Chapter 16 - The Names on the Drive

Damon spent the next six hours in surgery.

The bullet had missed his spine by less than an inch.

Ivy sat in the private hospital corridor with his blood dried beneath her fingernails.

Adrian sat twelve feet away.

Neither spoke.

Rocco's sister, Elena, was safe. Leo had a fractured wrist and a future full of difficult explanations. Marcus was under federal guard after attempting to flee the pier in an ambulance that did not belong to him.

Celia arrived carrying a laptop.

“He's stable,” she told Ivy.

“I know.”

“The surgeon said—”

“I heard him.”

Celia sat beside her.

“The upload from Pier Nineteen completed.”

Adrian looked over.

“How much?”

“Enough to destroy half the mythology around the Widow Account.”

She opened the laptop.

Thousands of files filled the screen: transfers, recordings, contingency agreements, blackmail dossiers, payoff schedules, emergency escape routes.

Ivy felt sick.

“My father built this?”

“He built the authentication architecture,” Adrian said. “Thomas and Marcus filled it with poison.”

Ivy looked at him.

“You knew Elias.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me how he died.”

Adrian's expression tightened.

“Marcus found the Marseille bar after intercepting one of my calls. Elias refused to tell him where I was. Marcus ordered a local crew to stage a robbery.”

Ivy stared.

“My father was shot because of you.”

Adrian took the words without defense.

“Yes.”

“And you stayed hidden.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Elias made me promise.”

She stood abruptly.

“Do not use my father as a shield.”

“I am not.”

“You let me believe he died in a random robbery for twelve years.”

“I didn't know where you were. Elias moved your records before he died. Thomas helped.”

That stopped her.

“Thomas?”

Adrian nodded.

“After Elias was killed, my father realized Marcus had crossed a line he could no longer excuse. He moved you and your mother through shell identities. It was the one decent thing he did in that whole mess.”

Ivy looked at Celia.

“Can you prove that?”

Celia opened another file.

A scanned instruction carried Thomas Cole's real seal.

PROTECT E. MARLOWE DEPENDENTS. NO CONTACT. NO LEVERAGE. PERMANENT.

Ivy read it twice.

The world became less simple and more painful.

Thomas Cole had built a criminal empire, hidden billions, lied to his sons, and still protected the daughter of a man his brother murdered.

Adrian said, “People are rarely one thing.”

Ivy turned on him. “Do not ask me to forgive anyone.”

“I won't.”

Celia clicked another folder.

“One more thing.”

A list of current Widow beneficiaries appeared.

Judges, politicians, unions, security firms, shell companies.

Near the bottom was a name Ivy recognized.

Preston Wade.

She frowned. “Why is he listed?”

“Not as a beneficiary,” Celia said. “As an asset scheduled for termination.”

The date was tomorrow.

Rocco stood from the far wall. “He's under guard.”

Celia shook her head.

“Marcus's network is not gone because Marcus is in custody. Some people on this list will kill to keep their names buried.”

Adrian pointed to another entry.

“Victor Hale. Same status.”

Damon's eyes opened later that afternoon.

Ivy was the first person he saw.

“You stayed,” he murmured.

She laughed shakily. “You got shot. It seemed rude to leave.”

His gaze moved to Adrian standing at the doorway.

Damon's face changed.

“Still alive?”

Adrian nodded. “Unfortunately for your blood pressure.”

Damon looked back at Ivy.

“What did we lose?”

“Money? A lot. Secrets? More.”

“People?”

“No one at the pier.”

His shoulders loosened.

Ivy hesitated.

“But the account has kill orders scheduled. Preston and Victor are first.”

Damon closed his eyes briefly.

“Then this isn't over.”

“No.”

He opened them again.

“Good.”

Ivy stared at him.

“That is an insane response.”

A weak smile touched his mouth.

“You keep saying that.”

Later that night, Mara's initials on the brass bell returned to Ivy's mind.

She took it from her bag and showed Adrian.

His face changed immediately.

“Where did you get this?”

“Marcus sent it at the Glass Room.”

Adrian turned the bell over and touched the initials.

“This was your mother's.”

Ivy felt the floor tilt beneath her.

“You are sure?”

“I saw it in Marseille. Mara used it during early Widow tests. Elias joked that no banker listened as quickly as a bartender hearing last call.”

Ivy sat down.

“My mother died in Lisbon.”

Adrian hesitated too long.

“What?”

“I was told she was moved after Elias died. Thomas handled it. Later he told me she was gone.”

“Gone meaning dead?”

“He did not use that word.”

Anger rose inside her, hot and exhausted.

“Why does everyone in your family communicate like a legal trap?”

Adrian had no defense.

Celia searched archived relocation records and found a sealed identity transfer nine years earlier, dated two days before Mara's reported death.

The destination field had been erased.

Ivy stared at the blank line.

For years she had mourned both parents as certainties. Now even grief had become conditional.

Damon, half-awake from medication, reached for her hand.

This time Ivy let him hold it.
