Chapter 9 - The Testimony

Months later, Sophia worked with an independent child specialist under
strict safeguards.
“Tell me what you know, not what you fear,” Clara said.
“Those used to be the same thing in this house,” Dante answered.
“Then change the house,” she said.
Prosecutors built the case from recordings, records, Pike, Mercer,
Renner, and physical evidence rather than forcing a child to carry the
burden.
For a moment the room stayed quiet. Nobody rushed to fill the silence,
because they were learning that silence could hold attention without
becoming a weapon.
Clara testified only to what she personally observed: Sophia saying
Julian’s name, recoiling, drawing the symbol, reacting to the ring, and
producing the key.
“I want to choose,” Sophia said softly.
Clara squeezed her hand. “You can.”
Dante nodded. “No one takes that from you.”
Clara watched Sophia before watching the adults. The child’s breathing,
posture, and willingness to remain in the room mattered more than
anyone’s impatience.
Dante testified too, admitting his own unrelated crimes under his
cooperation agreement.
Renner pleaded guilty and confirmed Julian’s payment.
“Tell me what you know, not what you fear,” Clara said.
“Those used to be the same thing in this house,” Dante answered.

Mercer admitted Julian delayed medical help after Elena fell.
Pike authenticated the recorder.

Julian’s defense weakened until a negotiated guilty plea became
unavoidable.

Later, Dante found Clara near the window.
“I keep thinking there should have been something I saw,” he said.
“Maybe there was.”
“That is not comforting.”
“It isn’t supposed to be.” Clara faced him. “Guilt can make you stare
backward until you miss what is happening now.”
He looked toward Sophia.
“What is happening now?”
“She is deciding whether this house can become safe.”
Dante absorbed that quietly.
“And can it?”
“That depends on what you do when the truth costs you something.”
He gave a short nod. “Then let it cost me.”
Sophia eventually pushed a drawing across the table. Clara did not
interpret it for her.
“Do you want to tell me about it?” she asked.
Sophia considered the question, then shook her head.
“Okay.”
Dante started to speak, but Clara raised one finger and he stopped.
A few minutes later Sophia added another line to the picture.
“Now?” Clara asked.
Sophia nodded.
That tiny permission changed the atmosphere. The adults leaned back
instead of forward. Sophia pointed only to what she wanted them to
notice. When she finished, Clara thanked her and changed the subject.
For once, memory was allowed to belong to the person who had lived it.
