Chapter 8 - The Woman Everyone Thought Knew Nothing

Evelyn Morel had left the gala early.

At least that was what Charles told everyone.

She had not.

She had been upstairs.

Listening.

Waiting.

When Damian returned to the Morel estate, Evelyn stood in Charles’s study.

Sixty.

Elegant.

Gray-blonde hair.

No dark red gown.

No tears.

Charles sat behind his desk.

Police stood near the door.

Bianca rushed to her.

“Mom.”

Evelyn hugged her.

Then Claire entered.

Evelyn looked at her.

Everything changed.

Claire stopped.

“Did you know?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“Not when they brought you home.”

Claire waited.

“When did you know?”

Evelyn looked at Charles.

“On your seventh birthday.”

Charles closed his eyes.

Claire stared.

“Twenty-seven years ago?”

“Yes.”

Bianca stepped back.

“Mom.”

Evelyn continued.

“I found a hospital bracelet in Charles’s safe.”

She opened her purse.

A tiny plastic band.

BABY GIRL ROMANO.

Claire stared at it.

“I confronted him.”

Damian looked at Charles.

“And he told you?”

“Part of it.”

Evelyn nodded.

“He said Elena had agreed to a private adoption and regretted it later.”

Dr. Lang whispered:

“She never agreed.”

“I know that now.”

Claire’s voice shook.

“But you kept the bracelet.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I stopped believing him.”

Charles slammed one hand on the desk.

“You believed enough to stay.”

Evelyn turned toward him.

“I stayed because I thought taking Claire away from the only home she knew would hurt her.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“I told myself that every year.”

She looked ashamed.

“Eventually it became an excuse.”

Claire said nothing.

Evelyn continued.

“I hired a private investigator when you were sixteen.”

Charles stared at her.

“You what?”

“He found Marco in Italy.”

Marco looked surprised.

Evelyn looked at him.

“I sent you a letter.”

Marco stared.

“I never received one.”

Charles said nothing.

Evelyn turned slowly.

“You intercepted it.”

Charles looked away.

Bianca whispered:

“Dad.”

Evelyn opened another file.

“I found this tonight.”

A stack of unopened letters.

All addressed to Claire.

From Marco.

From Elena.

From Dr. Lang.

From Vincent.

Years of them.

Claire touched the top envelope.

Her hands trembled.

“My mother wrote to me?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Eleven letters.”

Claire began crying.

Damian looked at Charles.

There was no anger in his face now.

Only disbelief.

“You kept her mother’s letters.”

Charles said:

“She was a child.”

“The last one is dated eight years ago.”

Claire looked at the envelope.

She had been twenty-six.

Evelyn said:

“Charles kept everything in a private safe.”

Bianca wiped her eyes.

“Why did you open it tonight?”

Evelyn looked at her daughters.

Because despite everything, she still thought of both as daughters.

“Dr. Lang walked into the ballroom.”

She looked at Charles.

“And your father looked afraid.”

Charles whispered:

“I was trying to protect this family.”

Damian shook his head.

“No.”

He picked up one of Elena’s letters.

“You were protecting your ownership of it.”

Claire sat beside Evelyn.

“Did you ever want to tell me?”

“Every day.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Evelyn cried.

“Because I was afraid you would stop calling me Mom.”

Claire looked at her for a long time.

Then:

“I might.”

Evelyn nodded through tears.

“You have that right.”

Claire held the hospital bracelet.

“But lying guaranteed I would question every time I did.”

Evelyn broke.

Claire did not comfort her.

Not yet.

Damian opened one of Elena’s letters.

He did not read it.

It was Claire’s.

He placed it in front of her.

“All of these are yours.”

Claire nodded.

Then Marco entered with Vincent.

Charles looked at his brother.

“You came back.”

Vincent answered:

“I should have come back thirty-three years ago.”

“You took my money.”

“You paid me to disappear.”

“And you accepted.”

Vincent nodded.

“Yes.”

He looked at Claire.

“I was a coward.”

No excuses.

Claire seemed almost surprised.

Vincent continued.

“I told myself I could expose Charles later.”

“And?”

“I liked the money.”

Silence.

“I am sorry.”

Claire looked exhausted.

“Everyone is sorry.”

Nobody answered.

Police collected the ledger.

The trust documents.

The transfer records.

Elena’s letters.

Charles’s forged instructions.

Then a detective approached Claire.

“We will need a statement.”

She nodded.

Charles stood.

“Claire.”

She looked at him.

He whispered:

“I am still your father.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“No.”

Charles flinched.

She continued.

“You are the man who raised me.”

He stared.

“And I don’t know yet whether that will become the same thing again.”

Police led him away.

Bianca watched from the hallway.

Damian stood beside her.

She whispered:

“I knew for six months.”

“Yes.”

“I thought if my father fixed the money and told Claire himself, the damage would be smaller.”

Damian looked at her.

“Secrets do not become kinder because you schedule them.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

He looked at Claire opening the first letter from Elena.

Then at Bianca.

“I need time.”

May you like

Bianca cried quietly.

“I know that too.”
