Chapter 6 - The Missing Witness

Mercer’s confession named two hired intruders.
“Chain of custody matters,” Rebecca warned.
“So does patience,” Nora added.
Dante looked toward Sophia. “Then we use both.”
One was dead; the other, Owen Pike, had vanished.
For a moment the room stayed quiet. Nobody rushed to fill the silence,
because they were learning that silence could hold attention without
becoming a weapon.
Rebecca’s investigator found Pike at a marina under another name.
“We verify it,” Dante said. “We do not guess.”
“And we do not make Sophia prove our theory,” Clara replied.
“Agreed,” Rebecca said. “Evidence first.”
Clara watched Sophia before watching the adults. The child’s breathing,
posture, and willingness to remain in the room mattered more than
anyone’s impatience.
Pike said Julian entered the house after Elena fell and refused to call
an ambulance while she was still conscious.
Pike had stolen a small recorder from Julian’s car as insurance.
“Chain of custody matters,” Rebecca warned.

For a moment the room stayed quiet. Nobody rushed to fill the silence,

It captured Julian saying, “She can still talk.
Fix the timeline.” Before agents could collect him, Pike disappeared.
“We verify it,” Dante said. “We do not guess.”

Clara recognized signs of abduction rather than flight.
For a moment the room stayed quiet. Nobody rushed to fill the silence,
because they were learning that silence could hold attention without
becoming a weapon.
A vehicle near the marina traced back to Victor Saye, one of Dante’s own
captains, proving Julian’s influence had survived inside Dante’s
organization.
“Chain of custody matters,” Rebecca warned.
“So does patience,” Nora added.
Dante looked toward Sophia. “Then we use both.”
Sophia eventually pushed a drawing across the table. Clara did not
interpret it for her.
“Do you want to tell me about it?” she asked.
Sophia considered the question, then shook her head.
“Okay.”
Dante started to speak, but Clara raised one finger and he stopped.
A few minutes later Sophia added another line to the picture.
“Now?” Clara asked.
Sophia nodded.
That tiny permission changed the atmosphere. The adults leaned back
instead of forward. Sophia pointed only to what she wanted them to
notice. When she finished, Clara thanked her and changed the subject.
For once, memory was allowed to belong to the person who had lived it.
Later, Dante found Clara near the window.
“I keep thinking there should have been something I saw,” he said.
“Maybe there was.”
“That is not comforting.”
“It isn’t supposed to be.” Clara faced him. “Guilt can make you stare
backward until you miss what is happening now.”
He looked toward Sophia.
“What is happening now?”
“She is deciding whether this house can become safe.”
Dante absorbed that quietly.
“And can it?”
“That depends on what you do when the truth costs you something.”
He gave a short nod. “Then let it cost me.”
