Chapter 8 - The Missing Page Named the Real Beneficiary

The Vale Family Trust controlled half the estate.
Lorenzo knew that.
He also believed he was the beneficiary.
Richard shook his head.
“You were the public beneficiary.”
Lorenzo stared.
“What does that mean?”
“There was a private amendment.”
“By my father?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three months before he died.”
Sarah frowned.
“I never knew.”
Richard continued.
“He changed the final beneficiary.”
“To whom?”
Richard looked at Daniel.
Silence.
Daniel stared.
“No.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“My brother.”
Richard nodded.
“Both sons.”
“Equal?”
“Yes.”
Daniel stepped back.
“I don’t want it.”
Lorenzo ignored that.
“Where is the amendment?”
Richard looked at the torn page.
“The ledger only referenced it.”
“Who has the actual document?”
Richard hesitated.
“Isabella.”
Silence.
She stared at her father.
“What?”
“No.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“When your mother died, her papers came to me.”
Isabella shook her head.
“You gave me boxes.”
“Yes.”
“One of them?”
“Yes.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“You have it.”
“I might.”
“Did you know?”
“No.”
Richard whispered:
“She didn’t.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
Again.
“I wasn’t asking you.”
We returned to the mansion before dawn.
Isabella went upstairs.
Came back with a leather document case.
Old.
Dusty.
She opened it.
Tax records.
Property deeds.
Then one sealed envelope.
VALE FAMILY TRUST — PRIVATE AMENDMENT.
Lorenzo opened it.
Two beneficiaries.
Lorenzo Vale.
Daniel Vale.
Daniel stared.
“My name is Vale?”
The amendment said:
DANIEL ANTHONY VALE, ALSO KNOWN AS DANIEL MERCER.
Daniel looked away.
Sarah whispered:
“Your father recognized you legally.”
“When?”
“The year before he died.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“He never told me.”
Richard answered:
“He planned to.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“You keep saying what dead people planned.”
Richard went quiet.
The amendment contained a letter.
To both sons.
Lorenzo read.
I HAVE GIVEN EACH OF YOU HALF BECAUSE I GAVE EACH OF YOU HALF A FATHER.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Lorenzo continued.
THAT IS NOT GENEROSITY.
IT IS AN ADMISSION.
Silence.
Then:
IF MY BROTHER LEARNS OF THIS BEFORE MY DEATH, HE WILL TRY TO DESTROY IT.
Lorenzo looked at the torn ledger page.
“He did.”
Hale shook his head.
“No.”
“What?”
“If your uncle wanted this destroyed, why leave enough clues for us to find it?”
Lorenzo frowned.
Sarah whispered:
“He wanted Daniel recognized.”
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
“Your uncle is dying.”
Lorenzo stared.
“What?”
Richard nodded slowly.
“Cancer.”
Daniel looked toward the windows.
“So he arranged his own arrest?”
Hale said:
“He may have known the investigation was closing in.”
Peter whispered:
“And he wanted the family secrets exposed first.”
Lorenzo looked at the trust document.
“He murdered my father.”
“Yes.”
“He killed Daniel’s mother.”
“Yes.”
“Threatened my mother.”
“Yes.”
“And now he wants credit for revealing Daniel?”
Sarah shook her head.
“No credit.”
She looked at the ledger.
“Control.”
Lorenzo understood.
“He wanted to choose how the truth came out.”
“Yes.”
“Even now.”
“Yes.”
Lorenzo almost laughed.
“Not anymore.”
Daniel looked at the amendment.
“I still don’t want the money.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“Good.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“I don’t know if I want it either.”
They stared at each other.
Lorenzo continued.
“But our father made you his son on paper.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“That matters?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he denied you in life.”
Silence.
Lorenzo pushed the document toward him.
“You decide what the money means.”
Daniel looked at him.
“And you?”
“I decide what half a brother means.”
For the first time, Daniel smiled.
Small.
Then Isabella found another envelope beneath the trust papers.
Her name.
She opened it.
Her mother’s handwriting.
Isabella,
IF YOU EVER MARRY INTO THE VALE FAMILY, TELL THE TRUTH BEFORE YOU MAKE PROMISES.
She started crying.
Richard looked away.
The letter continued.
YOUR FATHER THINKS SILENCE PROTECTS PEOPLE.
IT PROTECTS CONSEQUENCES.
Lorenzo looked at Richard.
He did not defend himself.
Isabella folded the letter.
Then removed her engagement ring.
Lorenzo stared.
“We’re not engaged.”
She looked at him.
“You never formally proposed.”
“That is not the point.”
“I know.”
She placed the ring on the table.
“I was wearing a future I had not earned.”
Lorenzo’s expression changed.
“What are you saying?”
“That I love you.”
Silence.
“And I hid your mother’s letters because I was afraid you would leave.”
“Yes.”
“I don’t want you to stay because I’m afraid.”
He said nothing.
She stepped back.
“So I’m leaving first.”
Lorenzo stared.
“For how long?”
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then she looked at Sarah.
“I’m sorry.”
Sarah nodded.
“I believe you.”
Isabella’s eyes filled.
Lorenzo looked at his mother.
The same words he had used.
Sarah understood.
Isabella left the room.
Lorenzo did not stop her.
May you like
Not because he did not care.
Because for the first time, nobody was deciding for someone else.
