Chapter 15 - The Spray of Bullets

Emergency lights turned the warehouse red.

Shouts exploded from every direction.

Marcus grabbed Ivy's arm.

“Stay with me.”

She twisted free and drove her heel into his injured leg.

He fell against the terminal with a curse.

The glass booth door burst open.

Rocco entered first, weapon raised.

“Where is she?”

Ivy pointed across the warehouse. “North table!”

Rocco ran toward his sister and Leo.

Damon appeared through smoke near the loading entrance, flanked by two guards.

Marcus saw him and smiled with sudden satisfaction.

“You came.”

Damon aimed at him. “Step away from Ivy.”

Marcus laughed. “There it is. Thomas's weakness with better tailoring.”

Ivy moved toward Damon.

A burst of gunfire erupted from the catwalk.

Everything happened at once.

Damon saw the muzzle flash before Ivy did.

He crossed the distance in two steps and threw his body into hers.

Bullets shattered the glass behind them.

They hit the floor.

Damon grunted.

Ivy felt warm blood against her hand.

“No.”

“Stay down.”

“You're hit.”

“Shoulder.”

Another burst ripped through the booth.

Damon rolled over her, shielding her with his back.

The promise buried in the moment of their first meeting became terrifyingly real: he did not hesitate. He did not calculate. He simply put himself between her and the bullets.

Ivy pressed her palm against the wound near his shoulder blade.

“Damon, look at me.”

“I am looking.”

“You are bleeding too much.”

“Not enough to argue.”

Rocco's men returned fire. The catwalk shooter fell behind a rail.

Across the warehouse, Rocco cut Leo's restraints while his sister clung to him.

Marcus crawled toward a side exit.

Ivy saw him.

“He's leaving.”

Damon tried to rise.

She pushed him down.

“No.”

“You wanted me to stop answering plans with that word.”

“This is different.”

“How?”

“Because you have a bullet in you.”

A figure emerged from the shadows near Marcus.

Adrian.

He blocked the exit.

Marcus stopped.

For a second, uncle and nephew stared at each other.

Then Marcus lifted a pistol.

Adrian fired first, striking the weapon from his hand.

“Enough,” Adrian said.

Damon froze at the sound of his brother's voice.

Adrian crossed the warehouse slowly, keeping his gun trained on Marcus.

“You should have stayed dead,” Marcus said.

“I tried.”

“You stole my account.”

“It was never yours.”

“Thomas stole it from me first.”

Adrian's face hardened. “Thomas helped build something monstrous. That does not make you righteous for wanting the keys.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Still preaching.”

Ivy helped Damon sit against the console.

He stared at Adrian as if the entire room had disappeared.

“You're alive.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Yes.”

Damon's voice cracked with anger. “You son of a bitch.”

Adrian almost smiled. “Good to see you too.”

Then alarms sounded.

Celia's voice came through the warehouse speakers.

“Police response is seven minutes out. Federal team is with them. The files are uploading now.”

Marcus's expression changed.

“What files?”

Ivy understood.

Celia had never intended merely to expose Marcus to the council. She had copied the Widow network evidence to law enforcement and regulators.

Marcus lunged for the terminal.

Ivy stepped in front of it.

“You need my consent,” she said.

He grabbed her by the throat.

Damon rose despite the wound.

Adrian aimed.

Rocco shouted from across the room, “Marcus!”

For one suspended second, everyone had a shot and nobody could take it safely.

Ivy looked into Marcus's eyes.

Then she whispered in French, “Two bells means the debt is transferred.”

Marcus frowned.

“To whom?”

Ivy smiled through the pressure on her throat.

“To you.”

She drove the brass bell into his injured knee.

He collapsed.

Damon caught Ivy as she stumbled free.

Rocco reached Marcus and kicked the pistol away.

Sirens grew louder outside.

Marcus looked around the warehouse at allies who were now backing away from him.

For the first time, he seemed old.

And afraid.

Paramedics reached Damon while federal agents secured the warehouse perimeter. He resisted the stretcher until Ivy physically blocked the exit.

“You cannot intimidate blood loss,” she told him.

“Watch me.”

“No.”

Rocco arrived with Elena beside him and Leo limping behind. Elena looked at Damon, then at Ivy, and understood enough from the blood on both of them.

“My brother says you came for us,” she said.

Ivy shook her head. “We all did.”

Elena hugged Rocco so fiercely he winced.

Adrian stood a few feet away, suddenly uncertain. The danger had made reunion simple. Survival made it complicated again.

Damon looked at him from the stretcher.

“You disappear again,” he said, voice thin with pain, “I will personally dig up every grave in New England until I find you.”

Adrian laughed once, tears in his eyes. “Fair.”

Ivy climbed into the ambulance beside Damon.

“You don't have to come,” he said.

“I know.”

The answer seemed to calm him more than reassurance would have.

As the doors closed, Ivy looked back at Pier Nineteen. Marcus sat handcuffed under harsh white lights while men who had once risen when he entered now avoided his eyes.

The first part of his power had not been money.

May you like

It had been belief.

And belief, Ivy realized, could collapse faster than an empire.
