THE WEST GATE NEVER CLOSED / Chapter 8 / 9

Chapter 9 - The Crown Removes Its King

Vittorio looked at the twelve people above us.

Then at Elena.

“You think this is a coup?”

“No.”

She replied calmly.

“It’s an exposure.”

Marcus checked the locked doors.

No exit.

Luca stood beneath the chandelier.

Unarmed.

Calm.

Too calm.

Vittorio looked at him.

“You finally came home to me.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“This was never home.”

“I raised you.”

“You kidnapped me.”

“I saved you from weak parents.”

“My parents came back for me.”

Vittorio smiled.

“They came back too late.”

Luca took one step.

Gregory touched his arm.

Not yet.

Elena spoke to the balcony.

“Each of you received a message saying the Succession File would be opened tonight.”

No one answered.

“You came because you were afraid.”

A judge shouted:

“This is ridiculous.”

Elena looked at him.

“Then leave.”

The doors remained locked.

No one moved.

She continued.

“Vittorio told each of you he still controlled the Bellini heir.”

Luca looked at his uncle.

Vittorio’s face remained calm.

“He told you Luca would sign what was needed.”

“Approve what was needed.”

“Protect what was needed.”

Elena smiled.

“But Luca never knew the Crown existed.”

Silence.

“That means Vittorio never controlled him.”

One of the executives cursed.

Vittorio’s expression finally changed.

Elena looked at Marcus.

“And Marcus was supposed to become the next public shield.”

Marcus stared.

“I never agreed.”

“No.”

“That is why Evan was placed under you.”

“The dead guard.”

“Yes.”

“If you refused, Evan would replace you.”

Marcus looked toward the balcony.

“Who ordered Evan to shoot Luca?”

A man above us moved.

Police Commander Ellis Crane.

Marcus saw him.

“So it was you.”

Crane said nothing.

Elena pointed to a camera above the chandelier.

Red light.

Recording.

Vittorio looked up.

“You’re recording us?”

“Yes.”

“For who?”

Elena smiled.

“Not police.”

She looked at Isabella.

“Her father.”

Isabella froze.

“My father is alive?”

A speaker turned on.

Anthony Romano’s voice filled the room.

“Yes, Bella.”

Isabella broke.

Not loudly.

One breath.

One step backward.

“Dad?”

A side screen activated.

Video call.

Anthony Romano.

Older.

Alive.

Isabella stared.

“You let me bury you.”

His face filled with pain.

“I know.”

“Five years.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“That’s what everyone says.”

Luca looked at her.

The same sentence could have belonged to him.

Anthony continued.

“Vittorio found my witness identity.”

“I disappeared again.”

“Gregory was supposed to meet me.”

Gregory stared at the screen.

“You were alive in Montreal.”

“Yes.”

“What happened in the hotel room?”

“Vittorio came.”

Everyone looked at Vittorio.

Anthony smiled faintly.

“He thought I was alone.”

“I wasn’t.”

“Who?”

“Elena.”

Vittorio turned slowly toward her.

Elena nodded.

“I was the person who removed Anthony before you entered.”

Isabella whispered:

“You saved him?”

“Yes.”

Anthony spoke.

“She saved more than me.”

“She spent six months identifying every remaining Crown member.”

The balcony erupted.

People arguing.

Demanding doors open.

Vittorio shouted:

“Enough.”

Everyone stopped.

Decades of obedience.

One word.

Still powerful.

He looked at Luca.

“You think they came because they love me?”

“No.”

“They came because they fear the file.”

Luca held up Amelia’s pendant.

“Then maybe we should open it.”

Vittorio’s eyes changed.

“No.”

The first honest reaction.

Fear.

Luca saw it.

So did everyone.

“Interesting.”

Vittorio stepped forward.

“That file destroys this family.”

“No.”

Luca looked around.

“It destroys yours.”

The graveyard was on Bellini property.

A private mausoleum.

Sofia Bellini’s name carved into marble.

A death date that was false.

Elena unlocked the ballroom.

No one was allowed to leave the grounds.

Marcus’s trusted outside team had already arrived.

Anthony had arranged federal observers who were not connected to the Crown.

At 1:12 a.m., we entered the mausoleum.

The pendant fit into a small recess beneath Sofia’s engraved name.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside:

Three drives.

Paper ledgers.

Photographs.

Recorded confessions.

And one sealed letter.

For Luca.

Vittorio stared at the documents.

Twenty-three years of leverage.

Destroyed by one hidden compartment.

Luca opened the letter.

His mother’s handwriting.

Luca,

If you are reading this, then the lie finally failed.

Do not inherit our fear.

Do not inherit Vittorio’s methods.

Do not confuse surviving a family with owing it loyalty.

Luca read the final line twice.

Then looked at Vittorio.

His uncle smiled.

“You think evidence changes blood?”

Luca folded the letter.

“No.”

“It changes control.”

Federal officers approached.

Vittorio did not resist.

But before they took him, he looked at me.

Amelia.

Then at Luca.

“You still don’t know the worst part.”

Luca stared.

“What?”

Vittorio smiled.

“Ask Matteo why he let me keep you.”

Luca’s face changed.

Vittorio was led away.

No one spoke.

Then Gregory looked at the mausoleum door.

Matteo was standing there.

He had arrived with Sofia.

Luca looked at his father.

“What did he mean?”

Matteo didn’t answer.

Sofia whispered:

“Matteo.”

He closed his eyes.

Luca stepped closer.

“Why did he say you let him keep me?”

Matteo looked at the son he had lost for twenty years.

Then at Amelia.

Then at Sofia.

“Because after Vittorio took you that night…”

He swallowed.

“I had one chance to come back.”

Luca waited.

“And?”

May you like

Matteo’s voice broke.

“I chose not to.”
