And one surprising name.
Sarah Vale.
Lorenzo stared.
He looked at his mother.
She was not there.
Back at the house.
Daniel saw the name.
“What is that?”
Hale answered:
“An account in Sarah’s name received two million dollars.”
Lorenzo’s face changed.
“When?”
“One month after she disappeared.”
Peter whispered:
“That looks bad.”
Lorenzo looked at Hale.
“Was it her account?”
“Yes.”
“Did she take the money?”
Hale shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel said:
“Sarah said she was framed.”
Hale nodded.
“That is possible.”
Isabella looked at the records.
“Who opened the account?”
Hale pointed.
Signature authorization.
Richard Crane.
Her father.
She went pale.
Lorenzo stared.
“He created an account in my mother’s name.”
“Yes.”
“And moved stolen money into it.”
“Yes.”
“To make her look guilty.”
“That is what I believe.”
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.
Then Hale pulled out one more page.
“The money did not stay there.”
“Where did it go?”
“To another account.”
“Whose?”
Hale looked at Daniel.
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Hale handed him the page.
Beneficiary:
Daniel Mercer.
Daniel stared.
“That isn’t my name.”
“No.”
“But the birth date is yours.”
Silence.
Lorenzo looked at him.
“You received it.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I never saw this money.”
Hale continued.
“The account was closed three weeks later.”
“Who withdrew it?”
Hale looked at Isabella.
Her face drained.
“No.”
Lorenzo turned.
“Who?”
Hale answered:
“Richard Crane.”
Silence.
Isabella covered her mouth.
Lorenzo stared at the paper.
“So your father framed my mother.”
“Yes.”
“Used my brother’s identity.”
“Yes.”
“And stole two million.”
“Yes.”
A voice came from behind us.
“Not for himself.”
Richard Crane stood in the doorway.
Isabella froze.
“Dad.”
May you like
Richard looked at Lorenzo.
“The money bought Sarah Vale’s life.”
