Chapter 4 - Locker 314

The old Bellini terminal had been closed since Luca was fifteen.
Broken windows.
Rusting rails.
Dust thick enough to remember footsteps.
Marcus entered first with two security men.
Luca followed.
Then Gregory.
Isabella.
And me.
Luca had again told me to stay behind.
Again, I didn’t.
This time he didn’t argue.
Locker 314 stood in a corridor beneath the old ticket office.
The brass key turned slowly.
Luca opened the door.
Inside was a black case.
No money.
No weapon.
Documents.
Photographs.
A voice recorder.
And a sealed envelope addressed to:
ISABELLA ROMANO.
Her hands shook when she opened it.
The first line was written in her father’s handwriting.
Bella,
If you are reading this, I either failed to reach you or I decided that seeing you would put you in danger.
She stopped.
Luca took one step closer but did not touch her.
Isabella kept reading silently.
Then she looked at Gregory.
“He says you can be trusted.”
Gregory looked away.
“What else?”
“He says Vittorio rebuilt the Crown.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
Isabella continued.
“He says the ledger is not the real danger.”
Matteo had spent twenty years protecting the ledger.
Sofia had nearly died because someone wanted it.
Yet Isabella’s father called it secondary.
Luca asked:
“What is the real danger?”
She turned the page.
“A list called the Succession File.”
Gregory went still.
Luca noticed.
“You know that name.”
Gregory nodded slowly.
“I heard it once.”
“From who?”
“Your father.”
Luca stared.
“When?”
“The night he disappeared.”
Silence.
Gregory looked at the abandoned platform.
“Your father said Vittorio wasn’t stealing money.”
“He was building ownership.”
“Of what?”
“Of people.”
Gregory looked at Luca.
“Judges.”
“Police commanders.”
“Union leaders.”
“Business owners.”
“Political staff.”
“Anyone who could be compromised.”
Isabella held up the letter.
“My father says the Succession File contains leverage.”
“Photographs.”
“Accounts.”
“Affairs.”
“Crimes.”
“Secret children.”
“Everything.”
Luca’s expression hardened.
“And Vittorio has it?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“My father says Sofia had it.”
Everyone stopped.
Luca looked toward Gregory.
“My mother?”
Gregory whispered:
“That was why she was supposed to testify.”
Not the ledger.
The file.
Luca’s father had staged Sofia’s death not only to save her life.
He had hidden the one person who knew where Vittorio’s empire could be destroyed.
Marcus opened the black case fully.
Under the documents was a cassette recorder.
Old.
Labeled:
IF LUCA OPENS THIS.
Luca stared.
He pressed play.
Static.
Then a man’s voice.
Isabella inhaled sharply.
Her father.
“Luca Bellini.”
“If you hear this, you probably hate my daughter.”
Isabella closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
“You have the right.”
“She hid things.”
“But some of them were because I asked her to.”
Luca’s face changed.
Isabella looked stunned.
“I told her not to tell you I was alive.”
The room became still.
“I told her the Crown was watching everyone close to you.”
“I told her that if she brought you to Vermont too soon, Sofia would die.”
Isabella whispered:
“He never told me that.”
Gregory frowned.
The voice continued.
“I was wrong about one thing.”
“Vittorio did not rebuild the Crown alone.”
Luca leaned closer.
“There is someone younger.”
“Someone who will inherit it.”
“Someone already inside your house.”
Marcus looked at the security men.
Luca didn’t move.
The recorder clicked.
Then:
“I do not know the name.”
“But I know the person has access to your schedules.”
“Your security changes.”
“Your staff rosters.”
“And your private rooms.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
Inside the house.
The person who stole the tape.
The person connected to the poison.
The person protecting Vittorio.
Luca stopped the recording.
Marcus said:
“We need to clear the estate.”
Gregory nodded.
“No one goes in without being checked.”
Isabella looked at Luca.
“He said someone in your house.”
Luca looked toward me.
I knew why.
Staff.
Security.
Management.
Anyone.
Marcus began calling teams.
Gregory searched the documents.
Then he stopped.
“What?”
He pulled out a photograph.
It showed the Bellini estate twenty years earlier.
A group of security officers.
Gregory.
Younger.
Vittorio.
Two detectives.
One was Isabella’s father.
The other man had been cut from the photograph.
Not torn.
Cut carefully around the body.
Luca frowned.
“Who was there?”
Gregory stared at the empty outline.
“I don’t remember.”
“That’s impossible.”
“There were dozens of temporary contractors.”
Luca took the photo.
On the back was handwriting.
NOT HIM.
THE SON.
Luca stared.
“What son?”
Gregory looked confused.
Isabella reread her father’s letter.
Then stopped.
“There’s another page.”
She unfolded a smaller piece.
One sentence.
The Crown survives through blood, but not Bellini blood.
Luca frowned.
“Not Bellini.”
Gregory whispered:
“Romano?”
Isabella looked horrified.
“My father had no son.”
Marcus spoke from behind us.
“Maybe he did.”
Everyone turned.
He held a folder from the case.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Male child.
Born thirty-eight years earlier.
Father’s name:
Detective Anthony Romano.
Mother:
Claire Hale.
Marcus Hale stopped moving.
The room changed.
Luca looked at him.
Marcus looked at the birth certificate.
Then at the mother’s name.
Claire Hale.
His mother.
Isabella stared.
“No.”
Marcus stepped backward.
“My father died before I was born.”
Isabella’s face went white.
Gregory whispered:
“Your mother lied.”
Marcus looked at Luca.
“Sir, I didn’t know.”
Luca didn’t reach for a weapon.
Neither did Gregory.
But one of Marcus’s own security men did.
Not at Marcus.
At Luca.
The guard raised a pistol.
“Don’t move.”
Marcus turned.
“Evan?”
The guard fired.
The shot struck the wall beside Luca.
Marcus tackled him.
Gregory pulled Isabella down.
I dropped behind the lockers.
Two seconds later, Marcus had the man pinned.
Luca kicked the gun away.
The guard laughed through blood.
“You opened it too early.”
Luca stared down.
“Opened what?”
The guard smiled.
“Your father was supposed to be dead before you found the file.”
Then he bit down.
Marcus grabbed his jaw.
Too late.
The man began convulsing.
Poison capsule.
Within seconds, he stopped moving.
Isabella stared.
Gregory whispered:
“The Crown.”
Luca looked at Marcus.
Marcus was still holding the birth certificate.
His hands trembled.
“My whole life,” he said.
“My mother told me my father was a soldier.”
Luca looked at the dead guard.
Then at Marcus.
“You’re Isabella’s brother.”
Marcus looked at her.
Half brother.
Unknown to both.
May you like
Isabella whispered:
“And maybe the heir my father was warning us about.”
