Chapter 6 - Dr. Lang Finally Told the Whole Truth

Nobody let Dr. Lang go alone.

He argued.

Damian ignored him.

Marco drove.

Damian sat in front.

Claire and Dr. Lang sat behind them.

Bianca followed with security.

Charles remained at the estate with police.

The old Morel clinic stood outside the city.

Three floors.

Dark windows.

Snow gathering on the roof.

Dr. Lang stared at it.

“I delivered you here.”

Damian turned.

“What?”

The doctor swallowed.

“The hospital wing you were told about was only where your mother recovered.”

Claire frowned.

“Where were we born?”

“Here.”

Damian looked at the building.

“Why?”

Dr. Lang’s hands shook.

“Because Elena’s pregnancy was hidden.”

Marco stared through the windshield.

“Hidden from who?”

Dr. Lang looked at him.

“Your father.”

Marco turned sharply.

“What?”

Damian looked between them.

The old doctor closed his eyes.

“This is the part I never told you.”

Marco’s voice hardened.

“Tell me now.”

Dr. Lang breathed slowly.

“Elena’s father hated you.”

Marco said nothing.

“He knew about the Romano organization.”

“Yes.”

“He moved Elena here in her final month because he wanted the children born outside your family’s reach.”

Damian frowned.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

Claire whispered:

“So Mr. Morel didn’t begin this alone.”

“No.”

Dr. Lang looked at her.

“Your grandfather arranged a private adoption for one child.”

Silence.

Claire stared.

“My mother’s father gave me away?”

Dr. Lang nodded.

“He believed one child should be raised outside the Romano family.”

Damian’s voice dropped.

“Which child?”

“The girl.”

Claire looked away.

Marco gripped the steering wheel.

“He never told Elena.”

“No.”

“And Charles?”

“He was supposed to receive a child through a legal adoption after Elena consented.”

“But she never consented.”

“No.”

Damian understood.

“Elena hemorrhaged.”

Dr. Lang nodded.

“Charles arrived while she was unconscious.”

Marco whispered:

“And her father told everyone the consent would come later.”

“Yes.”

Claire wiped her eyes.

“But it never did.”

“No.”

Dr. Lang continued.

“By the time Elena woke, the baby was gone.”

Damian stared ahead.

“So Charles began with an illegal adoption arranged by my grandfather.”

“Yes.”

“And then chose to keep lying for thirty-four years.”

“Yes.”

Marco’s voice was cold.

“And you signed it.”

“Yes.”

Dr. Lang looked at the twins.

“I have spent thirty-four years trying to find a version of that night where I was less guilty.”

He shook his head.

“There isn’t one.”

Nobody answered.

They entered through the old emergency doors.

The building smelled like dust and antiseptic.

One hallway light was on.

At the far end sat a wheelchair.

Empty.

On it was Vincent’s scarf.

Claire whispered:

“He’s here.”

Dr. Lang stopped near an old delivery room.

His face changed.

“This room.”

Damian looked through the glass.

Two bassinets remained inside.

Rusting.

Empty.

Dr. Lang pointed to one.

“You were there.”

Then the other.

“And you.”

Claire stared at it.

Thirty-four years.

Reduced to two pieces of metal.

A speaker crackled above them.

Julian’s voice.

“Peter.”

Dr. Lang looked up.

“You should have burned the ledger.”

Damian called out:

“Where is Vincent?”

Julian laughed softly.

“Always the wrong question.”

Claire stepped forward.

“What is the right one?”

The speaker went silent.

Then:

“Where is the money?”

Damian frowned.

Marco looked at him.

Julian continued.

“Charles thinks I stole Claire’s trust.”

Bianca entered behind us.

“You did.”

Julian laughed again.

“No.”

Damian looked at Dr. Lang.

The old doctor seemed confused.

Julian said:

“I moved it.”

Claire asked:

“Where?”

“To keep Charles from taking it.”

Bianca shook her head.

“That makes no sense.”

“Oh, Bianca.”

Julian’s voice softened.

“Your father has lied to you longer than he lied to Claire.”

The lights turned on.

At the end of the hallway, a steel door opened.

Vincent sat inside.

Untied.

Drinking coffee.

Claire stared.

“You weren’t kidnapped.”

Vincent looked at Julian beside him.

“No.”

Damian’s face hardened.

“Then what is this?”

Vincent stood.

“A trap.”

Marco stepped forward.

“For who?”

Vincent looked past Damian.

May you like

At Bianca.

“For Charles Morel.”
